WHI In dbGAP On Wednesday January 13, 2010, NCBI released the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) SNP Health Association Resource (SHARe) dataset on dbGAP. The dataset includes extensive phenotypic and genotypic data on 12008 African American and Hispanic women aged 50-79 enrolled in one or more components of the WHI program. Genotyping was done on the Affymetrix 6.0 platform. Information on the dataset are to be found at: dbGAP Additional release information may be found at: Study Release Notes Any investigator can apply for access to the dataset through the dbGAP procedures; however, per NIH GWAS policy the WHI investigators have a 12-month protected publication window. WHI investigators welcome collaboration from other investigators within the 12-month protected time and beyond. WHI investigators also invite collaboration on publications and ancillary studies beyond SHARe. Information on how to collaborate with WHI investigators on SHARe and on other WHI resources are found at: WHI Scientific Resources Website The Women's Health Initiative (WHI) was a major 15-year research program to address the most common causes of death, disability and poor quality of life in postmenopausal women -- cardiovascular disease, cancer, and osteoporosis. The WHI was launched in 1991 and consisted of a set of clinical … Continue reading

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are fibroblast-like cells isolated from bone marrow, adipose, and other tissues - including cord blood, peripheral blood, fetal liver, skeletal muscle, placenta, amniotic fluid and synovium.1-7See MoreThese are all vascularized tissues, and accumulating evidence suggests that MSCs are pericytes8 which closely encircle endothelial cells in capillaries and microvessels of multiple organs.8-15 MSCs are defined by properties exhibited following in vitro culture. Namely the ability to self-renew, differentiate into bone, adipose and cartilage tissue,16 the expression of CD105, CD73 and CD90, and the lack of expression of CD45, CD34,CD11b and HLA-DR. While originally coined mesenchymal stem cells,17 MSCs are also referred to by other terms, such as multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells,16,18 mesenchymal progenitor cells19 or medicinal signaling cells.20 No single term has been uniformly adopted, and as a result, the acronym MSC is commonly used to encompass all terminologies applied to these cells. MSCs have potential utility in a range of cellular therapies, with applications relating to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and as vehicles for gene therapy.21-24 To realize the therapeutic potential of MSCs, studies in animal models are of fundamental importance. Because MSCs are rare, occurring at an estimated frequency of 1 in 100,000 cells … Continue reading

Brain Injury Rehabilitation – Cognitive

Posted: Published on July 17th, 2016

Brain injury rehabilitation involves two essential processes: restoration of functions that can be restored and learning how to do things differently when functions cannot be restored to pre-injury level. Brain injury rehabilitation is is based on the nature and scope of neuropsychological symptoms identified on special batteries of test designed to measure brain functioning following brain injury. While practice in various cognitive tasks--doing arithmetic problems, solving logic puzzles, concentration skills, or reading--may help brain rehabilitation, this is usually not enough. Brain injury rehabilitation must be designed taking into account a broad range of neuro-functional strengths and weaknesses. Basic skills must be strengthened before more complex skills are added. Only through comprehensive neuropsychological analysis can the many possible effects of brain injury be sorted out. This pattern of functional strengths and weaknesses becomes the foundation for designing a program of brain rehabilitation. Brain recovery follows patterns of brain development. Gross or large-scale systems must develop (or be retrained) before fine systems. Attention, focus, and perceptual skills develop (or are retrained) before complex intellectual activity can be successful. What Are the Cognitive and Communication Problems That Result From Traumatic Brain Injury? Go here to see the original: Brain Injury Rehabilitation - Cognitive … Continue reading

Isabel Rojas Identity is an interesting concept. For the most part we like to believe that we define our own identity. The truth is a lot goes into defining our identity. And what it comes down to is what we accept as our own. The more we know about ourselves, our own experiences, our families past and heritage, and so on - the more our own identity changes and evolves and becomes further defined in our minds and accepted as our own. I have a lot of thoughts and experiences around this topic that have caused my own identity do grow and evolve over time. Here is a snap shot: I was born in NYC, the youngest of 5 kids. My parents and three older siblings were born in Bogota, Colombia. My family migrated to NYC in the late 70s looking for a better life. After my brother and I were born in the early 80s my parents had begun to realize what a dangerous city it was at that time and decided to head back to Colombia. They worked hard to build a 3 story building where we would live, work, and rent out space. It was a 3 … Continue reading

Hormone Replacement Therapy for Men – Healthline

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2016

You may consider hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to be a women's-only concern, but it's not. Men's testosterone levels peak in their late teens, and begin a gradual but steady decline of about 1 percent a year around age 30 (Mayo Clinic, 2012). Because testosterone is required for proper male sexual development and reproductive functionas well as muscle bulk, red blood cell level, and bone densitymany men worry about the natural decline of this hormone produced by the testicles. Yet medical experts disagree about the significance of this decline, and whether the health benefits of HRT outweigh the risks. If testosterone levels decline naturally with age, do men need HRT? This has been a difficult question for researchers to answer. Not many studies have observed the effects of testosterone therapy in men with healthy levels of the hormoneand studies that have were smaller and yielded unclear results. HRT can help symptoms of low testosterone in men who suffer from a disease called hypogonadism (Mayo Clinic, 2012). This is a dysfunction of the testicles that results in the body being unable to produce the right amount of testosterone. But what's less certain is whether testosterone therapy can benefit healthy men whose testosterone … Continue reading
