Rotator Cuff Injury | The natural treatment for a torn …
Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014
Can ginger or turmeric be used to reduce rotator cuff inflammation? Reducing inflammation promotes healing. While I was recovering from a partial rotator cuff tearI wanted to reduce the inflammation in my injured shoulder, but I also wanted to avoid risky anti-inflammatory drugs. So I did some research and decided to try ginger and turmeric for inflammation. Ground turmeric comes from a root that looks similar to ginger. Its a great spice that can be used togetherwith ginger, which has anti-inflammatory properties of its own. Many people would have you believe that in order for turmeric to be effective, you have to take it in capsule form. Particularly people who are selling it in capsule form. This is how I take turmeric I drink half a teaspoon of turmeric in a small glass of apple juice or almond milk twice a day. Im not crazy about the stuff, but my plan was to fix my arm come hell or high water sohey-ho and bottoms up! Apparently some people add it to coffee, vegetable juice, or smoothies. I havent tried that yetbut no doubt I will. Given thata teaspoon of turmericis not considered a lot, I also sprinkle it in my … Continue reading

My Voice: Side effects of radiation treatment for head and …
Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014
Radiationtherapy(RT) is often used to treat head and neck cancer. It can be used as the only treatment, in combination with chemotherapy (chemoradiation therapy), or after surgery (adjuvant radiation therapy). The goal of radiation therapy is to kill cancercells. Because these cells divideand grow at a faster rate than normal cells they are more likely to be destroyed by radiation. In contrast although they may be damaged, healthycells generally recover. Unfortunately radiation treatment causes short and long term side effects. RT can be administered in several ways: 1. Organ preservation: Radiation is aimed at the tumor site (with or without chemotherapy) is used in an attempt to cure the disease without surgically removing the larynx. However, this is not always an option because of the size and location of the tumor and the recommendation is to proceed directly to surgery. 2. "Palliative treatment": Radiation (with or without chemotherapy) is given in an attempt to prolong life when the tumor is too large and/or inoperable and cure is highly unlikely. 3. Radiation after surgery:Radiation is given after surgery to destroy any local residual cancer cells that may spread to other organs such as the lung, liver, or brain. Types of radiation therapy If RT … Continue reading

Treatment Can Help People of All Ages Speak With Increased Fluency
Posted: Published on December 3rd, 2014
EARLY TREATMENTis available for children with speech disorders. Above, students in a speech therapy class share their questions about insects on a board in front of the classroom. LAKELAND | When in a smooth, sultry voice, Marilyn Monroe sang "Happy Birthday" to President Kennedy in 1962, it was certainly not apparent that a speech disorder had been part of her past. Similarly, as Bruce Willis delivered countless one-liners in five "Die Hard" movies through three decades, few fans knew that classmates had taunted Willis as a schoolboy due to the same disorder. Stuttering is a speech disorder that affects the normal flow of speech for nearly three million Americans. While stuttering does not discriminate based on age, it most often affects children developing language skills between the ages of 2 and 5. In Polk County, Child Find is a federally-funded center that provides screening and information about programs available within the community for children ages 3 to 5. The program can assist in placing children in appropriate education programs that may help treat their stuttering. Though there is no cure for stuttering, treatment can help people of all ages speak with increased fluency and reduced frequency of disrupted speech. Early … Continue reading

Impact of traumatic brain injury on longterm memory explored
Posted: Published on December 2nd, 2014
Date: December 1, 2014 Source: Kessler Foundation Summary: A new article provides insight into the variable impact of traumatic brain injury on long-term memory. Memory impairment affects 54% to 84% of individuals with TBI. While the variable impact of TBI on long-term memory has been recognized, the underlying cognitive mechanisms have not been detailed in this population. This variability in impairment among individuals with comparable injuries has been explained, in part, by the theory of cognitive reserve, i.e., higher intellectual enrichment confers a protective effect on long-term memory. To test the role of working memory in the protective effect of cognitive reserve on long-term memory, scientists evaluated 50 patients with moderate to severe TBI for working memory, long-term memory and cognitive reserve. Kessler Foundation researchers have authored a new article that provides insight into the variable impact of traumatic brain injury (TBI) on long-term memory. The article, "Working memory capacity links cognitive reserve with long-term memory in moderate to severe TBI: a translational approach," was epublished ahead of print on October 7 in the Journal of Neurology. The authors are Joshua Sandry, PhD, John DeLuca, PhD, and Nancy Chiaravalloti, PhD, of Kessler Foundation. Memory impairment affects 54% to 84% of … Continue reading

Imaging Studies Differentiate PTSD & Mild Brain Injury
Posted: Published on December 2nd, 2014
By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on December 2, 2014 New research suggests advanced brain imaging techniques can help to differentiate military veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from those with mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). Currently, it is difficult for clinicians to make a definitive diagnosis as symptoms for PTSD and MTBI are similar, and the conditions are unable to be detected by normal structural neuroimaging. Emerging technology using hybrid imaging with positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT) in the pituitary region of the brain suggests a new method to distinguish the two conditions. The findings also lend support to the theory that many veterans diagnosed with PTSD may actually have hormonal irregularities due to pituitary gland damage from blast injury. The new study was presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). MTBI involves damage to the brain from an external force, while PTSD is generally defined as a mental health condition that can develop after someone has experienced a traumatic event. Research has shown that up to 44 percent of returning veterans with MTBI and loss of consciousness also meet the criteria for PTSD. … Continue reading

Overview Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability in the United States, contributing to about 30% of all injury deaths.1 Every day, 138 people in the United States die from injuries that include TBI. Those who survive a TBI can face effects lasting a few days to disabilities which may last the rest of their lives. Effects of TBI can include impaired thinking or memory, movement, sensation (e.g., vision or hearing), or emotional functioning (e.g., personality changes, depression). These issues not only affect individuals but can have lasting effects on families and communities. A TBI is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. Not all blows or jolts to the head result in a TBI. The severity of a TBI may range from mild (i.e., a brief change in mental status or consciousness) to severe (i.e., an extended period of unconsciousness or memory loss after the injury). Most TBIs that occur each year are mild, commonly called concussions.2 Among TBI-related deaths in 20062010: Among non-fatal TBI-related injuries for 20062010: Go here to read the rest: CDC | Get the … Continue reading

Medal for baby brain injury treatment
Posted: Published on November 29th, 2014
Medal for baby brain injury treatment Decades of research into understanding the impact and mechanisms of mild hypothermia treatment to reduce brain injury in newborn babies was recognised with the award of the Royal Societys MacDiarmid Medal this week. University of Auckland Professor of Paediatrics and Physiology, Professor Alistair Jan Gunn was awarded the MacDiarmid Medal for his research into using brain cooling to prevent brain injury in babies who experience low oxygen at birth. The MacDiarmid Medal is for outstanding scientific research which demonstrates potential for human benefit. He developed cooling cap to treat babies with brain injury at birth, and led research into the best way the technique could be used for optimum outcomes. Professor Gunns mother, the late Professor Tania Gunn was herself an eminent paediatrician and neonatologist, specialising in the care of newborn babies. Together they carried out a pioneering randomised, safety study of head cooling for babies in New Zealand in the late nineties. His ongoing experimental studies provided the foundation for understanding how, when and for which babies, the cooling cap can successfully reduce brain damage. Professor Gunn has made a major contribution to perinatal physiology and neuroscience, says the MacDiarmid Medal selection panel. … Continue reading
