Transforming undergraduate biology education
Posted: Published on June 4th, 2014
During the past few decades, the field of biology has dramatically expanded, incorporating many diverse sub-disciplines and specialty areas such as microbiology and evolutionary biology. However, teaching biology to undergraduate students has not kept pace with the changes, and core biology curriculum varies widely from university to university, and classroom to classroom. In an effort to both capture the diversity of biology and condense what is taught, an Arizona State University researcher is leading a grassroots effort to improve biology education throughout the United States. Working with a team from the University of Washington to collect feedback from more than 240 biologists nationwide, ASU assistant professor Sara Brownell has developed a new, detailed core concept template called BioCore Guide. The guide is intended to provide an updated blueprint for educators to help them clarify the learning outcomes for undergraduate students majoring in general biology. "What we really wanted to articulate was, at the end of four years, what do we want a graduating general biology major to know about the core concepts of biology?" asked Brownell, an education researcher with ASU's School of Life Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. "Even if they end up specializing in … Continue reading

All systems Tao: Holistic view of life’s networks

Continue reading page |1|2 Causality works bottom-up and top-down at once (Image: David Maitland/Millennium Images) Fritjof Capra goes beyond The Tao of Physics with The Systems View of Life, a much-needed vision of biology with a dash of Eastern mysticism WHEN I was about 17, I was briefly transfixed by the teachings of Eastern mysticism. I read everything I could about Zen Buddhism and Taoism, and pored over books by spiritual figures who claimed that ordinary consciousness could be transcended through discipline and meditation. I had tantalising visions of suddenly achieving "enlightenment" or "oneness" with the Godhead (although I had no idea what that was). To me, it all sounded impossibly cool. As I also loved mathematics and physics, I picked up the bestselling bookThe Tao of Physics by physicist Fritjof Capra. It introduced me to weird concepts from quantum theory: things like entanglement and non-locality, which Einstein famously called "spooky action at a distance". Capra convinced me there were surprising parallels between these aspects of modern physics and Eastern mysticism, that what Buddhists had been saying for centuries about the interconnectedness of everything in the universe sat quite well with today's physics. His wonderful book kindled a fascination with … Continue reading

Unexpected diversity of egg yolk proteins play a key role in ant sociality and castes
Posted: Published on June 4th, 2014
PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 3-Jun-2014 Contact: Joe Caspermeyer MBEpress@gmail.com 480-258-8972 Molecular Biology and Evolution (Oxford University Press) The social insects, including bees, wasps, ants and termites have developed a highly advanced society where division of labor amongst workers to serve the queen's reproduction has long fascinated biologists who have wanted to uncover the molecular pathways driving the complex behavior of insect societies. In the advanced online edition of Molecular Biology and Evolution, Claire Morandin et al. performed molecular evolutionary analyses on the egg yolk forming protein, Vitellogenin (Vg), and its many forms, amongst seven Formica ant species. Vitellogenin is known to play a role in the fate and regulation of insect social castes, with previous studies showing Vg expression most prevalent in queens and much lower in the workers. The University of Helsinki research team discovered three new copies of Vg, called homologues, and examined these in both non-reproductive workers and queens. They demonstrated that the three new homologues of Vg were the result of ancient gene duplications, and that each of these copies plays a different role in ant societies. In contrast to earlier studies, Vitellogenin was not found to be upregulated in the queens, and the caste bias of … Continue reading

Common cholesterol drug greatly alters inflammatory response to common cold
Posted: Published on June 2nd, 2014
PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 2-Jun-2014 Contact: Cody Mooneyhan cmooneyhan@faseb.org 301-634-7104 Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Cold season may be just behind us, but a new discovery may shed light on how this common condition triggers asthma attacks. In a new research report published in the June 2014 issue of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, researchers show that in individuals with asthma, statins significantly reduce the in vitro inflammatory response of human monocytes to rhinovirus (RV), the cause of the common cold. Not only does this discovery suggest that statins could help prevent or reduce the severity of asthma symptoms resulting from colds, but may also open the doors to further research into novel ways of controlling asthma attacks. "Our findings--that statins reduce rhinovirus-induced CXCL10 secretion from human monocytic cells--suggest that these frequently prescribed drugs may affect asthma exacerbations caused by the common cold in adults," said Lisa E. Wickert, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Department of Biomolecular Chemistry and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, Wisconsin. "We hope that these findings will provide motivation to study how statins not only affect asthma symptoms but more specifically viral-induced asthma exacerbations." To make their … Continue reading
