"I couldn't be prouder of the leadership of Congressman Pascrell," states Barbara Geiger-Parker, Chair of USBIA and President and CEO of the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey. Upper Southampton board places restrictions on proposed trauma facility

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2014

By Greg Vellner 21st Century Media News Service Officials said the township zoning board must impose six conditions if it grants any approval for construction of the two-story, 16,000-square-foot facility on the south side of Street Road, east of the Southampton Post Office. The center, on a 6.5-acre tract zoned Residential-2, also is to include five 4,200-square-foot single-story buildings to house a maximum total of 40 patients ages 18 and older. The township wants the conditions to be imposed by the zoning hearing board in the event that the zoning hearing board grants the special exception or approval of an unspecified use, states the motion approved unanimously by the supervisors. The plan, by Delaware Valley Residential Care of Chalfont, has raised the ire of some homeowners because, they said in public hearings, it will negatively affect real estate values and because patients potentially pose a threat to nearby residents. A public hearing on the plan continues March 19 before the zoning board. The conditions sought by township supervisors include: DVRC must establish property along the rear of the proposed center as open space in perpetuity; a fence 6 to 8 feet in height must be installed along the front, both … Continue reading

March is Brain Awareness Month. With summer sports just around the corner, I thought that it would be a very appropriate time to ask the doctors of High Mountain Brain and Spine to educate us on concussions. Drs. Feler and Miller spoke at the Eagle County Senior Expo this past year and educated the audience on brain and spinal issues. We are fortunate to have these amazing resources with our valley, considering the active outdoor lifestyles we live. Its not really a fashion statement, but it can absolutely add that final touch to an outfit as well as save your life. A helmet is one of the most important things you can put on before playing in the snow, on the river, in the dirt or climbing over rocks. While helmets may not always prevent serious head injury, they do a great job limiting the severity of injury to our most important body part our brain. Yet despite an increase in helmet use, doctors are seeing an increase in the number of concussions within their clinics, especially in active individuals and athletes. A concussion is a traumatic brain injury; its defined as an alteration of consciousness as a result of … Continue reading

Belvoir hospital, DVBIC partner to launch Brain Injury Awareness Month

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2014

Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, in partnership with the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, officially launched Brain Injury Awareness Month March 6 during an open house at the Intrepid Pavilion, reaffirming the ongoing commitment of both organizations to providing world-class TBI care to servicemembers. March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and the open house event highlighted several organizations and their efforts to prevent TBI as well as provide care to those servicemembers who have sustained a brain injury. Since 2000, more than 294,000 servicemembers have sustained a traumatic brain injury, with about 80 percent occurring in the at home environment, according to Col. Sidney Hinds, II, DVBIC national director. These numbers indicate the militarys role in supporting veterans, wounded warriors, and their Families, which becomes increasingly more important as the brain injury research advances. Clearly, we are not going to stop seeing traumatic brain injuries even in times of no war, said Navy Capt. Jennifer Vedral-Baron, Belvoir hospital director. So that means despite any operations tempo, we have a lot of work to do, and that work continues daily. Despite the increase in the numbers of TBI in both the military and the civilian population over the past decade, the … Continue reading

Brookhaven Retreat Supports National Brain Injury Awareness Month

Posted: Published on March 13th, 2014

Knoxville, TN (PRWEB) March 13, 2014 March is Brain Injury Awareness Month hosted by the Brain Injury Association of America. Brookhaven Retreat recognizes that emotional injuries to the brain can be just as damaging as physical injuries. This month, Brookhaven Retreat focuses on the various methods used to heal women who suffer from emotional brain injuries such as posttraumatic stress disorder. Posttraumatic Stress Disorder results from experiencing traumatic events. It is an anxiety disorder that may begin immediately after a trauma, but can even show up years later. PTSD prevents the body from healing itself from trauma, leaving long-term changes to the brain. According to research, women are at higher risk for developing PTSD. Nearly half of all women experience a traumatic event in their life including, sexual assault. Although PTSD can co-occur with other mental health issues such as borderline personality disorder, substance abuse and depression, it is important to differentiate them and avoid common misdiagnoses. Repeated or pro-longed trauma hinders the development of effective interpersonal skills, emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills. Women suffering from PTSD relive the trauma through night terrors and flashbacks. Women may try to avoid trigger events, isolating themselves, or turn to substance abuse … Continue reading
