New Research Indicate Risks of Taking Aspirin
Posted: Published on January 15th, 2015
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN)-- More than one in 10 patients in a new study are taking aspirin inappropriately, that's according to new research in the Journal of American College of Cardiology. The research shows Americans who are taking aspirin and at low risk to prevent a first time heart attack or stroke, should not do so. The research states that the long term effects do not outweigh the gains. "Those at low risk can be at risk of bleeding in your stomach, you can even have a stroke than can cause a certain kind of bleeding inside your brain," that's according to Ravi Dave, a Cardiologist from UCLA Medical Center. 68,000 patients were tested for this study in the Journal of American College of Cardiology. Each person's risk of developing heart disease was calculated by researchers from Baylor College of Medicine. The study didn't look at patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, since they benefit most from aspirin to prevent heart attacks. The overall goal of this study in the Journal of American College of Cardiology, was "to examine the frequency and practice-level variation in inappropriate aspirin use for primary prevention in a large U.S. nationwide registry." It is recommended … Continue reading

Ten percent of heart patients may be inappropriately prescribed aspirin
Posted: Published on January 13th, 2015
WASHINGTON (Jan. 12, 2015) -- More than 10 percent of patients treated with aspirin therapy for primary cardiovascular disease prevention were likely inappropriately prescribed medication, according to a new study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology that examined practice variations in aspirin therapy. Accessing data from the National Cardiovascular Disease Registry Practice Innovation and Clinical Excellence (PINNACLE) Registry, researchers examined a nationwide sample of 68,808 patients receiving aspirin for primary cardiovascular disease prevention. By evaluating aspirin guidelines by the American Heart Association, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force, and other organizations, researchers determined aspirin use to be inappropriate in patients with a 10 year cardiovascular disease risk of less than 6 percent. Researchers identified patients from 119 practices who were prescribed aspirin between January 2008 and June 2013, excluding patients receiving aspirin as a secondary prevention due to history of cardiovascular disease such as myocardial infarction, prior stroke, and atrial fibrillation. The study found nearly 12 percent of the patients receiving aspirin for primary prevention were receiving it inappropriately. The frequency of inappropriate aspirin use was higher among women, at nearly 17 percent compared to men at 5 percent. Patients inappropriately receiving aspirin were, on average, 16 … Continue reading

Posted: Published on January 13th, 2015
MARRERO, LA (PRWEB) January 13, 2015 West Jefferson Medical Center (WJMC) in New Orleans is the only hospital in Louisiana chosen by The American College of Cardiology (ACC) as part of a pioneering team approach to keep patients healthy and at home following admission for heart attack or heart failure. The 35 hospitals selected nationwide are the first participants in the ACC Patient Navigator Program, which is the first program of its kind in cardiology and supports national efforts to reduce unnecessary patient readmissions. West Jefferson is very pleased and excited to have been chosen for the ACC Patient Navigator program. Through this partnership, we look forward to enhancing our current processes and forging new ones that will allow us to improve the quality of care we deliver to our patients, said Monica Bologna, Vice President of Service Line Development at West Jefferson Medical Center. Nearly one in five Medicare patients hospitalized with heart attack and one in four Medicare patients hospitalized with heart failure are readmitted within 30 days of discharge, often for conditions seemingly unrelated to their original diagnosis.
