Atletico Madrid player suffers brain injury in friendly victory

Posted: Published on August 11th, 2014

The midfielder was left unconscious following a first-half collision with team-mate Cristian Ansaldi, who was challenging Wolfsburg's Ivica Olic for an aerial ball. Suarez required lengthy treatment on the pitch before being replaced by Tiago, with Atletico later confirming details of the injury. "Mario Suarez suffers a traumatic brain injury," they tweeted."He's regained consciousness. He's being taken to the hospital for tests." Raul Garcia had already headed Atletico in front by the time Suarez was stretchered from the field, and added his second nine minutes after the interval. A Mario Mandzukic penalty made it three before Naldo reduced the deficit, but further goals from Koke and Hector put Atleti out of sight. Diego Simeone's men started well andMandzukic tested goalkeeper Diego Benaglio inside the opening minute as the Liga champions looked to end a run ofthree matches without a goal. And it was not long before they were in front, with Garcia rising well to power home a header from Gabi's corner in the 13th minute. Kevin De Bruyne started to cause problems in the Atleti penalty area, but the visitors had an even bigger issue to deal with when Suarez was felled in the 21st minute. That injury cast … Continue reading

Recovery includes expensive care not covered by Medicaid Betty Buchanan, LNA, is pushing Myla Gott to do more each day to help in her recovery following a car accident in January 2009 that left her with a severe brain injury.Rich Beauchesne/rbeauchesne@seacoastonline.com NORTH HAMPTON Myla Gott continues to make monumental strides in her recovery from a traumatic brain injury, and the largest milestone came recently courtesy of her brand new motorcycle. No, it's not a real motorcycle. "Motorcycle" is the affectionate term Gott, 23, a resident of North Hampton, has given her new walker, which has allowed her to proudly walk independently for the first time since her 2009 car accident. The walker is even complete with a toy throttle Gott can use to blast the sound of a revving engine as she blows past her nurses and family, much to their delight. "It's awesome," said Jayne MacLean, an A&C Non-Emergency Medical Transportation company employee who has driven Gott to her treatments and medical appointments on and off for the last four years. "Her smile gives it back to you 100 percent." Gott suffered a diffuse axonal brain injury during a crash on Interstate 95 in Portsmouth five years ago. After … Continue reading

Former East Lancs soldier with Afghanistan brain injury jailed

Former East Lancs soldier with Afghanistan brain injury jailed 9:17am Friday 8th August 2014 in News By Wendy Barlow, Court reporter AN ex-soldier brain injured after being blown up in Afghanistan has been jailed for a catalogue of drunken violence, after he flouted a chance handed him by a judge. Ashley Clark, 23, a former member of the Duke of Lancaster's infantry, saw two friends die and suffered life-changing injuries as a teenager, when he and his comrades were the victims of a roadside bomb in August 2010. Burnley Crown Court heard how Clark, now a web designer, first began drinking to self-medicate after he was medically discharged from the Army and had found it very difficult to cope with civilian life. Clark had recently started to tackle his problems, but for Judge Andrew Woolman it was too late. The hearing was told how the defendant had had sentence deferred by the judge last December. Clark had lost his temper and racially abused a taxi driver, ranting and swearing and calling him a terrorist, in the early hours of July 25, last year. When police arrived, he struggled with them, bit a female officer on the arm and booted her … Continue reading

Guantanamo argument: Does USS Cole defendant have brain damage?

Posted: Published on August 6th, 2014

Defense and prosecution lawyers sparred Wednesday over whether the accused USS Cole bomber should get an MRI of his brain before his death-penalty trial. The request presented both a logistical and political challenge to the U.S. military. Congress forbids the transfer of Guantanamo detainees to U.S. soil even for medical emergency. Also, although the prison ordered a $1.65 million magnetic resonance imaging machine nearly two years ago, it never arrived. Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, 49, is accused of orchestrating al-Qaida's Oct. 12, 2000, suicide attack on the USS Cole warship off Yemen that killed 17 American sailors. U.S. agents waterboarded him and interrogated him with threats of a power drill and a handgun. For the defense, al-Nashiri attorney Rick Kammen argued that his side needed the scan to investigate for "organic brain damage," as potential mitigation evidence at the war crimes tribunal of the man whom a U.S. military medical panel has diagnosed as suffering post-traumatic stress disorder. In addition, a defense team torture expert, internist Dr. Sondra Crosby, testified in April that al-Nashiri was a victim of "physical, psychological and sexual torture." She recommended the military conduct the scan to evaluate PTSD-related memory loss and care for him properly. To … Continue reading

Solving how meth damages brain

Posted: Published on August 5th, 2014

Published: Monday, 8/4/2014 - Updated: 16 hours ago GUEST COMMENTARY BY LAURA HALPIN SPECIAL TO THE BLADE This is one in a series of articles written by research students in The University of Toledo College of Medicines Biomedical graduate program exploring basic issues of human health. In 2012, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health reported that more than 12 million people in the United States have tried methamphetamine at least once. Even that single exposure to the drug can be incredibly addictive because of the intense feelings of well-being it produces short-term; however, the drug has other consequences including impaired decision making, decreased need for sleep, hallucinations, and increased anxiety, aggression and violent behavior. Not only does methamphetamine alter brain and behavior, but it also can significantly increase heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature. These systemic effects of the drug contribute to the significant increase in emergency room visits resulting from drug exposure. In fact, the number of emergency room visits as a result of methamphetamine exposure has increased to more than 100,000 per year, as reported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. In addition to the dangerous short-term effects, methamphetamine is especially harmful … Continue reading

