Pluristem to Expand Research & Development of Radiation Exposure Treatment
Posted: Published on February 7th, 2012
HAIFA, Israel, Feb. 7, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Pluristem Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq:PSTI - News) (TASE:PLTR) today announced that following preliminary discussions with several governmental authorities, it will expand its research and development efforts on an acute radiation exposure treatment. The announcement comes as governments around the world have broadened their search for easily administered and effective radiation countermeasures. Liat Flaishon, MD, PhD, recently appointed Pluristem's Director of Business Development, will lead the company's development efforts. Dr. Flaishon joins Pluristem after serving as the director of Drug Safety Risk Management in the global drug safety and pharmacovigilance department at Teva Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Flaishon received her medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, and her PhD in Immunology from The Weizmann Institute of Science. As previously announced, Pluristem's PLX cells have achieved favorable pre-clinical data in the treatment of radiation exposure. In studies conducted by Professor Raphael Gorodetsky and his team at the Biotechnology and Radiobiology Laboratory at the Sharett Institute of Oncology at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, Pluristem's placental 3D expanded cells have demonstrated efficacy as mitigators of the acute radiation syndrome (ARS) following radiation exposure in animals that were given lethal doses of radiation and 24 … Continue reading

Intellect Neurosciences Files New Patent Applications for Immunotherapy Methods to Target Abnormal Tau Protein in …
Posted: Published on February 7th, 2012
NEW YORK, Feb. 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Intellect Neurosciences, Inc. (OTCBB:ILNS.PK - News), a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the discovery and development of disease-modifying therapeutic agents for the treatment of Alzheimer's and other neurological diseases today announced it has filed two United States and one international patent application regarding passive and active immunotherapy approaches targeting abnormal forms of tau protein that lead to death of nerve cells in Alzheimer's disease. (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20111214/NY22484LOGO) Intellect's new approach specifically targets neoepitopes that are formed following cleavage of intact tau protein by "executioner" caspases. This pathological process is stimulated by an accumulation of amyloid beta in the brain of Alzheimer's patients. It is believed that the smaller cleaved tau, sometimes referred to as delta tau, is especially toxic and prone to form tangles inside nerve cells. Importantly, Intellect's approach uses antibodies to clear this more toxic form, without risk of interfering with the functions of normal intact tau protein. "These new patent filings continue to demonstrate our leadership in translational Alzheimer's research and ongoing commitment to develop improved next-generation drug products," said Dr. Daniel G. Chain, Intellect's chairman & CEO. "We are encouraged by the results of two recent studies conducted by independent groups … Continue reading

Foundation for Mitochondrial Medicine Awards Grant to Netherlands Research
Posted: Published on February 7th, 2012
ATLANTA, Feb. 7, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Foundation for Mitochondrial Research, a US-based non-profit dedicated to funding research for the treatment of mitochondrial disease, has awarded a $50,000 grant to Professor Jan Smeitink of the Netherlands for his research involving the development of new small molecule compounds to treat mitochondrial dysfunction. The aim of Smeitink's three-year research project is to develop a novel therapy for the treatment of mitochondrial diseases, specifically targeting Leigh's disease, MELAS, LHON and Friedrich ataxia. Research shows that mitochondrial dysfunction is a central element in Autism, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig's disease among others. The funding by the Foundation for Mitochondrial Medicine will enable Smeitink and his research partners to use their specific and complementary expertise in developing new effective compounds to treat mitochondrial diseases. Recently, Khondrion, an offshoot company of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre (RUNMC) in The Netherlands, has identified several unique drug targets using its cell-based mitochondrial disease model developed in the past few years. In preliminary experiments, Smeitink and his research team provided proof that intervention aimed at these targets can restore or prevent the negative consequences of mitochondrial dysfunction at a cellular level. In this current research … Continue reading

As we all know, one possible step in transition is beginning Hormone Replacement Therapy, or HRT There are so many myths about what happens when you are on hormones. Maybe not myths so much but because There are so many different ways to prescribe hormones, you have so many different outcomes. MOST importantly, what occurs will be different for everyone! No one will react the same! So I cover the general things I have felt while being on HRT for 8 months, these are just my experiences- Not intended to diagnose or take the place of consulting a doctor. I am not going to include what I take or how I take it because I am not a doctor nor would want someone to take unsafe measures with hormones. I believe you at least need to consult a certified physician at some point when on hormones. So that you can get a recommended plan and dosage! I hope this video is helpful! Susan M. Love: HRT Questioned Again — Really?
Posted: Published on February 7th, 2012
Once again we are returning to the question of whether menopausal hormone replacement therapy (HRT) increases breast cancer risk. The recent issue of Journal of Family Planning and Health Care contains an article by two researchers who argue that the data used in the previously reported Million Women Study? is too flawed to support its widely-heralded finding that HRT use increases breast cancer risk. The Million Women Study is an observational study that found that women who used estrogen and progestin had an increased risk of developing breast cancer. It is well understood that epidemiologic studies like the Million Women Study can only prove correlations, and not cause and effect. In fact, there are several observational studies that supported the use of HRT to prevent heart disease, a finding that was not born out when randomized trials were done. Moreover, the Million Women Study is not the only study to come to this conclusion, nor is it the key study that most researchers point to when talking about the risks associated with HRT. That study is the Women's Health Initiative, a randomized placebo-controlled trial that was specifically designed to measure the benefits and risks of menopausal hormone therapy -- and … Continue reading
