Posted: Published on July 6th, 2017

Acupuncture is found effective for the treatment of paralysis caused by a stroke. Researches tested the Shujintongluo acupuncture protocol for the treatment of hemiplegia, a type of stroke affecting one side of the body. The addition of acupuncture to standard drug therapy following an acute cerebral infarction increased the positive patient outcome rate by 11.77%. Upper limb acupoints A randomized clinical trial of 68 patients examined results in two groups. One group received standard drug therapy and the other group received standard drug therapy plus acupuncture. The drug therapy only group had a total effective rate of 70.59%. The group receiving drug therapy plus acupuncture had an 82.36% total effective rate. One of the more important results measured in the study was the recovery rate, defined as a disability rank of level 0 and the NHISS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale/Score) improvement rate of 91% 100%. The group receiving acupuncture plus drugs had a 29.41% recovery rate and the drugs only group had a 20.59% recovery rate. Another important result was the significantly effective rate, defined as a disability rank of level 1 3 and an NHISS improvement of 46% 90%. The acupuncture plus drugs group had a 38.24% … Continue reading

Hemorrhagic stroke treatment – UpToDate

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2015

STROKE OVERVIEW In the United States, approximately 750,000 strokes occur each year. During a stroke, one or more areas of the brain can be damaged. Depending upon the area affected, a person may lose the ability to move one side of the body, the ability to speak, or a number of other functions. The damage may be temporary or permanent, and the function may be partially or completely lost. A person's long term outcome depends upon how much brain is damaged, how quickly treatment begins, and a number of other factors. Strokes are a leading cause of long-lasting injury, disability, and death. Early treatment and preventive measures can reduce the brain damage that occurs as a result of a stroke. The treatment of a stroke depends upon the type of stroke (eg, ischemic or hemorrhagic), the time since the first stroke symptoms occurred, and the patient's underlying medical problems. General information about the treatment of hemorrhagic strokes is provided here. A separate topic review is available that discusses the signs, symptoms, and diagnosis of ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. (See "Patient information: Stroke symptoms and diagnosis (Beyond the Basics)".) A topic is also available that discusses the treatment of ischemic stroke. … Continue reading

Chinese stroke patients fare better when hospitals follow guidelines

Posted: Published on June 3rd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 3-Jun-2014 Contact: Michael Burton michael.burton@heart.org 214-706-1236 American Heart Association Chinese stroke patients were less likely to acquire pneumonia or die from the stroke when hospitals followed treatment guidelines, according to research presented at the American Heart Association's Quality of Care and Outcomes Research Scientific Sessions 2014. Closer adherence to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's Get With The Guidelines-Stroke led to a drop in pneumonia from 20 percent to almost 5 percent. However, only 55.5 percent of patients received all guideline-recommended treatments for which they were eligible. Developed with the goal to save lives and hasten recovery, Get With The Guidelines programs have touched the lives of nearly 5 million patients since 2001. Studies show that consistent application of these programs can lead to better recoveries and lower risks of ending up back in the hospital. "In China, stroke is the major cause of death and long-term disability and improving the quality of stroke care is a national priority," said Zixiao Li, M.D., the study's lead author and a neurologist at Capital Medical University's teaching hospital in Beijing, Beijing Tiantan Hospital. "Practitioners should make efforts to increase adherence to all stroke performance measures." Researchers looked at 24,597 … Continue reading

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 17, 2014 NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Named to National Institutes of Health Stroke Trials Network Clinical investigators will share research results with a national network of stroke centers In a novel approach to stroke research, investigators from NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center will collaborate to create the New York Stroke Trials Network of Columbia and Cornell. The network is one of 25 regional stroke centers across the country funded by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Trials Network (NIH StrokeNet), announced by the National Institutes of Health in December 2013. As a regional stroke center, the New York Stroke Trials Network of Columbia and Cornell will run NIH-sponsored clinical trials in stroke prevention, acute stroke treatment, and stroke recovery. The center received five-year funding, beginning with $250,000 per year over the first three years for research costs and the training of stroke clinical researchers. The NIH selected centers that had experience in stroke research, documented ability to recruit stroke patients into clinical trials, and access to all specialties involved in stroke care. "For the first time, the three main facets of comprehensive stroke care--stroke prevention, acute stroke treatment, and stroke recovery … Continue reading

New Stroke Treatment Enables People Who Have Been Confined to a Wheelchair to Walk Again Utilizing Stretching Therapy …

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2013

(PRWEB) October 23, 2013 Phillip Koss, owner of http://www.strechforlife.com/ is quick to point out that this process is no panacea. A severely disabled individual will need weeks of daily treatments, as much as two hours twice daily. Commitment and dedication is required of both the patient and practitioner. Each session is individually tailored to meet the specific needs of the person at each stage in the process. Since 2009, Stretch for Life has been enabling persons with stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) to regain feeling and function. The process involves full body stretching, massage, acupressure, strength training coupled with mental focus, breathing and visualization to eliminate spasticity and restore feeling and muscle function. Once the habitually tight muscles have been coaxed into relaxing, the relaxation is permanent. Persons who have been in chronic pain report the pain is alleviated. The process begins as a series of treatments to relax the tight muscles and continues as a relearning to use the atrophied muscles. Lastly, the procedure involves exercises to restore strength and coordination. "By pretreating a client with perispinally administered etanercept (Enbrel), we vastly speed up the entire process and obtain results that would not be possible without the Enbrel," stated … Continue reading