Doctor will discuss care, treatment of concussions

Posted: Published on August 4th, 2014

By ANDREW MARTINS Staff Writer FREEHOLD It can happen without warning. One instant, an athlete is playing his hardest, and the next moment, an injury leaves him laying on the field and disoriented. His vision becomes blurry, a sensation of nausea washes over him, and a pounding headache attacks his senses just some of the signs of a possible concussion. If left untreated, a concussion can cause lasting health issues or death and con- cussions happen to thousands of Americans every year. It can be catastrophic if the proper decisions are not made, and it is really important for parents and coaches to be educated on the signs and symptoms of concussions, said Dr. David Bertone, who operates ConcussionRXCare in Manalapan and Lincroft. Bertone and Jersey Shore University Medical Center Sports Medicine Director Dr. Stephen G. Rice will discuss head injuries and their occurrence in youth sports at iPlay America, 110 Schanck Road, Freehold Township, on Aug. 13. A lot of the youth sports leagues are not really being serviced like the high school and college [sports] are, and [youth sports] is where a lot of the injuries are occurring, Bertone said. We have been trying to educate the community … Continue reading

Defense cites possible brain injuries in Pa. death

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2014

WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) - Brain injuries may have been a factor in the actions of a western Pennsylvania man charged in the stabbing death of his estranged girlfriend 2 years ago, his defense attorney said. Jordan Clemons, 25, is charged in Washington County in the death of Karissa Kunco, 21, whose body was found in a wooded area of Mount Pleasant Township in January 2012. Deputy public defender Brian Gorman said the defense has evidence of possible brain injuries or post-concussion syndrome that could have left his client with diminished mental capacity, The (Washington) Observer-Reporter (http://bit.ly/UQ6brw) reported. In hearing Thursday on his request for a neurological examination of his client, Gorman said Clemons was injured in a decade of playing football and in vehicle accidents and other incidents off the field. Gorman said Clemons played the positions of running back and defensive back leading to innumerable head collisions during practices and games, which caused dizziness, temporary confusion or loss of consciousness, black eyes and headaches. Any brain injury could be a factor in his ability to form criminal intent, Gorman said. Judge Katherine Emery granted Gormans request for a neurological evaluation as well as an evaluation by a specialist in … Continue reading

Vacuum treatment may limit damage after traumatic brain injury

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 31-Jul-2014 Contact: Connie Hughes Connie.Hughes@wolterskluwer.com 646-674-6348 Wolters Kluwer Health July 31, 2014 Controlled application of vacuum pressure is a promising approach to limiting tissue damage after traumatic brain injury (TBI), suggests an experimental study in the August issue of Neurosurgery, official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health. "Mechanical tissue resuscitation"consisting of vacuum pressure applied over the injured area of the brainshows promise as a safe and effective treatment for TBI, according to the research report by Dr. Louis C. Argenta and Dr. Michael Morykwas and co investigators of Wake Forest University of Health Sciences, Winston-Salem, N.C. However, the technique needs further development before it can be studied in humans with TBI. Could Vacuum Pressure Mitigate Damage after TBI? In the study, which was funded by a major grant from the U.S. Army, the researchers tested the mechanical tissue resuscitation approach by inducing localized TBI in swine, then applying negative pressurethat is, a mild vacuumover the injured area of the brain. The study evaluated the effects of different levels of pressure, 50 or 100 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg); different application times, … Continue reading

NCAA settles head-injury lawsuit

Posted: Published on August 1st, 2014

CHICAGO -- The NCAA agreed Tuesday to settle a class-action head-injury lawsuit by creating a $70 million fund to diagnose thousands of current and former college athletes to determine if they suffered brain trauma playing football, hockey, soccer and other contact sports. College sports' governing body also agreed to implement a single return-to-play policy spelling out how all teams must treat players who received head blows, according to a Tuesday filing in U.S. District Court in Chicago. Critics have accused the NCAA of giving too much discretion to hundreds of individual schools about when athletes can go back into games, putting them at risk. Unlike a proposed settlement in a similar lawsuit against the NFL, this deal stops short of setting aside money to pay players who suffered brain trauma. Instead, athletes can sue individually for damages, and the NCAA-funded tests to gauge the extent of neurological injuries could establish grounds for doing that. Ramogi Huma, president of the National College Players Association, told ESPN's Tom Farrey that the NCPA objects to the settlement because it includes no money for players who have been concussed, forcing them to sue their schools to pay for any treatment related to concussion symptoms. … Continue reading

TOOWOOMBA mother Coralie Graham hopes more research will be done into reverse stroke therapy in Australia after witnessing a remarkable improvement in her son. Joel Shepherd, 26, has undergone two perispinal Etanercept treatments in the past fortnight at a US medical institute in Los Angeles. Injections of a drug usually used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis have relieved the effects of a brain injury Mr Shepherd suffered as a three-year-old boy. "The fact that he can walk more independently, now with little help, is definitely the biggest improvement we've seen since the second treatment," Mrs Graham said. WHAT'S HOT ONLINE "His concentration and conversation has also improved." She said it was amazing to see Joel taking steps. "He hasn't been able to walk like this since he was a toddler, before the injury, 23 years ago." The result has made worthwhile the preparation, saving and community support to get Mr Shepherd to the Institute of Neurological Recovery. Mrs Graham said there was no reason to believe the results were not permanent. Here is the original post: Brain injury victim walks for first time in 23 years … Continue reading
