University Chemistry Labs Told to Improve Safety
Posted: Published on August 7th, 2014
After serious accidents, a U.S. National Research Council Report urges accountability all the way up to college presidents Safety goggles in lab. Credit:AlbertHerring via Wikimedia Commons Amajor new report on safety in academic chemical researchis calling on US universities to adopt a culture of safety actively supported at all levels, from university presidents and chancellors to student researchers. The report, issued by the US National Research Council (NRC) in response torecent serious accidents in some university research laboratoriesindicates that previous approaches to reduce laboratory accidents, which usually involve introducing new regulations, have not been successful enough. Beyond compliance While acknowledging that there is always room for better adherence to regulations, the authors say the goal of the new report is to move chemical research beyond simple compliance to the adoption of a culture of safety in academic laboratories that transcends inspections, standard operating procedures, and chemical safety plans. It goes on to say that a true safety culture represents a commitment to achieving safety even in the absence of specific rules or regulations. The reports authors analyzed methodologies of safety culture from the industrial sector, including non-laboratory settings such as the airline industry, healthcare, and manufacturing. They list a total … Continue reading

Ryan Tannehill, Mike Wallace struggle with chemistry
Posted: Published on August 7th, 2014
Mastering a new offense is never as easy as it sounds and is almost always accompanied by massive potholes in the road. Such is the life Ryan Tannehill leads during the Miami Dolphins' training camp. Learning his first truly new offense since switching to quarterback in college, Tannehill has been on a rollercoaster ride to start camp under coordinator Bill Lazor. Recently Tannehill has thrown a slew of interceptions in practice as he and his targets get comfortable with the scheme. "It's a combination of a bunch of stuff," Tannehill said, per The Miami Herald. "Some throws we're just trying to make in practice to see if it's something we want to move with on during the season. We have other answers on the plays, but the coaching staff wants to take a look at some throws against some different coverages and see if we can complete them.'' The coaching staff doesn't like the picks but isn't worried about the third-year quarterback working through the trials. "There were too many interceptions," coach Joe Philbin said. "However, I thought we responded well later in the practice and kind of worked through it." One issue that that has hindered Tannehill's immediate growth … Continue reading

CARBONDALE -- A doctoral student at SIU is among group a scholars invited to attend a program for tomorrows scientific leaders. Sambasiva Reddy Bheemireddy, who is pursuing a doctorate in chemistry, is taking part in the SciFinder Future Leaders in Chemistry program from Aug. 5-14. The program, sponsored by Chemical Abstract Service, is billed as one of the most prestigious of its kind. Sambasiva will join a group of just 18 other international scientists who are gaining an opportunity to share research experience and knowledge. Sambasiva earned his bachelors degree in chemistry from Kakatiya University, India, in 2006 and his masters degree in organic chemistry from Osmania University, India, in 2008. He worked at Thomson Reuters in 2009 and the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology as a full-time research scholar as part of a research fellowship program from 2009-2012 before joining the doctoral program at SIU. At SIU, Sambasiva works in the laboratory of Kyle Plunkett, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry. Sambasiva studies the design and synthesis of small molecule and polymeric materials based on cyclopenta-fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that have relevance for organic electronic devices. As part of the program, he will attend events in Columbus, Ohio and … Continue reading

The West Australian Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton. Picture: MCT FILM And So It Goes (M) 3 stars Michael Douglas, Diane Keaton DIRECTOR ROB REINER REVIEW MARK NAGLAZAS Late-life romance is given a tasteful if not especially lively treatment by Rob Reiner in his return to the genre he reinvigorated with When Harry Met Sally . . ., the 1989 classic that repackaged the milieu and mood of Annie Hall for mainstream consumption. However, it is not Reiner who is the key here but screenwriter Mark Andrus, who earned a much- deserved Oscar nomination for As Good As It Gets (1997), which yanked off the blanket of smugness that had settled on the romantic comedy genre in the wake of When Harry Met Sally, letting in the chilly wind of reality. Andrus attempts to recapture the magic of As Good As It Gets by giving us another grumpy curmudgeon, this time a widowed Connecticut real estate agent named Oren Little played by Michael Douglas who wants to sell his magnificent home and use the money to retire. So while Oren is showing his place, he has moved into one of a set of cute apartments he owns, an edge-of-a-lake bohemian … Continue reading
