Cancer drugs affect mouse genomes for generations
Posted: Published on January 30th, 2012
Three common chemotherapy drugs cause DNA mutations not only in mice that receive treatment, but also in their offspring, according to a study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA1. The results suggest that the genome in treated mice became destabilized yielding new mutations long after exposure to the drugs has ceased. A similar phenomenon has been observed in mice exposed to radiation. Genomic damage can be seen in the offspring of mice who have received chemotherapy drugs. PAUL WOOTTON/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY The work emphasizes the importance of looking at the effects of chemotherapy not only on recipients, but also on their descendants, but Yuri Dubrova, a geneticist at the University of Leicester, UK, who led the study, cautions against extrapolating the results of this study to humans. Most adults treated for cancer are either too old to have children or become sterile from the treatment. “So we’re talking about one group only: childhood cancer survivors,” says Dubrova. One recent study found no significant impact of radiation or chemotherapy on the rate of birth defects in 4,699 children of childhood cancer survivors2. Furthermore, children who are treated for cancer will not have children of their own … Continue reading

Drugs may be factor in fatal crash, police say
Posted: Published on January 30th, 2012
Drugs may have played a critical role in a collision that killed one man Saturday night. RCMP say that a vehicle being driven by a 19-year-old male from Calgary allegedly crossed the centre line on the Sea to Sky Highway and crashed into an oncoming limousine. The impact caused an explosion and the limousine was engulfed in flames. Police say the 54-year-old limo driver, a Lower Mainland resident, died at the scene. The Calgary man was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police are investigating the incident and say that drugs appear to have been a factor. “This is a terrible tragedy that resulted in the death of an innocent driver,” said Sgt. Peter Thiessen in the statement to media. “The family of the deceased victim has been affected for a lifetime and will never be the same.” The highway at Function Junction was closed in both directions for eight hours after the collision and reopened Sunday morning. Native returns to Danville to start new pharmacy
Posted: Published on January 30th, 2012
Vance Kiser returned to Danville to pursue his dreams of opening a pharmacy and starting a family. Piedmont Pharmacy, owned by Kiser and Ashlyn Payne, opens Monday at 305 Mount Cross Road near Leggett Town & Country in Danville to offer residents a small, independent pharmacy option. “I really like the customer interaction and the health care field,” Kiser said. “I like being able to talk to people from all walks of life.” Piedmont Pharmacy plans to cater to customers’ needs, including ordering requested items for the store or matching competitors’ drug prices, he said. Kiser wants to connect with the community and offer more of a personal touch than big-box stores. Residents can call and ask questions about their medications, for instance, he said. The pharmacy will offer a list of $4 generics and plans to add other services like flu shots. Kiser, 30, spent summers working as a pharmacy technician at CVS and the hospital in Danville while attending college. He returned to Danville after finishing his doctorate in pharmacy from Shenandoah University in Winchester in 2008. He and his wife are both from Danville, where they want to raise their family. “It’s home,” he said. “No other … Continue reading
