Philosophy of Chemistry (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

Posted: Published on December 29th, 2014

Our contemporary understanding of chemical substances is elemental and atomic: All substances are composed of atoms of elements such as hydrogen and oxygen. These atoms are the building blocks of the microstructures of compounds and hence are the fundamental units of chemical analysis. However, the reality of chemical atoms was controversial until the beginning of the 20th century and the phrase fundamental building blocks has always been ambiguous. So even today, the claim that all substances are composed of elements does not give us sufficient guidance about the ontological status of elements and how the elements are to be individuated. In this section, we will begin with the issue of elements. Historically, chemists have offered two answers to the question What is it for something to be an element? These two theses describe elements in different ways. In the first, elements are explicitly identified by a procedure. Elements are simply the ingredients in a mixture that can be separated no further. The second conception is more theoretical, positing elements as constituents of composite bodies. In the pre-modern Aristotelian system, the end of analysis thesis was the favored option. Aristotle believed that elements were the building blocks of chemical substances, only … Continue reading

Commentary: Seahawks Chemistry Driving Team Success

Posted: Published on December 29th, 2014

We start with another chemistry lesson. Because, in all honesty, thats what this Seahawks season has been all about with the two Rams games serving as the perfect benchmarks. I stood here the night of October 18th after a Seahawks loss in St. Louis, and, to the dismay of skeptics, said the Seahawks were still a good team playing average football. The Hawks were 3-and-3 and everyone was still digesting the unconscionable move of trading Percy Harvin. Ten weeks later, on the heels of a second straight divisional title, we can say that the Hawks ARE a good team playing exceptional football. It also begs the question of whether Harvin mightve been one of those combustible elements, threatening the chemistry the Hawks were seeking. Who knows whether the Seahawks wouldve won 9 of their last 10 games with Harvin. But its an impressive sample set that once again proves that the collective whole is greater than an individual talent. Theres no taking away that Harvin helped the Hawks win their first Super Bowl in franchise history once they got there but theres also a satisfaction that theyve positioned themselves to do it again, and might be even better, without his … Continue reading

Their undeniable chemistry made them the hottest love team in the Philippines and GMA Network's Primetime King and Queen. But Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera have a very real love story that is full of surprises and unexpected twists and turns that brought them to where they are now-- the country's most celebrated couple set to tie the knot in the most awaited wedding of the year. Dingdong Dantes began his showbiz career as a commercial model at the very young age of 2. At age 17, Dingdong appeared in a movie for the first time in the "Shake, Rattle and Roll V" episode Anino, and starred in GMA Network's youth-oriented series T.G.I.S. (Thank God It's Sabado) under the name Raphael Dantes. Dingdong also appeared in Honey My Love So Sweet and I'm Sorry My Love, as well as in television programs such as "Anna Karenina" and "F.L.A.M.E.S." He continued to star in films and telenovelas like "Encantadia", "Twin Hearts", and "Moments of Love". Dingdong also hosted shows such as GMA's reality artista search … Continue reading
