Abstract 3962 Animal study shows endothelial progenitor cells enhance motor function after stroke A new study found that rats, post-stroke, which were treated with endothelial progenitor cells had better functional outcomes than those left untreated. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) are produced in the bone marrow. They are "starter" cells for forming blood vessels. Higher levels of EPCs in the blood stream are associated with fewer heart attacks. In 34 male rats, researchers established baseline motor performance using a single pellet-reaching task. The animals were then divided into four groups: stroke alone, stroke plus EPC; sham plus EPC; and sham alone. Stroke was induced by delivering Endothelin-1 onto the middle cerebral artery contralateral to the preferred paw. One, three … Continue reading

Circulating Tumor Cells – Expediting Clinical Use – Molecular Medicine Tri-Conference – Video

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2012

01-02-2012 14:17 Visit our Website: http://www.triconference.com The rapid expansion in the use of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) as a diagnostic tool and a biomarker will provide a much needed tool in the treatment of cancer. The use of CTCs provides a non-invasive means of gaining early insight into tumor detection and metastasis, and has become an indispensable tool for patient management and oncology drug development. This conference dedicated to CTCs will cover a range of aspects concerning CTCs' origin, biology, characterization, enumeration and subsequent analysis. The conference will also highlight approaches to technology development that include the use of microfluidics for cell enumeration, and case studies on the clinical use of CTCs for guiding the selection of therapy and monitoring response. This meeting will bring you up to date on the state-of-the-art tools and what is needed to make these technologies robust and ready for use by the clinical community. Dr. Ramaswamy on Targeting Dormant Cancer Cells – Video

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2012

01-02-2012 14:59 Sridhar Ramaswamy, MD, Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Harvard Stem Cell Institute, discusses targeting dormant cancer cells and the possible role that they play in the development of drug resistance. Dormant cells appear in most patients with tumors. These cells are not rapidly proliferating and remain largely inactive. While these cells sleep, they are highly resistant to most types of therapy. Dormant cancer cells are intrinsically intriguing because the number of inherent mutations would denote that the cells should be rapidly proliferating. The mechanism that allows them to switch between dormant and active is yet unknown. The goal of the research is to discover the underlying cause of the dormancy, tumor progression, and the mechanism of resistance to various types of therapy. New Drug Treats Fibroids With Fewer Side Effects

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2012

Drug May Control Bleeding as Well as Older Drug Lupron, With Fewer Hot Flashes Feb. 1, 2012 -- A new drug appears to be effective for shrinking uterine fibroids and controlling the heavy menstrual bleeding they often cause, according to new research from Europe. In one study, the drug ulipristal acetate proved to be much more effective than a placebo for shrinking the non-malignant uterine tumors. In another, ulipristal acetate was found to be as effective as monthly injections of the drug Lupron for reducing heavy bleeding in women with uterine fibroids. Both studies appear in the Feb. 2 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. Ulipristal acetate is the active chemical in the emergency contraceptive sold in the U.S. as Ella, but the daily doses taken by the fibroid patients in the studies were much smaller than those in the contraceptive. If trials now under way in the U.S. prove positive, New Jersey-based Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Swiss-based PregLem hope to market ulipristal acetate as a fibroid treatment under the trade name Esmya, says Watson spokesman Charlie Mayr. 1 in 4 Women Have Fibroid Symptoms Uterine fibroids are the most common indication for the close to 600,000 hysterectomies … Continue reading

By Sarah Hale on Jan 31, 2012 in Afton, Education, Featured, Lincoln County The North Lincoln County Hospital District Board of Trustees made the decision to ‘move forward cautiously’ with regards to a proposal for an outpatient surgery center.   Architects have been working on creating initial drawings and estimates for the project. However, the hospital board would like to “put the brakes on” at this point and wait for the new medical center CEO to be named.  “There are still a lot of questions that we don’t have answers for,” Mike Hunsaker, vice president of support services at SVMC told hospital board members this week. “It is the recommendation of the finance committee that we sit on it and continue to study it for a month or two.”   Primary reasons to slow the project down include addressing staffing concerns with regards to the outpatient surgery center as well as waiting for the new medical center CEO to be named. According to Marti Halverson, chair of the hospital board, the new CEO should “have a say” in how the hospitals proceeds with the outpatient surgery center rather than step into a project that is already underway. “The CEO should be … Continue reading

Although the concept of phasing out the $1 bill in exchange for a $1 coin is hardly a new one, U.S. Senator Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., has joined a bipartisan group of other legislators in a renewed effort to do just that.  “Change can be difficult,” Enzi stated in a press release.  “But changing to more change could really result in savings for our deficit-strapped government.  Doing things as we’ve always done has contributed to our debt.  We’ve got to latch on to any reasonable handhold we can find in order to climb out of this hole.”  According to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), there has been recommendations for this change for more than two decades as a way to reduce government spending.   Senator Enzi joined Senators Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) in introducing the legislation. The proposal acknowledges that the numbers vary with differing studies, but that the savings is significant.  The GAO estimates savings of anywhere between $200 million to $500 million per year with the transition. “Some estimates put the savings at up to 11.1 billion over a 30 year cycle,” stated Dan Head, Press Secretary for Senator Enzi.  “He really … Continue reading
