Everything from pirate games to bioengineering – Shanghai Daily (subscription)

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2017

I applied for the trip because I thought it sounded enjoyable and exciting and I would be able to learn about new things. I most enjoyed Pirate Training, where we got to make cannons, take part in fencing and archery and play capture the flag in an ice rink. These are things I never thought I would do. Meeting the other students from NAE was great because they all seemed very similar to me and that made me feel a lot more confident about myself. It was also good fun to make new friends from around the world who I can continue to connect with through Nord Anglias Global Classroom. MIT was a huge university, if I went there Id worry about getting lost but it looked like a nice place to live and learn. The same can be said for Harvard, which we also really enjoyed spending time at and learning about. If youre lucky enough to be picked next year, be prepared to take part in a range of activities which will make you work hard both physically and mentally, and pack some comfortable shoes as the MIT and Harvard sites are big and we did a lot … Continue reading

Scientists One Step Closer To 3-D-Printed Ovaries To Treat Infertility – NPR

Posted: Published on May 20th, 2017

A microscopic view of the gelatin structure used to 3-D print a bioprosthetic mouse ovary implant. Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine hide caption A microscopic view of the gelatin structure used to 3-D print a bioprosthetic mouse ovary implant. The list of things that can be created with 3-D printers keeps getting longer: jewelry, art, guns, food, medical devices and, now, mouse ovaries. Scientists have used a 3-D printer to create a mouse ovary capable of producing healthy offspring. And researchers hope to create replacement human ovaries the same way someday. "It's really the holy grail of bioengineering for regenerative medicine," says Teresa Woodruff, who led the new research published this week in the journal Nature Communications. The ultimate goal is to create replacement ovaries to restore fertility in women who became sterile after medical treatment, such as cancer chemotherapy, Woodruff says. She hopes to test a human ovary within a few years. For some time now, doctors have been able to restore the fertility of certain cancer patients by removing and freezing some of their ovarian tissue before they undergo chemotherapy and transplanting it back into them later. Some doctors have even tried doing the same thing with … Continue reading

Prosthetic ovary created in breakthrough that could lead to ‘holy grail … – The Independent

Posted: Published on May 17th, 2017

Mice whose ovaries were removed and replaced with an artificial structure were able to have offspring naturally, scientists have revealed in a breakthrough that could lead to the holy grail of bioengineering in humans. The ovarystructurewas 3D-printed using gelatin to create a latticethat could house follicles containing the eggs. The researchers said the new technique could one day be used to restore fertility to women rendered infertile by cancer treatment. And they also suggested it could also help design a range of artificial organs that could be used instead of transplants from dead people, which require the patient to take immune-suppressing drugs for the rest of their lives. One of the researchers, Professor Teresa Woodruff, of Northwestern University in the US, said: Using bioengineering, instead of transplanting from a cadaver, to create organ structures that function and restore the health of that tissue for that person, is the holy grail of bioengineering for regenerative medicine. The exciting part of this new discovery is that we are going to be able to build ovaries that we hope one day will help restore fertility to young cancer survivors as well as children going through puberty who have been treated with life-preserving cancer … Continue reading
