Synthetic biology still in uncharted waters of public opinion

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2014

The Synthetic Biology Project at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars is releasing the results of a new set of focus groups, which find continued low awareness of synthetic biology among the general public. The focus group results support the findings of a quantitative national poll conducted by Hart Research Associates in January 2013, which found just 23 percent of respondents reported they had heard a lot (6 percent) or some (17 percent) about synthetic biology. The focus group discussions also reinforce earlier findings that specific applications impact people's hopes and anxieties around synthetic biology. For example, medical applications including disease cures gained the most support in the focus groups, while the biological production of chemicals and food additives received little to no support. Participants focused their concern on unforeseen, unintended consequences that might occur from synthetic biology. There was a clear and strong desire to study and monitor the potential risks of synthetic biology, which may require a variety of organizations. For the first time, the focus groups also sought opinions on neural engineering -- an area of science that uses engineering and brain science to build devices to support brain control of prosthetic or robotic devices in … Continue reading

Stanford ChEM-H: Chemistry, Engineering & Medicine for Human Health

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2014

By Amy Adams Chaitan Khosla directs Stanford ChEM-H, which encourages interdisciplinary research among the schools of Medicine, Engineering and Humanities & Sciences. Last summer Stanford launched the Institute for Chemical Biology as a joint venture of the schools of Medicine, Engineering and Humanities & Sciences with the goal of encouraging interdisciplinary research and training at a new frontier of chemistry, that of human health. Given a year to mature, the institute is relaunching under a new name that better reflects this vision: Stanford ChEM-H. Stanford Report spoke with the institute's director, Chaitan Khosla (the Wells H. Rauser and Harold M. Petiprin Professor in the School of Engineering and professor of chemistry), about the new name, his goals for the ChEM-H and the challenge of bridging the worlds of chemistry and biology. ChEM-H is an unusual term. What does it represent? The term ChEM-H has two meanings. In one, it is shorthand for an emerging interdisciplinary area of chemistry that this institute will support; that is, using the principles and tools of chemistry to better understand and advance human health. It is also an acronym for the fields that will need to come together for us to be successful (chemistry, engineering … Continue reading

TaxiClear turns biology into art with transparent creatures

Posted: Published on May 14th, 2014

A new chemical formula called Visikol makes lab creatures look other worldly. TaxiClear Biology specimens can be so beautiful they deserve to be shown as works of art with this TaxiClear Kickstarter project. Using the new chemical clearing formula -- Visikol -- TaxiClear gives mice, rats, lizards and other typical lab animals new lives as spectacularly stunning conversation pieces. "We have been selling our newly invented chemical clearing formula called Visikol for over a year to mostly researchers at universities," Johnson told Crave. "In doing this we realized that there was a lot of interest in not only our chemical formula for research but the beautiful specimens that we could make with this chemical." Thanks to this interest in Visikol, Johnson and his team launched the TaxiClear project to bring these specimens to the masses with their Kickstarter campaign, which include perks to buy light, dark and double stained mice, rats, fetal pigs and anole lizards. Funding for the project will enable Johnson and his TaxiClear team to make more amazing specimens in larger quantities. "We had originally been just a chemical company, but now are excited to start selling these specimens to hobbyists, educators and anyone interested in art … Continue reading
