Latest Articles What would you name a new element on the periodic table? Scientists will soon have to decide. New York Times readers had some suggestions. By NICHOLAS ST. FLEUR Element 113 is credited to scientists from the Riken institute in Japan, who will bestow an official name more than 12 years after they began their efforts. By NICHOLAS ST. FLEUR Researchers said they have developed a technique for creating a substance they are calling Q-carbon, which could have uses in medicine and industry. By JONAH BROMWICH For decades, aspiring bomb makers including ISIS have desperately tried to get their hands on a lethal substance called red mercury. Theres a reason that they never have. By C. J. CHIVERS Dr. Heck shared the 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for creating techniques to synthesize complex carbon molecules that are now used to make drugs, electronics and other products. By NICHOLAS ST. FLEUR Aziz Sancar of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recalls how news of his Nobel Prize in Chemistry was broken to him and says he is honored to share the award with his colleague. What Is Chemistry? – Definition

Posted: Published on October 28th, 2015

Chemistry often involves colorful chemicals and cool glassware, but there are calculations and theory in addition to labwork. Arne Pastoor, Getty Images By Anne Marie Helmenstine, Ph.D. Question: What Is Chemistry? Answer: If you look 'chemistry' up in Webster's Dictionary, you'll see: "chemistry n., pl. -tries. 1. the science that systematically studies the composition, properties, and activity of organic and inorganic substances and various elementary forms of matter. 2. chemical properties, reactions, phenomena, etc.: the chemistry of carbon. 3. a. sympathetic understanding; rapport. b. sexual attraction. 4. the constituent elements of something; the chemistry of love. [1560-1600; earlier chymistry]." My glossary definition is short and sweet: Chemistry is the "scientific study of matter, its properties, and interactions with other matter and with energy". An important point to remember is that chemistry is a science, which means its procedures are systematic and reproducible and its hypotheses are tested using the scientific method. Chemists, scientists who study chemistry, examine the properties and composition of matter and the interactions between substances. Chemistry is closely related to physics and to biology. Chemistry and physics both are physical sciences. In fact, some texts define chemistry and physics exactly the same way. As is true for … Continue reading

As some of our most beloved faculty and staff retired this summer, YSU STEM wants to take the time to acknowledge those who have been exceptional. This is the second part of this two-part series, where we highlight two of our faculty as they continue on to the next chapter of their lives. This summer, professor of physical chemistry Howard Mettee retired after 47 years of service to the YSU community. I came in the fall of 1968, one year after the private Youngstown University became Youngstown State University, Dr. Mettee said. I came because there was a move at the same time to start a graduate Masters Program. For scientists like chemists, this meant educating students not only in the facts and theories of chemistry, but now conducting publishable experiments with student participation, and attempting to contribute to the growing knowledge bank of a vital science. After being on staff for about two years, faculty size doubled, with the added faculty all being required to have a Ph.D. For existing faculty, the opportunity was there for them to hone their research skills. This meant that as the newest addition to the State of Ohios network of 11 research universities, … Continue reading

The Changing States of Solids, Liquids, and Gases When a substance goes from one state of matter solid, liquid, or gas to another state of matter, the process is a change of state. Some rather interesting things occur during this process. [more] Chemistry is a branch of science that studies the composition and properties of matter and the changes it undergoes. Chemistry is far more than a collection of facts and a body of knowledge. Its all about [more] Most chemists operate in two worlds of work. One is the macroscopic world that you see, feel, and touch. Chemists also operate in the microscopic world that you cant directly see, feel, or touch. [more] Chemists can classify matter as solid, liquid, or gas. But there are other ways to classify matter, as well such as pure substances and mixtures. Classification is one of the basic processes in science [more] Scientists are often called on to make measurements of matter, which may include such things as mass (weight), volume, and temperature. A worldwide measurement system has been adopted to ensure that scientists [more] When chemists study chemical substances, they examine two types of properties: chemical properties and physical properties. Chemistry is defined as the science of matter, different from physics, in terms of matter's chemical structure, reactivity, properties and reactions or transformations. It is the science of matter, its structure, chemical reactivity and properties, and the transformations it undergoes. It is often called "the central science" because it is concerned with the fundamental energy or forces that hold matter together studied in physics and the molecular systems and characteristics of the complex organisms studied in biology (see physics, biology). Because of the diversity of matter (which has the atom as the fundamental particle), chemists are often engaged in the pursuit of studying how atoms interact to form molecules, and how molecules interact with each other. Consequently, chemistry includes the study of microscopic phenomena, such as clusters of atoms and their characteristics on the nanometre scale, and macroscopic phenomena, such as the interaction of proteins and DNA in complex solutions and the properties of new materials This category has the following 70 subcategories, out of 70 total. Xavier University – Department of Chemistry

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2015

Chemistry is the science dealing with the composition and structure of substances and the transformations of these substances into new substances. The chemist attempts to identify naturally occurring compounds and also prepares and analyzes new materials which may form the basis of products useful to mankind. Xavier's chemistry majors, upon graduation, are equipped with knowledge of basic chemical principles and experience in careful observation, controlled experimentation and thoughtful analysis of scientific data. The department is very cognizant of the need to provide its students with the training necessary for advanced study in chemistry, for a career in chemical industry, or for one of the professional fields. The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in chemistry degree enables students to enter into a master's or doctoral program or immediate industrial employment requiring an extensive background in chemistry. This program is approved by the American Chemical Society, enabling students to graduate as certified chemistry majors. The graduate who has completed the B.S. in chemistry will possess the necessary background for medical or dental school if the one-year course in General Biology has also been taken. Four Cool Classes: 1 General Chemistry A pre-professional course approved by the American Chemical Society for chemistry majors and … Continue reading
