Nissen Urges Prompt Revision Of Cardiovascular Guidelines
Posted: Published on October 7th, 2014
Sparked by a new study that once again finds serious flaws in the cardiovascular risk calculator at the heart of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association cardiovascular guidelines, Steve Nissen states that the ACC and AHA should promptly revise the guidelines to address the criticisms offered by independent authorities. The CV risk calculator is a key component of the guidelines, since people are generally considered candidates for statins if they have a10-year estimated risk of CV disease of 7.5% or higher according to the equations used by the calculator. In a study published inJAMA Internal Medicine,Nancy Cook and Paul Ridker, analyzing data from the Womens Health Study, offer fresh evidence that the cardiovascular risk calculator used in the ACC/AHA cholesterol guideline is flawed. They found that the predicted rate of cardiovascular disease using the guideline calculator was significantly higher than the actual observed rate in the trial. They considered and ruled out several alternative explanations for the discrepancy, including underascertainment of events and the increased use of statins and revascularization procedures in their population. Noting that there have been at least seven studies now finding similar flaws in the CV risk calculator, they write that recalibration of the pooled data sets … Continue reading

An explanation of interventional cardiology
Posted: Published on October 5th, 2014
What is interventional cardiology? Interventional cardiology refers to various non-surgical procedures used to define and treat cardiovascular disease. Interventional cardiologists use thin flexible tubes to get inside the bodys blood vessels to diagnose problems and repair damaged vessels or heart structures. Does interventional cardiology work for all types of heart disease? Interventional cardiologists treat narrowed arteries and weakened heart valves, which are often caused by coronary artery disease where blood flow is restricted in the tubes that supply the heart muscle with blood and oxygen, by heart valve disease where valves dont regulate the flow of blood as they should to the heart chambers or by peripheral vascular disease where other arteries in the body become clogged, interrupting natural blood flow. Interventional cardiology cannot replace cardiac surgery in all cases but technological developments have greatly improved the ability to use non-surgical methods, which result in shortened hospital stays and faster recoveries for patients. How are these diseases determined? Cardiac catheterization is an interventional test that evaluates coronary arteries and heart valve function. A catheter (thin flexible tube) is threaded through a blood vessel into the heart or area being examined. With the catheter in place, the cardiologist can determine blood … Continue reading

Cardiology concerns for Bourke
Posted: Published on September 29th, 2014
Sept. 29, 2014, 2:46 p.m. A Bourke man says he is deeply concerned about the town not having a cardiologist, after the town's visiting heart specialist was suspended by the Western NSW Local Health District last week. A man in Bourke said he is deeply concerned about the town not having a cardiologist, after the town's visiting heart specialist was suspended by the Western NSW Local Health District last week. Dr Roger Chatoor, who was a visiting specialist at the Bourke Aboriginal Health Service for two days every month, was suspended from Dubbo Hospital following an investigation into his behaviour and clinical practises. One of his patients, Chris McGirr said Dr Chatoor was solidly booked every time he visited the small town and now Mr McGirr is worried about the Health Service finding a replacement. "People are concerned pretty much everywhere. If we can't get him who else are we going to get? Mr McGirr said. He said it took two-and-a-half years to find a cardiologist to come to the area before Dr Chatoor. "People's lives are in danger out this way. Say I had a heart failure and had to fly down to Dubbo, who's going to treat me? … Continue reading

Brazilian Congress of Cardiology focuses on reducing obesity and increasing exercise
Posted: Published on September 27th, 2014
PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 27-Sep-2014 Contact: ESC Press Office press@escardio.org 33-049-294-8627 European Society of Cardiology @escardio Brasilia, Brazil, 27 September 2014 - More than 4,000 extra wide seats were made to accommodate Brazil's increasing obese population during the World Cup this year. Obesity affects nearly 20 percent of the population in Brazil and is currently classified as a disability. This and other cardiovascular issues, such as the overuse of technology, will be the focus of the Brazilian Congress of Cardiology, a joint event with the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (BSC), 26-29 September. The event, held in Brasilia, will highlight new research and practices in cardiovascular care and will include those that underscore the importance of decreasing the rate of obesity and ensuring those with cardiovascular risks, such as hypertension, be educated about heart disease and healthier living. The Congress will also present new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. "Technology, evidence and deliberation for clinical decision is one important message that will be deeply debated at the conference, as will Brazilian and international guidelines, and what cardiologists must avoid in their clinical practice," said Professor Angelo A V de Paola, President of the Brasilian Society of … Continue reading
