New Cardiology Clinic Set to Open

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2014

GRANTS PASS, Ore. Providence is expanding services to Josephine County for the first time. Patients will no longer have to commute to Medford to see a cardiologist. This May, a new cardiology clinic will open in Grants Pass on Northwest Hawthorne Street. Basic services for heart health will be offered, and some patients may still need to have tests done in Medford. The clinic will be open one day a week at first, and will offer appointments with all of Providences cardiology team. Providence cardiologist Dr. Manish Mehta said he regularly sees patients from Grants Pass and the new office could allow patients to get in much sooner. So we feel, why not go to Grants Pass and provide that service so that it would reduce the wait time, the patients would prefer it and hopefully we can help the community there, said Dr. Mehta. The hours and open date of the new clinic are expected to be announced later this month. See the article here: New Cardiology Clinic Set to Open … Continue reading

The data were released Wednesday by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The database allows users to search by provider name, specialty and location. It shows the types and number of procedures performed and the amounts paid. Payments totaled $77 billion. A search of "cardiology" shows Dr. Asad U. Qamar, head of the Institute of Cardiovascular Excellence, as the nation's top biller for the specialty, with billings of more than $18 million in 2012. The next highest cardiologist was a Davenport, Fla., doctor with $4.5 million. Qamar was the fifth highest biller of all categories in Florida, behind one ophthalmologist and three laboratories. He was the second highest non-laboratory biller overall nationwide, behind a West Palm Beach ophthalmologist who billed for nearly $21 million, according to the Associated Press. Qamar is president of the institute, known as ICE for short, whose main office is at 4730 SW 49th Road, Ocala. His medical practice also includes the Institute of Medical Excellence and the … Continue reading

Evidence rapidly building on utility of ultrasound in areas other than cardiology

Posted: Published on January 24th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 23-Jan-2014 Contact: Bret P. Nelson bret.nelson@mssm.edu 212-241-6794 World Heart Federation A paper in this month's edition of Global Heart (the journal of the World Heart Federation) says there is mounting evidence regarding the utility of ultrasound in areas outside its traditional field of cardiology, with increasing use reported in general hospital wards, clinics, and even pre-hospital environments. The paper is by Associate Professor Bret Nelson and Dr Amy Sanghvi of Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, USA. "The pervasive use of focused ultrasound is perhaps most evident in the advent of ultrasound training in undergraduate medical curricula," say the authors. They refer to a 2011 review paper that highlighted the growing use of point-of-care ultrasound by clinicians in over 20 specialties. "Increased training by clinicians across many specialties, coupled with technology improvements yielding lower cost and better quality studies, have contributed to this trend," they add. In emergency medicine, as well as yielding more rapid and accurate diagnoses in most cases compared with physical examinations alone, the authors say that the prognostic value of emergency physician-performed cardiac ultrasound has been demonstrated. Several studies have shown that no cardiac arrest patients without cardiac activity evident on ultrasound … Continue reading
