This can occur during fetal development, birth, post-birth or during the first few years of life. Resource4thePeople spokesman William Howell said today's announcement comes in response to a significant increase in the number of inquiries about the claim process from families who have had infants born with cerebral palsy and other birth problems. Parents guilty of starving teen daughter

Posted: Published on May 10th, 2013

A Harrison Twp. mother was sentenced to probation and the father pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of endangering children after their 13-year-old daughter with cerebral palsy was found to weigh 57 pounds. Susanne Casavant, 48, was sentenced to community control sanctions for five years, court costs, a fine and treatment after pleading guilty to two counts of child endangering. The girls father, William Nath, 38, pleaded guilty in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court to the same counts. Nath will be sentenced May 23. Officials said the girl is in the care of Children Services and is reportedly doing well. The case evokes comparison to that of Makayla Norman, who had celebral palsy and died weighing just 28 pounds on March 1, 2011. Five people, including Normans mother and nurse, were convicted of crimes related to Normans death. Judge Steven Dankof told Casavant that she was not to have any contact with her daughter. Dankof also said that if she violated the terms of her probation, she could face up to 11 years in prison. A Montgomery County Sheriffs Office report from Aug. 15, 2012 shows that a deputy made contact with a Dayton Childrens Hospital social worker, who said a … Continue reading

Fundraising plea for cerebal palsy op

Posted: Published on May 8th, 2013

THE family of a Woking boy with cerebral palsy are hoping to raise 50,000 to fund an operation in America. Three-year-old Jack Ostler was born eight weeks early at St Peters Hospital in Chertsey, which caused him to suffer oxygen starvation and as a result he has cerebral palsy. His parents, Sarah and Simon Ostler, of Turnoak Avenue, have already raised more than 10,000 but have a lot more fundraising to do if Jack is to have an operation in the United States. The youngster has difficulty using his arms, hands and legs and his condition means he finds talking difficult and he will not be able to walk, use his hands normally or sit up without help. Mrs Ostler said: Jacks life is very much centred around therapy. Every day he has therapy in some form. Hes not like any other three-year-old who is running round the park or playing with toys. Simon and I are his arms and legs. She said, however, Jack is a happy and smiley little boy and goes to the White Lodge Centre in Chertsey and The Dame Vera Lynn Trust School for Parents in West Sussex. An operation, known as selective dorsal rhizotomy, … Continue reading

Willoughby-Cleveland Elks Lodge using Internet to increase fundraising

Posted: Published on May 7th, 2013

By News-Herald staff Editor@News-Herald.com @newsheraldinoh A local organization is turning to the Internet to help beef up their Spring Up Ohio fundraising efforts for two charities. For years, the Willoughby-Cleveland Elks Lodge No. 18 has put on a golf outing to raise money for cerebral palsy research. This year the Elks have launched two online raffles one to benefit continuing CP research and the other to help St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital. Spring Up Ohio Chair Ray Hrics said the Elks turned to the online venue to broaden the fundraising base. Results of the online venture have been slower than expected, but the Elks are still hopeful. The raffle raising money for St. Jude is a cash raffle, with a 60-40 split. The hospital, based in Tennessee, has a mission of finding cures for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Families with children receiving treatment at St. Jude do not pay for medical care. The cost for a single child in the intensive care unit at St. Jude is $10,000 for two days. Apples For Cerebral Palsy is an iPad(s) raffle that will distribute the money raised to three centers who treat patients with CP, an incurable neurological disease. … Continue reading

View and purchase photos The number of children impacted by this debilitating condition rivals cerebral palsy one to four of every 1,000 children born in the United States. However, unlike cerebral palsy, NBPP is largely unknown. This anonymity results in a dearth of research as well as treatment options for children who are afflicted. We believe the affiliation between Spring Arbor University and the University of Michigan Health System program would not only result in much-needed research to address this debilitating condition, but will also develop the ways and means to improve the quality of life of these patients through new solutions for the management of treatment for NBPP, said Dr. Charles Webb, Spring … Continue reading
