American Legion Releases Report on TBI and PTSD

Posted: Published on September 13th, 2013

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The American Legion released a report on Sept. 11 that is the culmination of a study the wartime veterans organization did on current treatments and best practices for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The report, entitled The War Within, includes findings and recommendations based on comprehensive research, conducted from January 2011 to February 2013, by an American Legion ad hoc committee chaired by William Detweiler, past national commander of the Legion. Detweiler said the report shows that while the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) use a number of traditional medical treatments for TBI and PTSD cases, they have not done a lot of research on alternative methods. Theres no simple answer to what works as far as PTSD or TBI is concerned, but we found that the (DoD and VA) medical profession shied away from certain things which they considered to be alternative medicine. For example, Detweiler said that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is one alternative treatment that works for some people. Its not the answer for everybody, but (DoD and VA) have shied away from putting any serious money into doing studies. Key findings from the Legions … Continue reading

Winnipeg football player sues university after brain bleed

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2013

A football player from Winnipeg has launched a multi-million dollar lawsuit against a Quebec university after he sustained permanent brain damage during a game. Kevin Kwasny has filed a $7.5 million lawsuit against Bishops University, alleging he was forced to play despite having symptoms of a concussion during a 2011 game. Kwasny, who was 21 at the time, was playing a game for the Gaiters when he began vomiting and went unconscious in September 2011. At half-time he was rushed to hospital in critical condition, where he had emergency surgery to relieve bleeding on his brain. He was put in a medically-induced coma. Court documents say Kwasny took a blow to his head during the game, and he immediately told multiple members of the coaching staff about his injury. The documents allege Kwasny was ordered to play, despite having symptoms of a concussion. Shortly after returning to the field, he was hit again and suffered a major brain bleed, leaving him unconscious. Kwasny now has permanent brain damage and physical injuries. The documents say Kwasny will never be able to work again. Hes in treatment. Hes in hospital, said Greg Kwasny, Kevins father. He started walking about a year ago. … Continue reading

Role of autophagic and lysosomal pathways in ischemic brain injury

Posted: Published on September 10th, 2013

Public release date: 9-Sep-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Meng Zhao eic@nrren.org 86-138-049-98773 Neural Regeneration Research Previous studies by Shaohua Gu and team from Shanghai Pudong New Area Zhoupu Hospital showed that rapamycin-induced autophagy decreased the rate of apoptosis, but the rate of apoptosis was increased after the autophagy inhibitor, 3-methyladenine, was used, indicating autophagy may be involved in mediating neuronal death in cerebral ischemia. A recent study reported by Gu et al showed that autophagic and lysosomal activity is increased in ischemic neurons, and the activation of autophagic and lysosomal pathways can provide nutrition and energy for the survival of ischemic neurons, which was published in the Neural Regeneration Research (Vol. 8, No. 23, 2013). Researchers believe that abnormal components in cells can be eliminated through upregulating cell autophagy or inhibiting autophagy after ischemic brain injury, resulting in a dynamic balance of substances in cells. Moreover, drugs that interfere with autophagy may be potential therapies for the treatment of brain injury. ### Article: " The role of autophagic and lysosomal pathways in ischemic brain injury," by Zhaohua Gu1, Yinyi Sun2, Kangyong Liu1, 2, Fen Wang3, Ting Zhang2, Qiang Li2, Liwei Shen4, Ling Zhou4, Liang Dong1, Nan Shi1, … Continue reading

Transparent skull implant provides 'window to the brain'

Researchers from the University of California, Riverside, say they hope the implant will lead to new treatment strategies for those with life-threatening neurological disorders, such as traumatic brain injury and brain cancer. At present, the majority of neurological procedures involve craniectomies. A craniectomy is a neurosurgical procedure where a part of the skull is removed to give swelling in the brain room to expand. Laser-based treatments have shown promise for many brain disorders in the past, but most medical lasers are unable to penetrate through the skull. Therefore, the scientists hope this novel implant will take laser-based neurological treatments to the next level. The team created the implant using ceramic material that is currently used in dental crowns and hip implants, called yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). Although this material is … Continue reading
