Clowney's absence, defensive issues overshadow USC win over Kentucky Clowney's absence, defensive issues overshadow USC win over Kentucky Updated: Sunday, October 6 2013 11:19 AM EDT2013-10-06 15:19:59 GMT A Wedgefield couple has been charged with child abuse and failing to seek medical care after their 6-month-old daughter suffered a permanent brain injury last month, the Sumter County Sheriff's Office announced. Christopher McFadden Jr., 20, and Brittany Nicole Shapely, 18, were jailed Friday after an arrest warrant alleges they deliberately avoided medical treatment for the girl after being aware that the child was seriously injured, which caused a permanent brain injury, Sumter County Sheriff's Sgt. Tripp Mays said. The 6 month old was taken to the hospital Sept. 5 and a department of social services employee contacted authorities after hospital staff reported the child had cracked or broken ribs and the child's brain was swollen, according to the incident report. "While the cause of the injuries remains under investigation, staff at both hospitals said the injuries are consistent with suffocation and classified them as non-accidental,'" the incident report states. McFadden and Shapley are both in the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center on $150,000 bond. Copyright 2013 WIS. All rights reserved. Read the … Continue reading

Brain initiative a unique opportunity for San Diego

Posted: Published on October 4th, 2013

By Ralph J. Greenspan 4 p.m.Oct. 3, 2013 While it is no mystery to any of us why we need a brain, it remains a major mystery how the brain does what it does. As a result, when illness or injury disturbs the brains normal activities, we are hard pressed to treat the problem effectively. Those who have been affected either personally or through family and friends by conditions such as traumatic brain injury, autism, schizophrenia, depression, stroke or Alzheimers disease know all too well the tragedy and feeling of helplessness that comes with running up against the limitations of current treatment options. The human cost of these afflictions is staggering, and the economic cost enormous. A new national effort, the BRAIN Initiative (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies), and the center launched by UC San Diego in response, the Center for Brain Activity Mapping (CBAM), are aimed at making it possible to overcome technical barriers so that we can know more about how the brain works and thus how to treat its malfunctions. Why is this more feasible now than in the past? Thanks to research advances in neuroscience, physics, chemistry and engineering, many of which have come from … Continue reading

Featured Article Main Category: Neurology / Neuroscience Also Included In: Parkinson's Disease Article Date: 03 Oct 2013 - 0:00 PDT Current ratings for: Scientists move closer to 'grow-your-own' brain cell cultures 4 (2 votes) Scientists from the University of Western Ontario and the Lawson Health Research Institute have successfully grown large numbers of patients' own brain cells following a small biopsy. And not only are these cells "healthy," but also they demonstrate a number of powerful attributes to protect and preserve the brain from future injury, toxins and disease. Scientists from the Departments of Clinical Neurological Sciences, Oncology and Otolaryngology at the University of Western Ontario hope that ultimately these cells can be cultivated in a laboratory to yield specific cell types needed for a particular treatment. Dr. Matthew O. Hebb, one of the researchers on the study, explained: "It is our hope that the results of this study provide a footing for further advancement of personalized, cell-based treatments for currently incurable and devastating neurological disorders." These patient-specific cells may also be able to cross the "blood-brain barrier" by expressing specific therapeutic agents that are released directly into the brain. The "blood-brain barrier" restricts the passage of substances from the … Continue reading

Traumatic brain injury treatment center opens on Camp Lejeune

Posted: Published on October 3rd, 2013

CAMP LEJEUNEAn $11 million facility for treating traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress opened on Camp Lejeune Wednesday, and its been a long-awaited moment for Marines and sailors there. The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund funded the project, and they cut the ribbon on the satellite center at Lejeune. They are truly forging a path forward, in comprehensive and holistic care and research to benefit our service members [and] benefit their families, Brigadier Gen. Robert Castellvi, commanding general of all Marine Corps installations on the East Coast, said. And not just for now, but for the generations to come. The center will treat more than 1,000 service members like Lance Cpl. Kyle Jastren, who suffered a TBI last December. It destroyed my life, Jastren said. You know, divorce, work issues, problems with being able to do things that I love to do. You know, go out and go shooting, go out and go hiking, go mountain biking, go running with my dog. Its stories like Jastrens that made Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund chairman Arnold Fischer want to build the facilityand eight others like itin the first place. You need this at every major base, Fischer said. So that when [service members] … Continue reading

Ampio Pharmaceuticals subsidiary Luoxis Diagnostics announces positive summary data from study of traumatic brain …

Posted: Published on October 1st, 2013

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo., Oct. 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Luoxis Diagnostics (a subsidiary of Ampio Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NYSE MKT: AMPE), today announced results from a recently completed clinical study of patients with isolated traumatic brain injury (iTBI). This study demonstrated statistically significant correlations between oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and the severity of injury among iTBI patients. ORP is measured using the company's proprietary RedoxSYS diagnostic system, a point-of-care diagnostic system enabling rapid analysis of multiple markers of oxidative stress. (Logo:http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120516/MM09116LOGO) Increases in plasma static oxidation-reduction potential (spot measurement, sORP) levels were consistently shown to closely correlate with increases in iTBI severity as measured by the Abbreviated Injury Score (p=0.02). This prospective observational cohort study of 645 iTBI patients was conducted at two level-one trauma centers in the US over five years, and the analysis was completed in September of 2013. This is the second clinical study demonstrating the correlation between injury severity in iTBI and oxidation-reduction potential [Rael LT, Bar-Or R, Mains CW, Slone DS, Levy AS, Bar-Or D. Plasma oxidation-reduction potential and protein oxidation in traumatic brain injury. J Neurotrauma 2009;26:1203-1211]. Importantly, this is the first study to show that negative changes in sORP and cORP (a novel measure of patient antioxidant … Continue reading
