Published: Saturday, 2/21/2015 - Updated: 39 seconds ago BY MARLENEHARRIS-TAYLOR BLADE STAFF WRITER Oregon residents will soon have a new medical facility that combines several services on one campus. Mercy Health system and its partner, the Toledo Clinic and Toledo Cardiology Consultants, will build a $9.7 million medical office building next to the Mercy Oregon Clinic, 3841 Navarre Ave. It provides a setting where folks can go to physicians office and under the same roof get rehabilitation services and imaging services. No one right now has them under one roof unless you go to one of the hospitals. It creates a one-stop shop for patients, said Jeff Dempsey, president and chief operating office at Mercy St. Charles Hospital. Mercy took over the Oregon Clinic last year and already owned the adjacent land to it, so it makes sense to build right there, Mr. Dempsey said. Mercy St. Charles rehabilitation services, now at 1001 Isaac Streets Dr., will move to the new two-story, 40,000-square-foot building. The Toledo Clinic also will move the small satellite office it operates in Oregon and assign a kidney doctor to the site, Mr. Dempsey said. Toledo Cardiology Consultants, which has operated a part-time office in Oregon … Continue reading

Among the many scientists who are presenting research at the event, the conference organizers chose 8 clinical researchers as finalists for the Outstanding Investigator Award. The following news briefs summarize their presentations of research in congenital heart disease (CHD). All presentations occur at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Gainey Ranch. Risk of White-Matter Injury Before Infant Cardiac Surgery Linked to Oxygen Flow in Brain Recent research in infants with critical CHD has shown that a longer period between birth and surgery increases the risk of injury to the brain's white matter, a condition called periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). This study of 35 neonates with critical CHD at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia analyzed cerebral physiology during the vulnerable preoperative period. Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only At Cardiology 2015 Conference, Experts in Congenital Heart Disease in Children and Adults Will Discuss Challenges in the Field Newswise Scottsdale, Ariz., Feb. 11, 2015 Many aspects of pediatric cardiology are relatively new to the discipline. Only recently have physicians been able to accurately diagnose and characterize the myriad congenital cardiovascular conditions that occur, and begin to apply successful strategies for care. This week, an international group of more than 800 medical experts gather at the nations largest pediatric cardiology conference to discuss challenges in treating congenital heart disease in the fetus, neonates, children and young adults. Affecting one in 120 children, congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect, which in the most severe forms is also the leading cause of death in infants and young children. While the origins of congenital heart disease remain a mystery, diagnostic capabilities continue to improve, and treatment and management strategies continue to evolve. However, many anomalies remain difficult to treat effectively, said Jack Rychik, M.D., the conference course director and medical director of the Fetal Heart Program and the Single Ventricle Survivorship Program at The Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. He added, as a … Continue reading
