Ancient Europeans intolerant to lactose for 5,000 years after they adopted agriculture
Posted: Published on October 21st, 2014
PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 21-Oct-2014 Contact: Dominic Martella dominic.martella@ucd.ie 35-387-295-9118 University College Dublin By analysing DNA extracted from the petrous bones of skulls of ancient Europeans, scientists have identified that these peoples remained intolerant to lactose (natural sugar in the milk of mammals) for 5,000 years after they adopted agricultural practices and 4,000 years after the onset of cheese-making among Central European Neolithic farmers. The findings published online in the scientific journal Nature Communications (21 Oct) also suggest that major technological transitions in Central Europe between the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age were also associated with major changes in the genetics of these populations. For the study, the international team of scientists examined nuclear ancient DNA extracted from thirteen individuals from burials from archaeological sites located in the Great Hungarian Plain, an area known to have been at the crossroads of major cultural transformations that shaped European prehistory. The skeletons sampled date from 5,700 BC (Early Neolithic) to 800 BC (Iron Age). It took several years of experimentation with different bones of varying density and DNA preservation for the scientists to discover that the inner ear region of the petrous bone in the skull, which is the hardest bone and … Continue reading

Jack the Ripper ID undone by DNA error
Posted: Published on October 21st, 2014
By Kate Seamons Newser "The Illustrated Police News" on display during a press preview for the exhibition "Jack the Ripper and the East End" at the Museum in Docklands, London, on May 14, 2008.(AP Photo/Akira Suemori) Last month brought the news that Jack the Ripper had been identified, at least according to an amateur detective who claimed in a new book that DNA evidence from a blood-soaked shawl found near one of the victims pointed to a Polish immigrant named Aaron Kosminski. But Russell Edwards' claim was dogged by issues: The shawl's provenance was shaky, a peer-reviewed journal hadn't published the finding, and the molecular biologist Edwards used to arrive at his conclusion had to make use of mitochondrial, rather than genomic, DNA. Now, a fourth hole: That expert, Jari Louhelainen, made a serious "error in nomenclature," according to a group of DNA experts who pored over the finding at casebook.org. They say these two sentences from Edwards' book are the smoking gun: As the Independent reports, the experts say Louhelainen referenced the wrong mutation from the GMI's mtDNA database; it should be "315.1C" rather than "314.1C." And the issue is that 315.1C isn't rare at all. As one writer … Continue reading
