Researchers move closer to growing "therapeutic" brain cells in lab

Posted: Published on October 1st, 2013

Washington, Oct 01 (ANI): A new study has revealed that brain cells from a small biopsy can be used to grow large numbers of new personalized cells that are not only "healthy," but also possess powerful attributes to preserve and protect the brain from future injury, toxins and diseases. Researchers have moved closer to growing "therapeutic" brain cells in the laboratory that can be re-integrated back into patients' brains to treat a wide range of neurological conditions. Scientists are hopeful that ultimately these cells could be transformed in the laboratory to yield specific cell types needed for a particular treatment, or to cross the "blood-brain barrier" by expressing specific therapeutic agents that are released directly into the brain. Matthew O. Hebb, M.D., Ph.D., FRCSC, a researcher involved in the work from the Departments of Clinical Neurological Sciences (Neurosurgery), Oncology and Otolaryngology at the University of Western Ontario in Ontario, Canada said that they hope that the results of this study provide a footing for further advancement of personalized, cell-based treatments for currently incurable and devastating neurological disorders. Scientists enrolled patients with Parkinson's disease who were scheduled to have deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery, a commonly used procedure that involves placing … Continue reading

Brains grown from biopsies can be implanted back to cure disease (wellcome images/Flickr) Brain cells grown from small biopsies can be implanted back into a patient to treat a range of neurological conditions. Scientists from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, believe their method could be used to treat incurable diseases because the new tissue is able to cross the blood-brain barrier, which protects the brain by blocking foreign material from getting in but also renders many therapies ineffective. The research, published in the FASEB Journal, suggests that healthy lab-grown cells can help protect against injury, toxins and diseases. Researchers enrolled patients suffering from Parkinson's disease who were scheduled to have deep-brain stimulation surgery, which involves placing electrodes into the brain. Before the electrodes were implanted, the team took small biopsies from the surface of the brain and multiplied them in culture to generate millions of cells specific to the patient. Devastating disorders These cells were analysed and found to exhibit regeneration as well as characteristics of a fundamental class of brain cells that provide support and protection of neurons and the peripheral nervous system. The cells expressed a broad array of natural and potent protective agents, which the scientists … Continue reading

Child Emergency Room Visits for Brain Injuries Doubled in 10 Years

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2013

A new study shows the number of children who visited emergency rooms for sports-related brain injuries has nearly doubled in the last 10 years. The number of children visiting emergency rooms for sports-related traumatic brain injuries, such as concussions, has nearly doubled in the last 10 years, according to a new study from physicians at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Between 2002 and 2011, the number of children making trips to emergency rooms for brain injuries increased by 92 percent. During the same time, the number of those admitted to the hospital for further observation or treatment also increased by about 10 percent. [READ: NFL, Players Reach $765 Million Deal Concerning Brain Damage Accusations] Holly Hanson, an emergency medicine fellow at Cincinnati Children's, and two other physicians studied more than 3,800 children and teens who came to the center with such injuries. Their findings were published online in the journal Pediatrics on Monday. Hanson says the increase in emergency room visits for sports-related brain injuries may stem in part from a greater awareness of the dangers of traumatic brain injuries. "I suspect that community emergency department physicians, parents, coaches, trainers are doing a better job at identifying and seeking … Continue reading

Oviedo Chiropractor Earns Special Certification in Whiplash and Brain Injury Traumatology

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2013

OVIEDO, Fla., Sept. 29, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Oviedo chiropractor Dr. Eric Janowitz of Synergy Family Health recently earned certification in treating whiplash and brain injury trauma from the Spine Research Institute of San Diego. Dr. Janowitz completed several months of additional study and worked personally with whiplash treatment pioneer Dr. Art Croft during the certification process. Although Dr. Janowitz has already treated thousands of cases of whiplash, neck injuries, headaches, and back injuries, he states that this certification gives him more tools for helping patients. Specifically, he says he is better prepared to provide technical documentation needed for insurance, the courts and other healthcare providers. According to the Oviedo chiropractor, whiplash injuries are highly complex and can cause severe pain for years without correct treatment. Dr. Janowitz describes whiplash as a sudden injury that damages muscles, discs, ligaments, nerves and even the vertebrae themselvesall in a fraction of a second. He says prompt treatment is the key to avoiding years of unnecessary pain from whiplash and other car accident injuries. Dr. Janowitz explains he was driven to complete this extra certification by his desire to help his patients. "At least 3 million people suffer whiplash each year, but many … Continue reading

Brain injury awareness important for community

Posted: Published on September 29th, 2013

It can happen anytime, anywhere and without warning. A slip around the house, a miscalculation while driving or a medical emergency can cause a brain injury resulting in impairment of both mental and physical functioning that can range from mild to severe. The West Kootenay Brain Injury Association, a Castlegar based, non-profit dedicated to serving people in the Kootenay Boundary area, received a boost to its fund-raising and outreach efforts on Saturday, Sept. 28 when Sun Life Financial sponsored a barbecue at Kalawsky Chevrolet. "Some of our clients with brain injury don't have the ability to come out and volunteer or do things on their own without the support of a worker," said Kelly Johnson, executive director of the association. "So, it's so great when people from the community who are able-bodied are able to make partnerships with us and do something like this event on their own without even any help from us." Sun Life advisor Rauni Naud said she was happy to have arranged the barbecue, which unfortunately fell on a rather wet day in the Kootenays. Still, with delicious food and fun balloon creations donated from Doreen's Balloon Creations, the mood was cheery and bright under the … Continue reading

Gel May Offer Simple Treatment for Newborns With Low Blood Sugar

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2013

By Serena Gordon HealthDay Reporter THURSDAY, Sept. 26 (HealthDay News) -- An easy-to-use gel containing dextrose -- a form of sugar -- may be an effective way to treat low blood sugar levels in newborns, new research finds. Giving infants two doses of the gel nearly halved the odds of treatment failure for low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, compared to an inactive placebo, according to study author Jane Harding, at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, and colleagues. "Dextrose gel should be considered for first-line treatment to manage hypoglycemia in late preterm and term babies in the first 48 hours after birth," the researchers concluded in the study published online Sept. 25 in The Lancet. Low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) can be a serious problem in newborns. It's associated with brain injury and poor neurodevelopmental outcomes, according to study background information. Between 5 percent and 15 percent of newborns may have hypoglycemia. The incidence of hypoglycemia appears to be on the rise, the researchers noted. And, they suspect that the increase in maternal obesity and diabetes may be part of the reason. Dr. Deborah Campbell, director of the division of neonatology at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore in New … Continue reading
