FDA questions new use for Amgen drug
Posted: Published on February 7th, 2012
Associated Press February 6, 2012, 3:55 p.m. Washington— Scientists for the Food and Drug Administration say that an Amgen Inc. drug slowed the spread of cancer to the bone in men with hard-to-treat prostate cancer, though the drug did not extend life and carried significant side effects. The Food and Drug Administration will ask a panel of outside experts Wednesday whether the benefits of Amgen's Xgeva outweigh its risks, which included bone disease in about 5% of patients taking the drug. Xgeva is already approved for preventing fractures in cancerous bones, and for osteoporosis in a different formulation called Prolia. Now Amgen has asked the FDA to approve the injectable drug as a preventive measure for men with recurring prostate cancer that is at high risk of spreading to the bone. Men must have also attempted and failed treatment with hormone therapy. A 1,432-patient study conducted by the Thousand Oaks company showed that the drug slowed the spread of cancer to the bone by about 4.2 months compared with patients who received a placebo. Although that delay was statistically significant, the FDA's reviewers questioned whether it was "an adequate measure of clinical benefit" for patients with prostate cancer. The FDA's … Continue reading

Prostate Cancer Drug Carries Side Effects, FDA Says

The Food and Drug Administration will ask a panel of outside experts on Wednesday whether the benefits of Amgen's Xgeva outweigh its risks, which included bone disease in about 5 percent of patients taking the drug. Professor's Research Gives Autism a Voice
Posted: Published on February 6th, 2012
HUNTSVILLE, TX--(Marketwire -02/06/12)- The research of Sam Houston State University music therapy graduate program coordinator Hayoung Lim has been considered potentially groundbreaking for the skyrocketing number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders worldwide. Lim's first book, "Developmental Speech-Language Training through Music for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders," printed by London's Jessica Kingsley Publishers, explores the utilization of various speech-language acquisition principles to increase the communication skills of children with autism. "In my research, when I divided children with autism into the different levels of function, high-level and low-level, I found that for low-functioning children with autism, music training has more of an effect on them," she said. "For high-functioning children, both music and speech are effective, but for low-functioning children, music is more effective. "I had a lot of students who never had a functional vocabulary who just loved to respond to the music and then eventually they started to say words," she said. The book presents the theoretical explanations of why music therapy works and provides clinical interventions -- including the music, lyrics and images -- that can be used by practitioners, teachers and parents. Lim said this kind of training also could have a positive influence on … Continue reading

Hormel Institute study makes key finding in stem cell self-renewal
Posted: Published on February 6th, 2012
Public release date: 6-Feb-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Jeff Falk jfalk@umn.edu 612-626-1720 University of Minnesota A University of Minnesota-led research team has proposed a mechanism for the control of whether embryonic stem cells continue to proliferate and stay stem cells, or differentiate into adult cells like brain, liver or skin. The work has implications in two areas. In cancer treatment, it is desirable to inhibit cell proliferation. But to grow adult stem cells for transplantation to victims of injury or disease, it would be desirable to sustain proliferation until a sufficient number of cells have been produced to make a usable organ or tissue. The study gives researchers a handle on how those two competing processes might be controlled. It was performed at the university's Hormel Institute in Austin, Minn., using mouse stem cells. The researchers, led by Hormel Institute Executive Director Zigang Dong and Associate Director Ann M. Bode, have published a report in the journal Nature Structure and Molecular Biology. "This is breakthrough research and provides the molecular basis for development of regenerative medicine," said Dong. "This research will aid in the development of the next generation of drugs that make repairs and regeneration within … Continue reading
