Blind sisters gain new vision from biology professor – KIII TV3

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2017

Teacher helps blind sisters 'see' science Marvin Hurst, KENS 9:41 AM. CST February 22, 2017 SAN ANTONIO - Graciously seeking acceptance as normal college students is a box Katy and Olivia Shaw are trying to check. Yet, their navigation in the classroom and through everyday life yields the inquiry they've heard a million times: 'How does it feel to be blind?' "We do everything we can when it comes to living everyday life," Olivia said. The 19-year-olds said being visually impaired is the only normality they've known. They are both living with a disease affecting their vision called retinopathy. The sisters were diagnosed after being born prematurely. Katy is blind in her right eye and the teenager has some vision in her left eye which makes reading large print possible. Seeing is more challenging for Olivia. She has some light perception and some colors are visible to her. However, this hasn't stopped the Shaw sisters from doing chores at home, cooking and even earning academic fortitude. Katy has a 3.9 grade point average and Olivia has a 4.0. The sisters are both dual credit students at Northwest Vista College. "Definitely having this impairment has made it somewhat challenging," Katy said. … Continue reading

Quantum Biology Wandering where the edge is – Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies

Posted: Published on February 22nd, 2017

I have had thoughts about quantum mechanics and biology for many years - ever since my thermodynamics class in chemistry as an undergrad. I discussed and developed them over the years. When I thought it was ready, decades ago, I wrote to Linus Pauling about my speculation that the most important differentiator for life is that from the molecular scale to the organization of organs, chaos (in the mathematical chaos theory sense) is the organizing principle. This means that living organisms are all potentially sensitive to quantum events. He was kind enough to write back, and I think it intrigued him, but there was no experiment that I could conceive of to do in support. Some years later, I was talking to an older psychiatrist friend about this idea in the context of pondering the mystery of consciousness. He liked it, and called up his friend Arthur Young, insisting that I go spend a day with Arthur. I think that Arthur Young, who had made is fortune on patents on the helicopter, was rather disappointed in me at first, as I was unaware of who he was, or his thinking prior to our day at his house in Berkeley, chatting … Continue reading

Anthropologist discusses biology of love – The Daily Princetonian

Posted: Published on February 21st, 2017

People today are more likely to have sex earlier but wait longer to get married, biological anthropologist Dr. Helen Fisher said in a lecture on Feb. 20. Were very well built to fall in love, for pair bonding and real sorrow in relationships, explained Fisher. A member of the Center for Human Evolutionary Studies in Rutgers Universitys Department of Anthropology, as well as chief scientific advisor of Match.com,Fisher talked about the science behind lovewhy we are attracted to one person instead of another, and how evolution shaped the biological processes behind human love. She began her talk by saying that love is universal and that the phenomenon is comparable among people regardless of gender, age, or sexual orientation. Contrary to what womens magazines may say, Fisher said men are more romantic than women. They fall in love more often and more quickly and are two-and-a-half times more likely to kill themselves when a relationship ends. She explained that there were three basic brain systems that govern mating and reproduction: one for sex drive, one for romantic attraction, and the last for attachment. I think all three of these brain systems evolved for different reasons, Fisher said. The first gave our … Continue reading

Global Market for Synthetic Biology to Achieve Blistering CAGR, Led by Core Products, Reports BCC Research – Yahoo Finance

Posted: Published on February 21st, 2017

Wellesley, Mass, Feb. 21, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Continuing advances in enabling technologies such as DNA synthesis and sequencing, specialty media, genome editing and bioinformatics, as well as a need for more efficient microbial production processes, are driving growth in the synthetic-biology global market. BCC Research reveals in its new report that developments in these multidisciplinary fields promise to advance the synthetic-biology industry and create unique market opportunities. The synthetic-biology industry consists of three main sets of technologies and products: enabling, core and enabled. Enabling technologies and products drive the development of the synthetic-biology industry. Core products and technologiesstandardized DNA parts, synthetic genes and chassis organismsare the key tools by which cellular factories and systems produce enabled products. The global synthetic-biology market, which reached nearly $3.9 billion in 2016, should total $11.4 billion by 2021, growing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24.0% through 2021. Enabled products, the largest segment, should reach over $8.3 billion in 2021, up from $2.8 billion in 2016, demonstrating a five-year CAGR of 24.4%. Core products, which reached $311.5 million in 2016, should grow to $1.1 billion in 2021 at a five-year CAGR of 30.0%. Synthetic biology has established itself as an … Continue reading

High school students to launch biology research into space – ABC News

Posted: Published on February 20th, 2017

When the next Space-X rocket is launched on Saturday, the research of two Kentucky high school students will be on its way to outer space. The research, conducted by students Will Casto and Danielle Gibsonon with a biology professor, focuses on what effect microgravity will have on the smooth muscle cells in rat hearts. Microgravity has been a part of space research since the first International Space Station expeditions. Their community in the Appalachian Kentucky has a high rate of hypertension, or high blood pressure, which can be associated with heart problems. They hope this research will provide some new insights into what affects the conditions. "If we get a set of raw data, the end goal is to see what changes and what happens," Gibson said. "When they first approached me, I was hesitant" said Dr. Michael Fultz, their research mentor and a biology professor at Morehead State University. "But, Will and Danielle hit it off right away. They are go-getters and they are a pleasure to work with." Dr. Carol Christian, Director of The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics, a high school on the Morehead campus where the two study, stressed how proud they are … Continue reading

Machen MacDonald: Your biology of success – The Union of Grass Valley

Our life and work are akin to biology. Just as our body needs to take in oxygen, drink water, and ingest food to sustain life, our personal and professional lives are really no different. There are critical elements that are needed to sustain and enhance the quality of our life experience. Just as important is our bodys need to eliminate what is no longer useful, for if we dont, we become toxic which leads to systems failure and ultimately death. In life, we need to ingest, digest what we need, then eliminate what no longer serves us. Imagine yourself surrounded by a big bubble of white light of which only you can see. You will travel through the rest of your life in this bubble. Truth is, you have been traveling in it all along. With that being the case, you must gain clarity of what you want in that bubble you dont already have, what you want to keep in your bubble that already supports you, and what you want to take out of your bubble that no longer serves you or is hurting you. Consider this when thinking about what to keep and what to purge. Our beliefs … Continue reading
