INTRODUCTION More than 225,000 cardiac surgeries are performed annually in the United States (1). While these procedures provide life-saving corrections of coronary blood flow or valvular abnormalities, the inherent combination of surgical trauma, extracorporeal perfusion, and ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury often evoke harmful systemic inflammatory responses (2).
