The New York Times Reveals Widespread Allegations Of Harassment Against Women At Yale Medical School
Posted: Published on November 4th, 2014
A New York Times article this weekend documents a disturbing case of sexual harassment at the Yale School of Medicine the university's medical school that has led to claims that Yale "is insensitive to instances of harassment against women." Former Yale School of Medicine head of cardiology Michael Simons "professed his love to a young Italian researcher at the school," giving her a handwritten love letter in "effortful Italian," The Times' Tamar Lewin writes. Additionally, Simons "sought to intervene in her relationship with a fellow cardiologist under his supervision" now her husband and allegedly impeded him professionally within the department. According to The Times, the researcher Annarita Di Lorenzo and her then-boyfriend Frank Giordano were forced to file formal complaints with Yale's University-Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct after they were unable to get help through the medical school. The committee found that Simons "had sexually harassed and created a hostile work environment" for Di Lorenzo and "had exercised improper leadership and compromised decision-making" towards Giordano, The Times reports. The committee then recommended that Simons be permanently removed from his position as head of cardiology a ban that Yale University provost Ben Polak reduced to 18 months. However, The Times reports, … Continue reading

Faculty describe mood of fear in cardiology department
Posted: Published on November 3rd, 2014
On the walls of the Yale School of Medicine hang the portraits of previous deans and acclaimed scholars. They have one thing in common all are male. Professor of immunobiology at the School of Medicine and chair of the Womens Faculty Forum Paula Kavathas said she thinks the portraits are telling: They reflect a school where men wield power. The allegations that have emerged about the mishandling of a sexual misconduct case involving Michael Simons, the former chief of the schools cardiology department, and researcher Annarita Di Lorenzo have spurred discussions about the working environment for women at the school. But members of the community disagree about whether the School of Medicine is a hostile work environment for women. Of 18 medical school faculty members interviewed, 11 expressed concerns about the environment, while seven said they felt the school was a completely safe place for women. Of nine faculty members in the cardiology department interviewed, five all physicians said their department was a hostile work environment in general, but especially for women. Researchers, however, defended the work environment under Simons. Five female physicians working in cardiovascular medicine some of whom said they experienced various forms of harassment at the hands … Continue reading

American College of Cardiology patient navigator program completes hospital selection
Posted: Published on October 29th, 2014
PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 28-Oct-2014 Contact: Nicole Napoli nnapoli@acc.org 202-375-6523 American College of Cardiology @ACCinTouch WASHINGTON (Oct. 28, 2014) The American College of Cardiology today announced 35 selected hospitals that are pioneering a team approach to keep patients healthy and at home following admission for heart attack or heart failure. The hospitals from across the country are the first participants in the ACC Patient Navigator Program, which is the first program of its kind in cardiology and supports national efforts to reduce unnecessary patient readmissions. "The Patient Navigator Program is a unique collaboration between the cardiovascular care team, patients and families to manage the stress of hospitalization for complex conditions in a way that allows patients to return home, remain healthy and avoid the need for readmission whenever possible," said ACC President Patrick T. O'Gara, M.D., FACC. "The program coincides with national initiatives to reduce readmission rates for patients with cardiovascular conditions. More importantly, it will directly benefit patients and their families." Nearly one in five Medicare patients hospitalized with heart attack and one in four Medicare patients hospitalized with heart failure are readmitted within 30 days of discharge, often for conditions seemingly unrelated to their original diagnosis. Readmissions can be … Continue reading

Custom Cardiology: A Virtual Heart for Every Patient
Posted: Published on October 29th, 2014
Illustration: James Archer; Hands: Getty Images A poet might say that each human beings heart is a unique mystery. Those of us working in the brand new field of computational medicine, however, can now model each of those unique hearts with marvelous accuracy and reveal their secrets. In my laboratory at Johns Hopkins University, my team creates computer models to simulate individual patients hearts, which can help cardiologists carry out life-saving treatments. Such models may soon transform medicine, ushering in a new kind of personalized health care with radically improved outcomes. Biomedical engineers have learned how to use numerical models to generate increasingly sophisticated virtual organs over the past decade, and rapid developments in cardiac simulation have made the virtual heart the most complete model of all. Its a complex replica, as it must mimic the hearts workings at the molecular scale, through the cellular scale, and up to the level of the whole organ, where muscle tissue expands and contracts with every heartbeat. Whats more, the modeling at these different scales must be tightly integrated to accurately render the constant feedback interactions that govern the functions of the heart. Such models have already proved their value for basic cardiac … Continue reading
