Cardiologist adds hours at FirstHealth offices in Laurinburg, Pembroke
Posted: Published on September 22nd, 2014
LAURINBURG Dr. William L. Harris, an interventional cardiologist board certified in cardiovascular diseases and a member of FirstHealth Cardiology Services, now offers office hours in Laurinburg and Pembroke. Harris, a Pembroke native, joined FirstHealth Cardiology Services following the completion of a fellowship in interventional cardiology at The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in June 2014. He performs diagnostic cardiac catheterizations at the Scotland Cardiovascular Center, a partnership between Scotland Memorial Hospital and FirstHealth of the Carolinas. Harris interest in cardiology is fueled by his mothers battle with coronary artery disease, a condition that eventually took her life. That greatly influenced my decision to become a physician, he said. Following that experience, I felt an obligation to treat patients with cardiovascular disease. My specialty allows me to take care of patients in multiple settings After earning his bachelors degree in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Harris received his medical degree from the UNC School of Medicine in 2006. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in 2009 and then spent a year with the Moore Regional Hospitalist Service before entering The Brody School of Medicine in … Continue reading

UVA Honored for Improving Heart Attack Care
Posted: Published on September 19th, 2014
Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 19, 2014 The University of Virginia Health System has earned a national award from the American College of Cardiology for enhancing care for heart attack patients. UVA is one of just 55 U.S. hospitals to receive the ACTION Registry-Get With The Guidelines Gold Performance Achievement Award. Hospitals receive the award for consistent compliance with performance measures from the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. The standards focus on improving care for patients with a certain type of serious heart attack called a ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). Close coordination between UVAs Emergency Department and Heart & Vascular Center is key to providing quality care for patients and earning this award. UVAs STEMI alert process speeds care for patients with this type of heart attack through an on-call STEMI team that can be brought together within 30 minutes. Over two consecutive years, UVA met performance standards for treating STEMIs at least 90 percent of the time, including: Opening the blocked coronary artery in STEMI patients within 90 minutes of first contact with a rescue squad or other emergency medical responders. Providing aspirin to STEMI patients within 24 hours … Continue reading

West Tennessee Heart and Vascular Center Earns Highest Award from American College of Cardiology
Posted: Published on September 17th, 2014
Jackson, TN (PRWEB) September 16, 2014 The West Tennessee Heart and Vascular Center at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital has achieved the highest award offered by the American College of Cardiology for high-risk heart attack patient treatment. The ACTION Registry-GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award was bestowed only to those hospitals that maintained a performance measure score of 90 percent or better in the treatment of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) patients for eight consecutive quarters, ending in the last quarter of 2013. West Tennessee Heart & Vascular Overall Performance Composite 99.3% STEMI Performance Composite 99.3% NSTEMI Performance Composite 99.3% Discharge Performance Composite 99.3% STEMI is the abbreviation for an ST-elevation myocardial infarction. A STEMI heart attack is recognized by a test called an electrocardiogram that records the electrical activity of your heart. NSTEMI is a shorthand term for non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction. These types of heart attacks are often abbreviated as NSTEMI. While they may not be as serious as the STEMI heart attack, they are still heart attacks and result in heart muscle death. This is the third major quality recognition West Tennessee Heart and Vascular Center has received this year. Earlier the hospital received national recognition for its echocardiography services, … Continue reading

Heart Groups Don’t Recommend Routine ECG Screening Of Young People
Posted: Published on September 16th, 2014
In a new scientific statement the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology do not recommend the routine initial use of ECGs to screen young people for underlying congenital or genetic heart disease. More aggressive screening for heart disease in young people is often advocated in response to pressure resulting from the rare but tragic cases of sudden death in young people. But a detailed examination of the evidence led the AHA/ACC group to conclude that routine initial ECG screening in healthy people 12-25 years old without positive findings on the history and physical examination has not been shown to save lives. The expert committeerecommends that healthcare providers screen young people using a 14-point checklist that contains information taken from the personal history, family history, and physical examination of young people aged 12 to 25. A positive finding on any of the 14 points means that further testing, including a 12-lead ECG, may be indicated. Although sudden death among young people is rare, it is always a tragedy, and the infrequency of these events in no way mitigates their importance or impact on families and the community. However, the media coverage of sudden cardiac arrests in athletes may … Continue reading
