Medicaid approved for Smithfield teen in a coma
Posted: Published on July 8th, 2012
Raleigh, N.C. A Smithfield father fighting a Raleigh hospital to keep legal guardianship of his son has been able to secure Medicaid benefits to cover the teen's treatment for a traumatic brain injury. Freddie Lempe, 18, has been in a coma at WakeMed since a car wreck in March 2011. His father, Fred Lempe, says Medicaid coverage for his son was dropped in December when he turned 18. The hospital has said that the teen was denied coverage because his father failed to file the paperwork. It wants the court to appoint a guardian for Freddie who would be legally authorized to make all medical decisions. Fred Lempe has said he's gotten conflicting information from the Johnston County Department of Social Services about what was required. Calls and emails to WakeMed were not immediately returned Friday afternoon, and it's unclear whether the hospital will pursue its request in the court system. A hearing is scheduled for July 25. County jail to house 75 more state inmates
Posted: Published on July 8th, 2012
MILLARD Pearl River Countys jail soon will house up to 75 more state inmates as they participate in a program that will help them beat drug and alcohol dependency before they are released. The program is administered under the Mississippi Department of Corrections and will generate about $300,000 in additional revenue for the county, said Chief Deputy Shane Tucker. Within a month all of the state prisoners will have arrived at the jail and begin the program. Tucker said the Pearl River County jails recent accreditation by the American Correctional Association has enabled the jail to participate in the program. Tucker said the only other facility in south Mississippi qualified to run the program is in Leakesville in Greene County. The program is a mandate by MDOC before state inmates are released from jail, and uses an intensive drug and alcohol rehabilitation curriculum to help break inmates dependency on such substances, Tucker said. Approval of this program by Commissioner Christopher Epps enables the jail to hold up to 75 more state inmates. MDOC will pay the county $20 per day per inmate. Tucker said after the expenses have been factored in to cover each inmates housing, food and the expense … Continue reading

Personalized Medicine for Parkinson's Disease
Posted: Published on July 7th, 2012
Washington, D.C. - infoZine - Researchers have taken a step toward personalized medicine for Parkinson's disease, by investigating signs of the disease in patient-derived cells and testing how the cells respond to drug treatments. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health. The researchers collected skin cells from patients with genetically inherited forms of Parkinson's and reprogrammed those cells into neurons. They found that neurons derived from individuals with distinct types of Parkinson's showed common signs of distress and vulnerability -- in particular, abnormalities in the cellular energy factories known as mitochondria. At the same time, the cells' responses to different treatments depended on the type of Parkinson's each patient had. The results were published in Science Translational Medicine. "These findings suggest new opportunities for clinical trials of Parkinson's disease, in which cell reprogramming technology could be used to identify the patients most likely to respond to a particular intervention," said Margaret Sutherland, Ph.D., a program director at NIH's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). A consortium of researchers conducted the study with primary funding from NINDS. The consortium is led by Ole Isacson, M.D., Ph.D., a professor of neurology at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical … Continue reading

In last weeks article we briefly looked at the legislation pertaining to fireworksmanufacture, importation, sale and usagefor Trinidad and Tobago. This week we focus on the effects to animals, management and treatment.Over the past year, I have been compiling data on the reactions of domestic dogs and cats to loud noises such as thunder and fireworks. The results of my survey indicate that of the 110 animals studied, 55 per cent showed moderate fear to severe phobic behaviour. Nights fraught with fireworks (such as Divali, Independence and New Years Eve) have the highest incidence of animals which run away from home in terror, injure themselves while trying to escape the distress they feel, or suffer silently while their owners drug them up. Remember that dogs and cats experience the world through their senses: nose first, then ears, eyes, tongue and paws. Their senses of smell and sound detection are far more attuned and sensitive than ours, which is why they can detect certain stimuli quicker than we can. If you have an animal who is scared of thunder, ever noticed how its behaviour changes with the weather? Bright blue skies and shining sun yet he becomes subdued, whimpers and starts … Continue reading

Stem cell therapy 'turns back clock'

MANILA, Philippines Stem cell therapy, aside from being a potential cure for a wide range of illnesses, can also make a patient look and feel younger, a stem cell therapist said. Dr. Ricardo Quiones, a cosmetic surgeon and dermatologist, has trained to conduct stem cell therapy, which he describes as the future of medicine. Quiones said stem cell therapy has become popular for its ability to regenerate and heal properties of adult stem cells. As we grow old, our stem cells dramatically decline. When we were children, we had 80 million stem cells. As we reach the age of 40, our stem cells decline to 35 million, he told Mornings@ANC on Friday. Quiones explained that the procedure is similar to turning back the clock because it can increase a persons stem cells to 100 million. Ive done two patients from Zamboanga City. I called them up after the procedure and they told me they look younger. They have the stamina, the vigor and they have felt an increase in short-term memory, powers of attention and concentration, he said. Quiones also said the procedure has the potential to cure diabetes, heart damage, brain damage such as Parkinsons and Alzheimers, osteoarthritis, stroke, … Continue reading

First Study Targeting Colorectal Cancer Stem Cells to Begin
Posted: Published on July 7th, 2012
SCHAUMBURG, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Gateway for Cancer ResearchSM (www.demandcurestoday.org) announces an exciting new Gateway-funded phase II study using ADAPT therapy for treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer based on a 2010 AACR presentation by Dr. Lin and his collaborators. The clinical trial, being led by Dr. Edward Lin, a medical oncologist at the University of Washington, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and an accomplished researcher and expert in gastrointestinal cancers, is the first to specifically target colon cancer stem cells. The study will use a unique combination drug therapy of Capecitabine (a chemotherapy drug) and Celecoxib (an FDA approved arthritis medication) to wake up and to kill colon cancer stem cells. The treatment works by activating cancer stem cells that hibernate during chemotherapya chief cause of treatment failureso they can be destroyed. The proper sequence is necessary to consistently kill the dormant cells. The ADAPT concept was proposed by Drs. Lin and Linheng Li, a prominent stem cell biologist. It is a very powerful drug combination with good preliminary results. Pilot studies have shown significantly increased survival rates compared with conventional therapy. Of 124 treated patients, 40% of those treated with this protocol achieved complete remission or near remission with a … Continue reading

Antibodies from rabbits reduce risks associated with

Public release date: 6-Jul-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: John Wallace wallacej@vcu.edu 804-628-1550 Virginia Commonwealth University Richmond, Va. (July 9, 2012) Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Massey Cancer Center's Bone Marrow Transplant Program have demonstrated that the use of antibodies derived from rabbits can improve the survival and relapse outcomes of leukemia and myelodysplasia patients receiving a stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor. Recently published in the journal Bone Marrow Transplantation, a study led by Amir Toor, M.D., hematologist-oncologist in the Bone Marrow Transplant Program and member of the Developmental Therapeutics program at VCU Massey Cancer Center, retrospectively compared the outcomes of 50 patients who received rabbit anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) before receiving a transplant of stem cells from an unrelated donor to the outcomes of 48 patients who received a transplant of stem cells from a related donor. While unrelated stem cell transplants typically have poorer outcomes than related stem cell transplants, the results from this study showed similar outcomes for each group in terms of mortality, relapse and the development of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), a common complication that can occur after a stem cell or bone marrow transplant in which the newly transplanted material attacks … Continue reading
