Some still dabble in hard drugs after 50
Posted: Published on February 5th, 2012
Some people who started using hard drugs like cocaine in their youth never stopped. They're still occasional users in middle-age, a new study finds. By Diane Mapes The specter of a burned-out Baby Boomer using hard drugs way into middle age may conjure images of addiction, destruction and death. That certainly can be true, but it’s not the complete picture, at least according to a new study from researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, who found that people who occasionally use drugs like cocaine, amphetamines and opiates over the course of their lives are more common than anyone might suspect. “When you think of a drug user, you often think of someone strung-out, using every day, and in deep trouble, but national data shows that that's not the most common thing you see," says Dr. Stefan Kertesz, an associate professor in the UAB Division of Preventive Medicine. “The most common pattern is illicit drug use at lower levels." In other words, these sporadic drug users are “dabblers,” says Kertesz, lead author of the study that followed more than 4,300 people from four cities recruited between the ages of 18 to 30 in 1985 and 1986 -- and then … Continue reading

Brain Injury Rate 7 Times Greater among U.S. Prisoners
Posted: Published on February 5th, 2012
A car accident, a rough tackle, an unexpected tumble. The number of ways to bang up the brain are almost as numerous as the people who sustain these injuries. And only recently has it become clear just how damaging a seemingly minor knock can be. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is no longer just a condition acknowledged in military personnel or football players and other professional athletes. Each year some 1.7 million civilians will suffer an injury that disrupts the function of their brains, qualifying it as a TBI. About 8.5 percent of U.S. non-incarcerated adults have a history of TBI, and about 2 percent of the greater population is currently suffering from some sort of disability because of their injury. In prisons, however, approximately 60 percent of adults have had at least one TBI—and even higher prevalence has been reported in some systems. These injuries, which can alter behavior, emotion and impulse control, can keep prisoners behind bars longer and increases the odds they will end up there again. Although the majority of people who suffer a TBI will not end up in the criminal justice system, each one who does costs states an average of $29,000 a year. With … Continue reading

Institutes submit papers for stem cell conference
Posted: Published on February 5th, 2012
More than 250 participants, including key ethicists and scientists, will present their views on stem cell research and its ethics at the Qatar International Conference on Stem Cell Science and Policy due to take place in Doha this month. More than 45 national, regional and international institutes have already submitted over 70 abstracts for the conference. The abstracts examine the various challenges and opportunities that stem cell research presents, and include themes such as the therapeutic potential of stem cell research, the challenges presented by stem cell research in the context of the GCC region, the commercial applications of stem cell research, and one of the most important topics in the dialogue surrounding stem cell research – the ethics and its ramifications for stem cell guidelines and policies. “This is a unique opportunity for Qatar Foundation to continue the open dialogue it has established through its partnership with James A Baker III Institute and the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies on ethics in stem cell research,” said Faisal Mohammed al-Suwaidi, president, research and development, at Qatar Foundation. The conference is the culmination of a series of initiatives developed through this tripartite partnership to develop best ethical practice in stem cell … Continue reading

The Pet Corner: Behold! The future of modern medicine is here
Posted: Published on February 4th, 2012
Do you remember when we used to think some things were impossible? Modern technology has taught us to never say never or impossible. I think about the 1970s and 1980s growing up without cell phones, computers and many of the electronically advanced gadgets that our kids today take for granted. I can’t even imagine what the great innovators will come up with next. When I was a young child, I remember watching science fiction movies about cloning people and remember how obscure and unbelievable it seemed at the time. It was common knowledge that cloning was strictly science fiction. Now, cloning is not only possible, but a procedure that has occurred with astonishing success. Fortunately, cloning has only been performed with animals and not yet humans. Medically speaking, one of the most popular and potentially one of the most substantial advances in modern medicine is stem cell research and therapy. Initially, stem cell research was met with a great deal of resistance and controversy. The reason stem cell research had trouble getting started was because stem cells could only be collected from fetuses. With time, scientists have successfully harvested stem cells from other sources. Stem cells are primitive or extremely … Continue reading
