Drugs, implants to enhance work raise ethics debate

Posted: Published on November 8th, 2012

Prominent scientists and ethicists in the U.K. are calling for a public debate about the use of future drugs and technology that will allow people to work longer hours as well as concentrate better. A report published Wednesday unveiled the specific concerns of such enhancements, written by experts from the Academy of Medical Sciences, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society and the British Academy. A roundtable of leading minds considered a near future in which so-called smart drugs could be utilized to improve a persons ability to work enhancing attention and memory as well as physical and digital alterations including bionic implants. They could enable us to work in more extreme conditions or into old age, Genevra Richardson, chair of the steering committee that produced Human Enhancement and the Future of Work, told the Guardian newspaper. Richardson said that new technologies in the workplace raise serious ethical, political and economic questions that demand broad consideration [including] what are the consequences of their long-term use in individuals? Robin Lovell-Badge, one of the chairs at the working group, said the immediate challenge concerns cognitive enhancing drugs. Some of these smart drugs already exist. Modafinil, developed to treat the sleeping condition … Continue reading

New drugs to lower cholesterol on the horizon

Posted: Published on November 8th, 2012

By Deborah Kotz, Globe Staff Since hitting the market a quarter-century ago, cholesterol-lowering statin drugs have become one of the most popularly prescribed medications. Giant trials have shown that the medications not only effectively lower bad LDL cholesterol in those with elevated levels but more importantly, lower the risk of having a heart attack or dying from heart disease or a stroke. Where researchers once worried that statins might increase the risk of cancer, theyve now found that statin users have a 15 percent lower risk of dying from cancer as well as other causes. In a study published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, Danish researchers examined medical records of all cancer patients in their country diagnosed between 1995 and 2007 and found that those who took statins had a smaller likelihood of dying over a 2.5 year period than those who didnt. But as potent as statins are to lower high cholesterol and reduce inflammation associated with heart disease and cancer, they dont work for everyone. About 30 to 50 percent of patients with high cholesterol cant get their LDL levels down to a healthful level with statins, according to Dr. Robert Giugliano, a cardiologist at … Continue reading

Drugs worth £85,000 found in home

Posted: Published on November 8th, 2012

7 November 2012 Last updated at 07:19 ET A man who had told police cocaine found in his possession was for personal use, had 85,000 worth of drugs in his house, a court has been told. The High Court in Edinburgh heard the drugs were found at David Anderson's then home in St Johns Avenue, Falkirk. The 25-year-old admitted being concerned in the supply of Ecstasy, cannabis resin and amphetamine, and possessing cocaine. Judge Lord Uist remanded Anderson in custody for sentencing next month. Advocate depute Martin Macari, prosecuting, said Anderson's car was stopped on 17 February as he waited for traffic lights to change. When told that he and the vehicle were to be searched he replied: "I will tell you what I have got." He told the officers where to find the cocaine, an ounce with a street value of 1500. Later, while being questioned, he admitted operating a "safe house" said Mr Macari. During the search police officers found drugs with a total street value of around 85,000. Novartis may have 14 new 'blockbuster' drugs by 2017

Posted: Published on November 8th, 2012

Novartis could produce 14 or more new big-selling 'blockbuster' drugs within five years as it bets on cancer, heart and respiratory treatments to fill the gaps left by expiries on current patents, the Swiss firm said on Thursday. Like many of its rivals, Novartis is facing headwinds as some of its top earners lose patent protection, particularly blood pressure drug Diovan. It is counting on its newest products, such as breast cancer drug Afinitor, to pump up sales. But some analysts caution that recently launched drugs like multiple sclerosis pill Gilenya and eye medicine Lucentis will face growing competition next year as Biogen Idec and Regeneron bring rival products to market. Novartis currently has 139 projects in clinical development including more than 73 new molecular entities spread across a wide area of diseases, it said in a statement published ahead of an investor event in Boston on Thursday. Among its most promising products are serelaxin and LCZ686 to treat patients with heart failure as well as drugs for psoriasis and multiple sclerosis. It plans to file serelaxin for regulatory approval in the U.S. and Europe in early 2013. However, the results of a late-stage study for serelaxin published on Tuesday … Continue reading

Organ on a chip? Scientists test drugs on tiny, artificial lung

Posted: Published on November 8th, 2012

CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. researchers have begun testing drugs using a microchip lined with living cells that replicates many of the features of a human lung, a technology that may one day help improve drug testing and reduce researchers' dependence on animal studies. In 2010, researchers at Harvard's Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering developed the so-called lung-on-a-chip technology that mimics the function of air sacs called alveoli, which transfer oxygen through a thin membrane from the lung to the blood. For drug companies, the technology offers a way to better predict how drugs will work in people, ultimately reducing the cost of drug development by identifying problems before drugs are tested in clinical trials. "Major pharmaceutical companies spend a lot of time and a huge amount of money on cell cultures and animal testing to develop new drugs, but these methods often fail to predict the effects of these agents when they reach humans," Dr. Donald Ingber, whose study was published on Wednesday in Science Translational Medicine, said in a statement. Now the Wyss team is putting its artificial lung to the test, using the device to recreate pulmonary edema, a condition that causes fluid to leak into the … Continue reading
