Ulcerative Colitis – Netdoctor

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2016

Reviewed byDrJeniWorden, GP Ulcerative colitis is a superficial inflammation of the large intestine, not caused by bacteria, which results in ulceration and bleeding. The patient typically experiences alternating periods with no or few symptoms, and periods with frequent stomach pains and diarrhoea that is mixed with pus, blood, and mucus. It's rare in the UK, with one new case per 10,000 people per year. Currently, there are approximately 146,000 patients with ulcerative colitis and usually they are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 25-years-old, with a smaller peak between 55 and 65 years old. People of Asian origin are less likely to be affected, and men and women are equally affected. The exact cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown. Hereditary, infectious and immunological factors have been proposed as possible causes. Flare-ups cannot be prevented, but the severity and extent of the attacks can be reduced. It's important that affected people follow preventive treatments carefully, watch out for symptoms and consult their doctor if there is blood in their stool. Severe, acute flare-ups may confine the patient to bed. When the symptoms subside, the patient should be able to resume their normal activities. There are no dietary restrictions because changes … Continue reading

Treatment for cirrhosis depends on the cause and extent of your liver damage. The goals of treatment are to slow the progression of scar tissue in the liver and to prevent or treat symptoms and complications of cirrhosis. You may need to be hospitalized if you have severe liver damage. In early cirrhosis, it may be possible to minimize damage to the liver by treating the underlying cause. The options include: Other medications can relieve certain symptoms, such as itching, fatigue and pain. Nutritional supplements may be prescribed to counter malnutrition associated with cirrhosis and to prevent osteoporosis (weak bones). Your doctor will work to treat any complications of cirrhosis, including: Portal hypertension. Blood pressure medications may control increased pressure in the veins that supply the liver (portal hypertension) and prevent severe bleeding. Your doctor will perform an upper endoscopy at regular intervals to look for enlarged veins in the esophagus or stomach (varices) that may bleed. If you develop varices, you likely will need medication to reduce the risk of bleeding. If you are not able to tolerate medication and have signs that the varices are bleeding or are likely to bleed, you may need a procedure (band ligation) … Continue reading

What You Need to Know About Avonex – MS Treatment

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2016

Updated December 18, 2014. I am not going to tell you why you should be on disease-modifying therapy for MS. Instead, I want to provide some information to help you decide if Avonex is the right choice for you as you consider the various existing disease-modifying therapies (DMT). I know that the decision-making process around MS treatment can be confusing and stressful, with the drug companies presenting information on colorful websites with testimonials from smiling patients who swear by their drug of choice. My goal is to give you the practical information that I was interested in when I was trying to make a decision about which MS treatment to start. Avonex: The Bottom Line Avonex (Interferon beta-1a) provides the lowest dose of all the interferons (30mcg/week, while Rebif is 44mcg 3 times/week). There is some evidence that higher-dose interferons may be more effective in some patients, and many doctors switch their patients to Rebif if they have several relapses on Avonex. That said, it is still true that all of the CRAB drugs (Copaxone, Rebif, Avonex, Betaseron) are pretty much equally effective overall, offering about one-third reduction in relapses when compared to a placebo over two years in people … Continue reading

Multiple Sclerosis Drugs Exploring Your Options

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2016

Blend Images - ERproductions Ltd/Brand X Pictures/Getty Images Updated December 15, 2014. Multiple sclerosis drugs can alter the course of multiple sclerosis by slowing the progression of the disease. And since my diagnosis, I have heard more than once that I picked a great time to have multiple sclerosis because of the variety of MS drugs now out on the market. Betaseron, Copaxone, Avonex and others work to modify the disease, but are all different from one another to some degree. Before working with your doctor to choose an MS drug that is right for you, you should review the differences in these medications carefully. It is just since the mid-1990s that there has been any treatment for multiple sclerosis itself prior to this, doctors and patients relied on corticosteroids to shorten relapses, medications to address different symptoms, and physical and occupational therapy to adjust to and slow disability. The disease-modifying drugs have been shown to do just what they claim modify the actual course of MS. They do this by reducing the number and frequency of new lesions, especially the ones that cause relapses. One thing to remember when looking at the different medications is that effectiveness is reported … Continue reading

Early diagnosis and treatment helps young children with autism develop to their full potential. The primary goal of treatment is to improve the overall ability of the child to function. Symptoms and behaviors of autism can combine in many ways and vary in severity. Also, individual symptoms and behaviors often change over time. For these reasons, treatment strategies are tailored to individual needs and available family resources. But in general children with autism respond best to highly structured and specialized treatment. A program that addresses helping parents and improving communication, social, behavioral, adaptive, and learning aspects of a child's life will be most successful. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the following strategies for helping a child to improve overall function and reach his or her potential:6 Many people with autism have sleep problems. Indication Rebif (interferon beta-1a) is used to treat relapsing forms of MS to decrease the frequency of relapses and delay the occurrence of some of the physical disability that is common in people with MS.
