A doctor who treated a teenager with cerebral palsy before his death has denied a claim the patient received a poor standard of care because he was disabled.
Adam Bojelian, who had quadriplegic cerebral palsy, died in March 2015 from multiple organ failure as a result of bacterial infection, an inquest at Wakefield Coroner's Court heard.
His mother, Zoe Bojelian, told the inquest she felt his hospital in Leeds had a culture of excluding parents and that staff felt it was not worth putting in the resources because her son was disabled.
Dr Philip Chetcuti, who was a paediatric consultant at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said the claims were untrue.
He told the inquest: "A large part of our workload in paediatrics is looking after children with severe disabilities.
"We give everything to look after them and others, and to help them. That's just not the case (that he was given a poor standard of care)."
Dr Chetcuti told the inquest Adam had lung disease, was vulnerable to infection and frequently had to take strong antibiotics.
He said: "We started to see a spiral of decline that we couldn't do anything about.
"He was on a really, really strong, powerful regime of triple antibiotics.
"Antibiotics have side-effects, it's a situation that was becoming more and more difficult because we weren't winning, we didn't know how to win.
"I didn't know how to make Adam better. I didn't know anybody who knew how to make Adam better. I wish I had."
The inquest heard the hospital did not have a care plan for Adam during his time under Dr Chetcuti's care, despite his parents giving him a document from his previous hospital in Edinburgh.
The doctor said: "In retrospect, this document would have been useful.
"It's putting down what we know but it's doing it in a logical way with a plan. I think that would have been of some benefit."
The inquest also heard a communication plan was drawn up in 2013, the year Adam arrived in Leeds, based on his ability to communicate through blinking.
Dr Chetcuti said Adam - who went to a mainstream school and won awards for his poetry, which he composed through blinking at letters - could communicate but anything more complex than "yes" or "no" had to be interpreted by his parents.
He said: "I talked a lot to Adam, as I would to every severely disabled child.
"There were times when he was alert and bright and he would appear he was very aware of me and he would respond by blinking.
"I wouldn't know how to interpret that. His parents would interpret that on his behalf."
The inquest heard Mrs Bojelian believes sepsis should have been included as a cause of death on her son's post-mortem examination report and he should have been treated in a paediatric intensive care unit, rather than on a ward.
Dr Chetcuti said he did not accept a report that claimed Adam was not safe on the ward.
A diary entry written by Mrs Bojelian at the time and read to the inquest on Monday described how she and her husband were "exhausted" by being left alone to care for Adam in hospital, despite him having funding for one-to-one care.
The inquest continues.
