Robotics Meet X-ray Lasers In Cutting-Edge Biology Studies

Posted: Published on November 25th, 2014

Platform Brings Speed, Precision in Determining 3-D Structure of Challenging Biological Molecules Scientists at the Department of Energys SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory are combining the speed and precision of robots with one of the brightest X-ray lasers on the planet for pioneering studies of proteins important to biology and drug discovery. The new system uses robotics and other automated components to precisely maneuver delicate samples for study with the X-ray laser pulses at SLACs Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS). This will speed efforts to map the 3-D structures of nanoscale crystallized proteins, which are important for designing targeted drugs and synthesizing natural systems and processes. A New Way to Study Biology "This is an efficient, highly reliable and automated way to obtain high-resolution 3-D structural information from small sizes and volumes of samples, and from samples that are too delicate to study using other X-ray sources and techniques," said Aina Cohen, who oversaw the development of the platform in collaboration with staff at LCLS and at SLACs Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), both DOE Office of Science User Facilities. She is co-leader of the Macromolecular Crystallography group in the Structural Molecular Biology (SMB) program at SSRL, which has used robotic … Continue reading

Biology trumps chemistry in open ocean

Posted: Published on November 25th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 24-Nov-2014 Contact: Darlene Crist dtcrist@bigelow.org 207-315-2567 x103 Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences @BigelowLab Single-cell phytoplankton in the ocean are responsible for roughly half of global oxygen production, despite vast tracts of the open ocean that are devoid of life-sustaining nutrients. While phytoplankton's ability to adjust their physiology to exploit limited nutrients in the open ocean has been well documented, little is understood about how variations in microbial biodiversity -- the number and variety of marine microbes - affects global ocean function. In a paper published in PNAS on Monday November 24, scientists laid out a robust new framework based on in situ observations that will allow scientists to describe and understand how phytoplankton assimilate limited concentrations of phosphorus, a key nutrient, in the ocean in ways that better reflect what is actually occurring in the marine environment. This is an important advance because nutrient uptake is a central property of ocean biogeochemistry, and in many regions controls carbon dioxide fixation, which ultimately can play a role in mitigating climate change. "Until now, our understanding of how phytoplankton assimilate nutrients in an extremely nutrient-limited environment was based on lab cultures that poorly represented what happens in natural populations," … Continue reading

COURTESY PHOTO Sun staff photos can be ordered by visiting our SmugMug site. Seniors in the Andrea Knowles' Advanced Placement Biology class at Nashoba Valley Technical High School recently visited the Nashua River Watershed Association's headquarters in Groton to participate in its River Classroom, where they learned about the Nashua River's past, present and future. Students also got to canoe on the river and test the water's pH density, dissolved oxygen and water turbidity, then scooped invertebrates from shallow water and identified the life forms along the water's edge. Sun staff photos can be ordered by visiting our SmugMug site. More here: Nashoba Tech AP Biology students tour Nashua River … Continue reading