Martha Jefferson Healthwise: Stroke Awareness

Posted: Published on October 10th, 2013

Oct. 9, 2013 Healthcare providers are teaming up with the Fluvanna Rotary Club to raise stroke awareness. In this week's Martha Jefferson Healthwise report, CBS19's Stephanie Satchell is previewing an upcoming clinic that will teach people about prevention, treatment and common symptoms of stroke. The Rotary Club of Fluvanna County will be joining forces with Martha Jefferson Hospital. Charles Hoffman along with his fellow Rotary members will be putting on a stroke clinic in Fluvanna County. A stroke is simply a blockage in the blood vessel that reduces blood flow to the brain. "We're having it to service our citizens of Fluvanna County to provide them with an opportunity to learn about their health needs with regards to strokes and stroke prevention, treatments and stroke rehabilitation and recovery. Martha Jefferson's Neuro Services Program Coordinator Christi Hankle says a stroke comes on quickly and can happen at any age so it's important to know exactly what to do. "It's really important to get attention because a lot of people still don't recognize that strokes are treatable, but the only way that strokes can be treatable is if you come to the hospital fast by calling 911," said Christi Hankle, Neuro Services … Continue reading

(PRWEB) September 25, 2013 Since 2009, Stretch for Life has been enabling persons with stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI) to regain feeling and function. The process involves full body stretching, massage, acupressure, strength training coupled with mental focus, breathing and visualization to eliminate spasticity and restore feeling and muscle function. The procedure is effective even years after a stroke or TBI. Once the habitually tight muscles have been coaxed into relaxing, the relaxation is permanent. The process begins as a series of treatments to relax the tight muscles and continues as a relearning to use the atrophied muscles. Lastly, the procedure involves exercises to restore strength and coordination. "By pretreating a client with perispinally administered etanercept (Enbrel), we vastly speed up the entire process and obtain results that would not be possible without the Enbrel," stated Phillip Koss developer of http://www.strechforlife.com. For example, an individual with stroke who is completely unable to walk and confined to a wheelchair could, after a series of daily treatments over several months, walk with a walker or even crutches. When such an individual is pretreated with perispinally administered Enbrel, the treatment is shortened from several months to a few weeks and the individual … Continue reading

Stem Cell Therapy Shows Promise in Repairing Brain Damage Even Hours After Stroke Occurs

Posted: Published on August 10th, 2013

Durham, NC (PRWEB) August 09, 2013 Stroke is a major health concern and is a leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Center for Disease Control. Despite significant research efforts, developing treatments that ensure complete recovery for stroke patients poses an extreme challenge, especially when more than a few hours have passed between onset of the stroke and administration of treatment. However, a new study released today in STEM CELLS Translational Medicine indicates that endothelial precursor cells, which are found in the bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, and as very rare cells in peripheral blood, could make a significant difference for these patients recovery even in the later stages of stroke. In animal studies, the treatment minimized the initial brain injury and helped repair the stroke damage. Previous studies indicated that stem/progenitor cells derived from human umbilical cord blood (hUCB) improved functional recovery in stroke models, noted Branislava Janic, Ph.D., a member of Henry Ford Health Systems Cellular and Molecular Imaging Laboratory in Detroit and lead author of the study. We wanted to examine the effect of hUCB-derived AC133+ endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) on stroke development and resolution in rats. Dr. Janic and his team injected … Continue reading

Magnetic Brain Stimulation Shown To Increase Speech Skills Of Stroke Victims

Posted: Published on July 30th, 2013

July 29, 2013 redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports Your Universe Online Stroke patients who have parts of their brain stimulated with a magnetic coil prior to taking part in speech and language therapy made three times as much progress than those who did not undergo the procedure, according to research recently published in the journal Stroke. By using a non-invasive technique to temporarily shut down the parts of the brain that function properly, researchers from McGill University in Montreal discovered the side of the brain that had been damaged by the stroke could re-learn linguistic skills, Telegraph Science Correspondent Nick Collins explained on Saturday. According to Collins, the researchers said the stimulation should be offered within five weeks of a patient suffering a stroke because genes which allow the brain to recover are most active early on. He added the treatment is directed toward patients suffering from a condition known as aphasia a disorder characterized by a disturbance of the comprehension and formulation of language caused by dysfunction in specific brain regions. Twenty to 30 percent of all stroke victims experience aphasia, Collins noted. Lead author Alexander Thiel, an associate professor of neurology and neurosurgery at the university, and his … Continue reading

(PRWEB) July 17, 2013 Minutes after Dr. Tobinick administered a perispinal injection of Enbrel to Anna Alfaro, she began to recover according to her husband Dr. Rene Alfaro, an ophthalmologist from Mexico. "It's magic" he said of his wife's recovery after a single dose that almost instantly restored much of her movement and cognition more than a year after an aneurysm and subsequent stroke incapacitated her left side. Within minutes of receiving the injection on Monday, Anna Alfaro walked without a cane, got up from a chair more easily and regained sensation in her left arm. Hours later, with some of her left eye vision returned, she could see the phone clearly enough to dial a number for the first time since her illness. Another patient treated with perispinally injected Enbrel, a 59 year old Florida resident was described by his daughter Jennifer Cody as having "renewed independence" 18 years after his stroke. Within five minutes, he was saying how clear his head was, Cody said. It had always been so cloudy. Now her father talks without slowed speech, hes confident enough to drive on the highway, he can roll down the window in his car, and he no longer … Continue reading
