First expert consensus on ventricular arrhythmias published
Posted: Published on August 30th, 2014
PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 30-Aug-2014 Contact: ESC Press Office press@escardio.org 34-670-521-210 European Society of Cardiology Barcelona, Spain Saturday 30 August 2014: The first expert consensus on ventricular arrhythmias is published today. The novel document compiles current evidence on the diagnosis and management of ventricular arrhythmias and was agreed by international experts from three continents. The "EHRA/HRS/APHRS Expert Consensus on Ventricular Arrhythmias" is published today on-line in EP Europace (1). It was written jointly by the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) and the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS). Professor Christian Torp-Pedersen (Denmark), EHRA co-chairperson of the writing group, said: "This is the first document to provide guidelines on the management of all ventricular arrhythmias. The recommendations are particularly strong because they have been agreed by experts from three societies in Europe, the US and Asia. This avoids discrepancies and the unnecessary uncertainty that can arise from having different documents." He added: "Cardiologists depend on guidelines particularly when the evidence is weak and this is the case for ventricular arrhythmias. Most of our recommendations rely on consensus from international experts because there is a relatively small amount of evidence available. … Continue reading

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 29-Aug-2014 Contact: ESC Press Office press@escardio.org 34-670-521-210 European Society of Cardiology Barcelona, Spain Saturday 30 August 2014: A new ESC journal on cardiovascular pharmacotherapy is launched today at ESC Congress by the ESC and Oxford University Press. European Heart Journal Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy officially starts publishing in 2015. A special launch issue has been produced for ESC Congress 2014 with editorials and a call for papers. The journal's website goes live in September. Editor in chief Professor Stefan Agewall said: "We aim to become the number one journal in the field of clinical cardiovascular pharmacology within a couple of years. The strength of this journal is being part of the ESC journal family with the EHJ as the mother journal. Currently there is no daughter journal covering clinical pharmacology and there is a need for one. Neither are there similar daughter journals from Circulation or JACC." He added: "The EHJ rejects 9 out of 10 papers right now and this proportion is likely to increase in the future. Many of these are good papers in clinical pharmacology and could be sent to our new journal using the transfer system which is already in place in the family." Professor … Continue reading

Martha Jefferson Healthwise: Cardiology Team Wins Platinum
Posted: Published on August 28th, 2014
ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va.--The cardiology team at Martha Jefferson Hospital is enjoying better than gold-standard recognition for its work in taking care of heart patients in and around the community. After years and years of streamlining and fine-tuning, the cardiology team at Martha Jefferson has been given the platinum award, which is the highest award possible from the American College of Cardiology. The Martha Jefferson Cardiology Department joins about 225 other hospitals across the country in achieving platinum status. The award is based on a national database that benchmarks quality in cardiac care and starts from the time a heart attack victim becomes a patient, on through the patient's progress during their stay and beyond to their release home. Medical director of the hospital's cardiac catheter lab tells Newsplex the keys to snagging the top award were taking a total team approach and building a culture that is truly patient-centered. "It's no longer about my area or your area. It's about taking care of the patient and doing what's best for the patient, said Dr. Joshua Fischer. Once you have that and once you have that mindset, once you have that team approach of everybody coming together to work toward that … Continue reading

Heart Doctor Pay Drops To $558K As Interventions Scrutinized
Posted: Published on August 22nd, 2014
The nations cardiologists are still earning more than a half million dollars a year, but their income took a hit last year as trends in medicine and insurance payment curb the number of heart procedures needed and performed. Cardiology income dropped in 2013 for the first time in five years, with median compensation for full-time interventional cardiologists at $558,824 nationally, according to MedAxiom, a Neptune, Fla-based firm that works with and helps manage cardiovascular practices and programs across the country. Data for MedAxioms 2014 Provider Compensation & Productivity Report is based on data submitted last year by more than 130 cardiology programs representing more than 2,500 cardiologists. Increasingly, doctors are being asked to take care of patients before they get sick and compensation is beginning to reflect that. Private health plans, employers, government health programs like Medicare and insurers under the Affordable Care Act are moving away from fee-for-service payment to providers that critics say can lead to overuse and unnecessary treatments and procedures like invasive cardiology. A lot of the guidelines are more evidenced-based and show that a lot of testing done in the past doesnt provide value, Sauer said in an interview with Forbes. Anything we do to … Continue reading

Bill Young VA Medical Center cardiology clinic speeds access to care
Posted: Published on August 19th, 2014
SEMINOLE, Fla. (MCT) With frequent media reports of long wait times at veterans hospitals, Melville "Mac" Gibbons didn't know what to expect when he called the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center and asked to see a cardiologist. The answer the Navy veteran got surprised him: Come on down. Now. The hospital, the fourth-busiest in the Department of Veterans Affairs system, recently launched a new Convenient Cardiology Consult Clinic, or the C-4 Clinic, that allows new cardiology patients to be seen by a heart specialist the same day they are referred by other physicians at the hospital. Such patients had waited an average of 42 days previously, Young VA leaders said. In the C-4 Clinic, hospital officials said, the average wait is about three hours. The clinic offers what the VA calls a "one-stop shopping" experience. Previously, cardiology patients might have seen their primary care doctor on one day, gotten a cardiac test on a second and visited a cardiologist on a third. The C-4 Clinic allows veterans to boil that down to one day, the VA said. Amid reports of long wait times across the VA system, the Young VA touts the program as one of the ways the … Continue reading
