Go with the gut: Our symbiotic relationship with our intestinal bacteria

Posted: Published on February 17th, 2015

By Andi Horvath Chemistry researcher Assoc Prof Spencer Williams talks about the rapidly emerging understanding of human microbiota - the diverse and numerous microorganisms that reside on and within our bodies - and particularly how the composition of our gut flora can determine the state of our own health. ANDI HORVATH I'm Dr Andi Horvath, thanks for joining us. Today we bring you up close, to your own microbes. There are literally trillions of microbes that live in and on our body. They include bacteria, fungi like yeasts, parasites and viruses. They outnumber our human cells 10 to one and their genes outnumber our genes one hundred fold. But humans are not just a walking talking host for a complex system of microorganisms it's in fact a critical symbiosis, we can't exist without them and they need for us for survival as well. Microbes perform functions that our cells can't do. Like digest certain carbohydrates, but the community of microbes, known as the microbiome provide metabolites that actually affect our human genes and they regulate things like our digestive processes, our hormonal and immune systems and even our brains. You've probably heard of the Human Genome Project, the map of … Continue reading

DUBLIN, Feb .16, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/8hncv4/flow_chemistry) has announced the addition of the "Flow Chemistry Market for Pharmaceutical, Chemical, Academic & Industrial Research, Petrochemical and Other End-user Industries - Global Industry Analysis, " report to their offering. The chemical segment has been dominating the demand for flow chemistry over the past few years. In terms of revenue, the segment accounted for over 35% of the global flow chemistry market in 2013. Rising demand for flow chemistry in complex chemical reactions coupled with the need to adopt green manufacturing technologies is projected to drive demand for flow chemistry in this segment. Pharmaceutical is anticipated to be the second-largest end-user of flow chemistry during the forecast period. Increasing demand for flow chemistry by manufacturers of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) is estimated to boost the flow chemistry market. Flow chemistry is also expected to enhance the E-factor in the manufacture of APIs. Pharmaceutical is likely to be the most lucrative end-user segment in the flow chemistry market. Academic & industrial research is also projected to be one of the major outlets for flow chemistry in the next few years. Flow chemistry has the ability to enhance the purity and refining properties … Continue reading

Dalhousie chemist awarded top Canadian science prize

Posted: Published on February 17th, 2015

For Axel Becke, a professor of chemistry at Dalhousie University, the turning point that would vault his career into the scientific stratosphere did not come in a campus laboratory but during a three-hour lunch on the French Riviera. It was 1991 and Dr. Becke was sitting across the table from John Pople, a U.S.-based theoretical chemist and future Nobel Prize winner who was one of the titans of the field. They were there for a conference and Dr. Becke had seized the moment to explain his approach to density functional theory DFT a mathematical method that could vastly improve the accuracy of chemical calculations. By the end of the lunch, Dr. Pople was convinced. A year later, he and his team at Carnegie-Mellon University incorporated Dr. Beckes ideas into a computer program that would become the most widely used chemistry software package in the world. That was the breakthrough, Dr. Becke said. Thats when DFT really took off. Now Dr. Beckes contributions, widely appreciated in computational chemistry but unknown to most Canadians, are being recognized with the awarding Tuesday of Canadas most prestigious science prize, the Herzberg Gold Medal, along with $1-million in funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering … Continue reading

Members of Sceptical Chymists, clockwise from left: President Ida DiMucci, Ryan Corbett, Rowan Meador and Josh Rubinstein create some Coca-Cola caviar at the Science Center at Gettysburg College on Feb. 12. (Clare Becker The Evening Sun) Junior Josh Rubinstein holds a batch of Coca-Cola caviar that was created before the club meeting on Feb. 12. The recipe includes soda and calcium chloride. (Clare Becker The Evening Sun) The Sceptical Chymists, a group of Gettysburg College chemistry buffs, made Coca-Cola caviar at a recent meeting. How? By combining soda, calcium chloride and a few other ingredients. But it took members a few tries to get it right. "I saw them working out the kinks earlier this week," Gettysburg College Chemistry Department Chair Joe Grzybowski. "There were some failures." The group's name comes from Robert Boyle's book, "Sceptical Chymists," president Ida DiMucci said. Member, usually about 20 to 25 people, meet for chemistry-related events and fun during the academic year. Read the original: Photos: Chemistry buffs concoct Coca-Cola caviar … Continue reading
