Genetically modified T cell therapy shown to be safe, lasting in decade-long study of HIV patients
Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2012
Public release date: 2-May-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Holly Auer holly.auer@uphs.upenn.edu 215-200-2313 University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine PHILADELPHIA -- HIV patients treated with genetically modified T cells remain healthy up to 11 years after initial therapy, researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania report in the new issue of Science Translational Medicine. The results provide a framework for the use of this type of gene therapy as a powerful weapon in the treatment of HIV, cancer, and a wide variety of other diseases. "We have 43 patients and they are all healthy," says senior author Carl June, MD, a professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Penn Medicine. "And out of those, 41 patients show long term persistence of the modified T cells in their bodies." Early gene therapy studies raised concern that gene transfer to cells via retroviruses might lead to leukemia in a substantial proportion of patients, due to mutations that may arise in genes when new DNA is inserted. The new long-term data, however, allay that concern in T cells, further buoying the hope generated by work June's team published in 2011 showing the eradication of tumors in … Continue reading

VistaGen Licenses Breakthrough Stem Cell Culture Technology To Speed Development Of Drug Screening And Cell Therapy …
Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2012
South San Francisco, CA (Marketwire) - VistaGen Therapeutics, Inc. (OTCBB:VSTA) (OTCQB:VSTA), a biotechnology company applying stem cell technology for drug rescue and cell therapy, has licensed breakthrough stem cell culture technology from the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine located at the University Health Network (UHN) in Toronto, Canada. VistaGen will be utilizing the licensed technology to develop hematopoietic precursor stem cells from human pluripotent stem cells, with the goal of developing drug screening and cell therapy applications for human blood system disorders. The breakthrough technology is included in a new United States patent application. Hematopoietic precursor stem cells give rise to all red and white blood cells and platelets in the body. VistaGen will use the UHN invention to improve the cell culture methods used to efficiently produce hematopoietic stem cell populations. "This technology dramatically advances our ability to produce and purify this important blood stem cell precursor for both in vitro drug screening and in vivo cell therapy applications," said H. Ralph Snodgrass, PhD, VistaGen's President and Chief Scientific Officer. "In addition to defining new cell culture methods for our use, the technology describes the surface characteristics of stem cell-derived adult hematopoietic stem cells. Most groups study embryonic blood … Continue reading

Study using stem cell therapy shows promise in fight against HIV
Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2012
Public release date: 1-May-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Charles Casey charles.casey@ucdmc.ucdavis.edu 916-734-9048 University of California - Davis Health System UC Davis Health System researchers are a step closer to launching human clinical trials involving the use of an innovative stem cell therapy to fight the virus that causes AIDS. In a paper published in the May issue of the Journal of Virology, the UC Davis HIV team demonstrated both the safety and efficacy of transplanting anti-HIV stem cells into mice that represent models of infected patients. The technique, which involves replacing the immune system with stem cells engineered with a triple combination of HIV-resistant genes, proved capable of replicating a normally functioning human immune system by protecting and expanding HIV-resistant immune cells. The cells thrived and self-renewed even when challenged with an HIV viral load. "We envision this as a potential functional cure for patients infected with HIV, giving them the ability to maintain a normal immune system through genetic resistance," said lead author Joseph Anderson, an assistant adjunct professor of internal medicine and a stem cell researcher at the UC Davis Institute for Regenerative Cures. "Ideally, it would be a one-time treatment through which stem cells … Continue reading

Trashed Mission District businesses want answers
Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2012
Business owners in San Francisco's Mission District, cleaning up after a night in which protesters damaged more than 30 stores and restaurants and vandalized cars, questioned Tuesday why activists had singled them out and why police hadn't done more to halt the rampage. Among those dealing with the damage were officers at the neighborhood police station, where black-clad, masked activists threw paint and bashed the front door Monday night. Even as they defended themselves from criticism that they had allowed the vandals to run wild - one restaurant owner said officers even appeared to be "escorting" the group - high-level police officials met to find a better way to handle out-of-control crowds. The protesters split away at 9 p.m. from an Occupy rally in Dolores Park that was held in advance of Tuesday's May Day actions. Traveling down 18th Street and onto Valencia Street, they smashed windows with crowbars and signs, threw paint and eggs on buildings and spray-painted anarchy symbols on the hoods of parked cars. "All I heard was, 'bang, bang, bang,' and some dude had the valet sign, trying to break our window," said Adam Koskoff, manager of the Locanda restaurant on Valencia. "I didn't even see … Continue reading

California man sues BMW for persistent erection
Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2012
SAN FRANCISCO (WBTV) - A California man has filed a lawsuit against a motorcycle maker and a motorcycle seat maker after he claims he suffered injuries that hurt his sexual life. Henry Wolf, 52, claims he suffered the injury during a four-hour motorcycle ride in May 2010, according to a lawsuit filed in California last week. The lawsuit says Wolf was riding his 1993 BMW motorcycle, which was fitted with a Corbin-Pacific seat, when he suffered a severe case of priapism - a persistent lasting erection. "My client has suffered a serious injury; a complete erection for a year and a half," lawyer Vernon Bradley from Sausalito, California told WBTV on Monday afternoon. "Now he suffers from impotency." Bradley says Wolf got medical opinions from three different doctors, including an expert on priapism from the University of California-San Francisco. According to the lawsuit, Wolf claims his injury was caused by the "ridge-like seat on his motorcycle" which he claims was "negligently designed, manufactured and/or installed by the defendants." Wolf claims he's suffered from the long lasting erections for 20-months after the injury occurred. "He is now unable to engage in sexual activity, which is causing him substantial emotional and mental … Continue reading

Watch Out, Viagra: FDA Approves a Fast-Acting Erectile Dysfunction Drug
Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2012
Paul Bradbury / Getty Images Last Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvedStendra, the first new drug in a decade to treat erectile dysfunction. Stendra, the brand name for avanafil, is sold by Vivus Inc. and willcompete with other erectile-dysfunction drugs currently on the market: Pfizers Viagra, Eli Lillys Cialis and GlaxoSmithKline and Bayers Levitra. Like its competitors, Stendra is among a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, which work by increasing blood flow to the penis. Based on clinical trials, Stendra may kick in faster than its counterparts possibly in as little as 15 minutes. This is potentially the fastest acting of the four, Dr. Wayne Hellstrom, a professor of urology at Tulane University School of Medicine, in New Orleans, told Reuters. (MORE: Could the Cuddle Chemical Oxytocin Improve Male Sexual Function?) In clinical trials, 77% of men with general erectile dysfunction were able to get erections after taking Stendra, compared with 54% of men taking a placebo. Intercourse was successful for 57% of the men on Stendra, compared with 27% of men on the placebo, WebMD reports. This approval expands the available treatment options to men experiencing erectile dysfunction, and enables patients, in … Continue reading
