Ambank Founder Murder Case: DNA In Cigarette Butt Consistent With Accused’s DNA

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2014

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Bernama) -- A witness told the High Court here Thursday that the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in one of the four cigarette butts found at the location where the founder of Arab-Malaysian Banking Group (AmBank), Hussain Ahmad Najadi was killed, was consistent with the DNA of the accused, Koong Swee Kwan. Chemistry Department Crime DNA Unit Head, Dr Seah Lay Hong, 53, told the court that the results were obtained from the test conducted after the accused's blood samples were received on Oct 2, 2013. "On my comparison, Koong's DNA profile matched with one of the exhibits, the cigarette butt, indicating a common origin," she said. When asked by Deputy Public Prosecutor T.Deepa Nair during the examination-in-chief on how Koong's DNA could be found on the cigarette butt, she explained that the cigarette had been smoked, put in the mouth of the smoker (Koong) and saliva had been transferred, posting his DNA on it. Seah was giving evidence at the trial of Koong, 45, a tow-truck operator, who was alleged to have murdered Hussain, 75, at the Kuan Yin Temple car park at No.4 Lorong Ceylon, here at between 1.30pm and 2pm on July 29, 2013. Koong … Continue reading

Researchers pinpoint new role for enzyme in DNA repair, kidney cancer

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2014

Twelve years ago, UNC School of Medicine researcher Brian Strahl, PhD, found that a protein called Set2 plays a role in how yeast genes are expressed -- specifically how DNA gets transcribed into messenger RNA. Now his lab has found that Set2 is also a major player in DNA repair, a complicated and crucial process that can lead to the development of cancer cells if the repair goes wrong. "We found that if Set2 is mutated, DNA repair does not properly occur" said Strahl, professor of biochemistry and biophysics. "One consequence could be that if you have broken DNA, then loss of this enzyme could lead to downstream mutations from inefficient repair. We believe this finding helps explain why the human version of Set2 -- which is called SETD2 -- is frequently mutated in cancer." The finding, published online June 9 in the journal Nature Communications, is the first to show Set2's role in DNA repair and paves the way for further inquiry and targeted approaches to treating cancer patients. In previous studies, including recent genome sequencing of cancer patients, human SETD2 has been implicated in several cancer types, especially in renal cell carcinoma -- the most common kind of … Continue reading

DNA drives wrongful conviction play in North Chicago murder

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2014

By Frank Abderholden fabderholden@stmedianetwork.com | @abderholden June 11, 2014 2:48PM Marvin Williford, 43, of Chicago, who was convicted of murder in 2004 and sentenced to 80 years in prison. storyidforme: 67673943 tmspicid: 24105028 fileheaderid: 11879571 Updated: June 11, 2014 8:51PM New technology for testing DNA is driving a wrongful conviction argument in the case of a brutal North Chicago home invasion that resulted in the death of a man after he was doused with gasoline and lit on fire. Attorney David Owens, who works with the University of Chicago Exoneration Project, is seeking a new trial for Marvin Williford, 43, of Chicago, who was convicted in 2004 and sentenced to 80 years in prison. Williford has maintained his innocence and never confessed. Were still a few steps away, Owens said this week after a hearing in Lake County Circuit Court. Williford has a status hearing scheduled for next week. Owens is arguing that recent DNA testing of a two-by-four used in the attack on Jan. 22, 2000 does not link Williford to the crime. According to prosecutors and Willifords trial, the attack involved three men with guns who went into the home of Delwin Foxworth, 42, in the 1800 block … Continue reading

DNA crackdown

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2014

DNA crackdown NSW Police have started tapping more than 2000 former prisoners on the shoulder, asking them for DNA samples. The move is to help solve past and future crimes but it has come as a surprise to those who have served their time and say they should be left alone. Philip Waters, 60, served time behind bars 14 years ago after being caught with about three kilograms of marijuana. "I got caught with too much in my car I was guilty, I pleaded guilty I didn't harass the court in any way or waste their time, I did it and that was it, he said. He served three months back in the days before authorities routinely collected inmates' DNA. Now, police across NSW have been ordered to make it a priority to collect samples from former prisoners, like Mr Waters, in the hope of solving crime. It's been a real push, executive-wide from the NSW Police Force and it has been filtering down to all the local area commands. They have been tasked and deployed with this as a priority to go out and retrieve these samples. Only those who reappear on police radar are targeted - and only … Continue reading

Mexico Said to Await DNA Result to Confirm El Azul Is Dead

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2014

Mexicos government is waiting for results of DNA tests that would confirm the death of Juan Jose Esparragoza, known as El Azul, the second most-wanted leader of the Sinaloa cartel at large, according to a Mexican official. The death was reported June 8 by RioDoce, a Sinaloa state-based news weekly. The Mexican official, who asked not to be named because the government has yet to confirm the death, said the authorities suspect Esparragoza died of a heart attack. The Interior Ministrys press office said it had no additional comment after Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said June 9 that the government couldnt confirm the death of Esparragoza at that time. Mike Vigil, a retired former head of international operations for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, said Mexican federal security sources told him they contacted family members who confirmed Esparragozas death. Esparragoza was the most-wanted Sinaloa cartel member at large after Ismael El Mayo Zambada, according to a 2009 list distributed by the government of then-President Felipe Calderon. His death, if confirmed, comes three months after the capture of Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, who gained fame after escaping from a high-security prison and building up the Sinaloa cartel, named after his … Continue reading
