Repairing Damaged Hearts with Stem Cells
Posted: Published on September 25th, 2011
Heart attacks cut off blood flow to heart muscle, leading to tissue death and scarring. In his laboratory, Glenn Gaudette, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), is exploring the use of mesenchymal stem cells, which are derived from bone marrow, to repair injured heart tissue and restore function to damaged hearts. Gaudette and his team are also studying a novel way to deliver the stem cells to the heart using tiny threads made of fibrin.
