Healthy lifestyle choices may dramatically reduce risk of heart attack in men
Posted: Published on September 22nd, 2014
PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 22-Sep-2014 Contact: Rachel Cagan rcagan@acc.org 202-375-6395 American College of Cardiology @ACCinTouch WASHINGTON (Sept. 22, 2014) Following a healthy lifestyle, including maintaining a healthy weight and diet, exercise, not smoking and moderating alcohol intake, could prevent four out of five coronary events in men, according to a new study publishing today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. While mortality from heart disease has declined in recent decades, with much of the reduction attributed to medical therapies, the authors said prevention through a healthy lifestyle avoids potential side effects of medication and is more cost effective for population-wide reductions in coronary heart disease. For the study, researchers examined a population of 20,721 healthy Swedish men aged 45-79 years of age and followed them for 11 years. Lifestyle choices were assessed through a questionnaire exploring diet, alcohol consumption, smoking status, level of physical activity and abdominal adiposity (belly fat). Men in the study with the lowest risk were non-smokers, walked or cycled for at least 40 minutes per day, exercised at least one hour per week, had a waist circumference below 95 centimeters, consumed moderate amounts of alcohol, and followed a healthy diet with a regular consumption … Continue reading

Cardiology Group Withdraws ‘Choosing Wisely’ Recommendation
Posted: Published on September 22nd, 2014
In the end it wasnt wisdom for the ages. The American College of Cardiologysaidtoday that it was withdrawing one of its five recommendations inthe Choosing Wisely campaign. In 2012 the ACC recommended that heart attack patients should have only their culprit artery unblocked. It said that patients and caregivers should question whether complete revascularization of all nonculprit lesions in heart attack patients should be performed. The original recommendation was based on non-randomized studies suggesting that treating all significantly blocked vessels in heart attack patients could be harmful. However, the ACC now states, over the last two years, new science has emerged showing potential improvements for some patients in their overall outcomes as a result of complete revascularization. Two recent randomized controlled trials have altered the field. The 2013PRAMItrial and last monthsCvLPRITtrial offered evidence that stenting all arteries with large blockages improved the outcome of heart attack patients. But the studies, the ACC states, left many openquestions about the exact timing of the procedures; whether certain patients benefit versus others; whether FFR might guide decisions; and the role of patient complexity and hemodynamic stability. Science is not static but rather constantly evolving, said ACC President Patrick T. OGara, in a press release. … Continue reading
