Police looking for thief who stole a walker from a 15-year-old with cerebral palsy Matthew Martinez, Star-Telegram and Todd Unger, WFAA 9:56 AM. CDT July 10, 2017 David Burgos. Courtesy Burgos family FORT WORTH, TEXAS - David Burgos modified walker, with swiveling wheels, a fold-down seat, and a sewn-on Texas Rangers cushion, was his only means of getting around. But to the thief who stole it from his familys North Side porch, it was just a little more scrap metal. Now police are looking for the man who was captured on the Burgos familys home surveillance video taking the walker from the porch early Thursday morning. The same man was captured on video the same night stealing a flag pole from Burgos grandparents, who live four houses down on Belmont Avenue. Thankfully for David, who has cerebral palsy, friends and family have stepped up and donated both a walker for him to use temporarily, along with more than $3,000 to replace one of lifes necessities for the young man on the go. David is just so thankful, we all are, said Nina Burgos, Davids mother. David is so happy he will soon have another walker. Read more from our media … Continue reading

CANFIELD, Ohio - A group of Harley Davidson riders didn't let anything, including Monday's rain, get in the way of trying to bring smiles to the faces of a local family. Friends and loved ones of Donald Nitzsky, who passed away last week from cerebral palsy, gathered to say their goodbyes. "He had a life expectancy of three and he lived to 32," said Donald Nitzsky's sister Olivia Aikins. Motorcycles and bright colors are what brought smiles like this one to the face of 32 year-old Donald Nitzsky. "Certain colors and motorcycles kind of seemed to be his thing. He always smiled when he seen one. We actually had a big poster above his bed that he had that he to look at. It was bright orange and it had black in it and lights. He always smiled when he seen them," said Donald Nitzsky's sister Olivia Aikins. "He spent most of his life in a wheel chair, all of his life and he loved motorcycles, two wheels, hot rods, you name it. If it had wheels on it, he loved it," said Donald's cousin James Jones. When Donald passed away last week of cerebral palsy, a motor disability that … Continue reading

NORTH TONAWANDA Mike Brown started playing table tennis at the age of 13. Today, the Rochester native is among the best competitive players in the world, having been selected to participate in the Parapan American Games. But he's not just another athlete. Brown, now 56, has cerebral palsy. While the disability has impaired his lower body, he's still got full mobility in his upper body and he's used his talents to earnseveral medals at different competitive levels.Though he uses a cane to get from place to place, he stands at the table and even though he doesn't move much, it's rare that the ball gets past him. "I don't let it stop me from doing nothing," he said. "Nothing." On Thursday afternoon, Brown made a stop at the Forest View Senior Village in North Tonawanda to give a table tennis demonstration to some of the residents. He came at the request of employee MaryBeth McClaren, who has known Brown since 2000, when he helped coach her son in the sport of table tennis. Brown got his start playing locally in the Rochester area, specifically with the Genesee Valley Table Tennis Club, where he's the only handicapped player. He eventually found … Continue reading

Local man with cerebral palsy says Walmart let him go because of his illness. (WKEF/WRGT) MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) -- After 22 years working at the same place it's easy to slow down, but not George Grubb. He's the face at Walmart, and the man you come to see. Well, I'm not bragging on myself, Grubb joked, With my smiling face, thank God my friendly attitude, they are just used to seeing me upfront. For two decades, and countless introductions, George's work as the Walmart greeter became the mainstay at the Miami Township location. You know I tell them to have a good day or a good evening, Grubb said, Well I've just enjoyed working at Walmart until this happened you know. Last Thursday Good day became Goodbye. Grubb battles cerebral palsy, and it forces him to work from a wheel chair. It saps his strength, but not his spirit. Grubb said he was taking it day by day, until he said Walmart moved him from greeting customers to scanning products. You know I told them I couldn't do it because of my hands, but I had done my best, Grubb said. He said the store wants employees to work … Continue reading

Delhi kid with cerebral palsy inspires Iron Man-like suit for disabled – Hindustan Times

A Delhi child with cerebral palsy inspired the development of the first commercial exoskeleton for children with disabilities by two young Indo-Canadian engineers. Manmeet Maggu and Rahul Udasi, both 26, who first met as students of mechatronics engineering at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, have set up the fledgling start-up, Trexo Robotics, to roll out the exoskeleton. Maggu, born in Chandigarh, was influenced by the film Iron Man, and robotics was a natural pull. Initially, he looked at building an upper body exoskeleton as a side project during his years as an undergraduate. However, his project turned personal after his Delhi-based brother Upinders son Praneit was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, a disease that greatly impairs motor function. I found out my nephew has cerebral palsy and he might never be able to walk. That really pushed us to consider our purpose as mechatronics engineers. And it became the motivation for us to build something for my nephew, Maggu told Hindustan Times. Maggu and Udasi bonded and roomed together and subsequently moved to Toronto, where Maggu completed an MBA at the University of Torontos Rotman School of Management while Udasi finished a Masters in Robotics. Now, with an office located … Continue reading
