Internet pharmacy pioneer Strempler going to prison

Posted: January 10, 2013 at 7:50 pm

Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION By: Bill Redekop Posted: 1:00 AM | Comments: Enlarge Image Andrew Strempler (WAYNE GLOWACKI / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS ARCHIVES) Andrew Strempler, who launched Canada's first large Internet pharmacy and helped Americans afford life-saving drugs, has been sentenced to 48 months in prison. Strempler originally faced three counts of mail fraud that carried a maximum sentence of 20 years each. He plea-bargained those charges down to the sentence handed down Wednesday in Miami, Fla. The government sought a 57-month sentence. Strempler's counsel, Susan Bozorgi, countered with 41 months. Strempler also forfeited $300,000. Bozorgi did not return phone or email messages. Strempler's former partner, Mark Rzepka, has also refused interview requests from the Free Press. Rzepka sold his interests in Strempler's company, Mediplan, also called RxNorth, in late 2004 or early 2005. "It's a sad story," said Daren Jorgenson, who exited the Internet pharmacy business about five years ago. Strempler's story is of "a Mennonite kid from Manitoba who made so much money but money corrupted him," he said. Deadly fake medicine trade needs global treaty

Posted: November 16, 2012 at 1:46 am

Fake and substandard medicines harm and kill patients in developed and developing countries, say Canadian and international researchers calling for an international treaty to tackle the problem. The deadly meningitis outbreak in the U.S. from contaminated steroid injections highlights the consequences of fake medicines that contain little or no active ingredients and substandard drugs that don't meet regulatory quality control standards, experts said in this week's issue of the British Medical Journal. U.S. authorities are investigating connections between the Canadian owner of an internet pharmacy firm and the sale of counterfeit versions of bevacizumab, an injectable cancer medication that goes by the brand names Avastin and Altuzan. "Why is it that global law on money counterfeiting a fake 10 dollar bill is tougher than global law on a fake cancer treatment that can kill you?" asked Amir Attaran, Canada Research Chair in law, population health, and global development policy at the University of Ottawa, an author of the report. In developing countries, a heart medicine containing a toxic overdose of a malaria drug led to 125 deaths in Pakistan, the researchers said. The World Health Organizations estimates more than one in every 10 drug products in poorer nations are fake … Continue reading

LegitScript to Release Monthly Data on Rogue Internet Pharmacy Registrar Clustering

Posted: at 11:48 am

One of the most important debates in the realm of Internet governance pertains to when, how and how much voluntary action registrars can and should take to prevent the use of their registration platforms in furtherance of criminal activity. In the Internet pharmacy world, the trend over the past four years has been unmistakable: A growing number of registrars worldwide, large and small, recognize the value of prohibiting the use of their registration services by websites selling unregulated or unapproved drugs, selling drugs without required pharmacy licenses or offering prescription drugs without a prescription. This activity is not merely illegal in virtually every jurisdiction globally, but can also result in serious health consequences. Among the many registrars who, to their credit, suspend and lock domain names shown to be engaged in such illegal activity are Name.com, eNom, GoDaddy, DomainContext, Directi (PDR), URL Solutions, Internet.bs, Center for Ukrainian Internet Names, GandiSAS and several others. The Importance of Voluntary Compliance By choosing responsible corporate governance, the registrars above set the industry standard for voluntary compliance. This is a credit to the registrar community as a whole. Of particular importance, the registrars above take the position that they do not require a court … Continue reading

Arrested businessman says he's 'radioactive' to Tory friends

Posted: November 3, 2012 at 12:52 pm

In an exclusive interview with CBC News Networks' Power & Politics, Nathan Jacobson, the Canadian businessman who pleaded guilty to money laundering in a U.S. court four years ago, says he is protecting friends in the Canadian government because he is "radioactive." When Jacobson failed to show up for a sentencing hearing in the U.S. this summer, U.S. justice authorities issued a warrant for his arrest on July 30. Almost three months later, Toronto police arrested him last week. Jacobson had set up an internet pharmacy called Affpower, based in Costa Rica, that sold controlled drugs online for customers without a prescription, and used his own credit-card payment company to receive the fees. His guilty plea was for laundering $46 million in payments. Jacobson was released on bail Wednesday from the Toronto Detention Centre, where he had been held since last Thursday. In question period Thursday, Liberal MP Judy Foote asked if the government had taken any action to find and apprehend Jacobson before his arrest. Parliamentary secretary for justice Robert Goguen replied, "This was a matter that was acted on immediately upon the request. The Americans requested that he be arrested on Oct. 24 and the very next day, … Continue reading
