Company that mixed diluted chemo drugs not in 'grey' area: expert

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2013

TORONTO -- The expert investigating diluted chemotherapy drugs says he personally doesn't feel companies that mix drugs for hospitals fell into a jurisdictional grey area. Dr. Jake Thiessen told an Ontario legislative committee Monday that the service is part of the "customary" evolution of services that professionals provide. He says it's a sense of entrusting to professionals things that professionals know most about, which is common in dentistry and medicine as well. Thiessen says the current system has served people well for many years, but things could slip between the cracks. He says it may be time to solidify the licensing standards, education requirements and experience for these companies. Thiessen says he'll deliver his report to the Ontario government by July 12. Health Minister Deb Matthews has said she'll make it public. Marchese Hospital Solutions prepared the drug-and-saline mixture that was supplied to four hospitals in Ontario and one in New Brunswick. Extra saline in the bags containing cyclophosphamide and gemcitabine effectively watered down the prescribed drug concentrations by up to 20 per cent. Some of the 1,200 cancer patients affected were receiving the diluted drugs for as long as a year. Go here to see the original: Company that … Continue reading

Drugs, weapons drive crime-rate jump

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2013

Drugs, weapons and explosives, coupled with unruly public behaviour have fuelled a spike in Victoria's crime rate. The number of criminal offences has surged 21,347, or 5.6 per cent, to 403,618, in the 12 months to March, according to Victoria Police crime statistics. Crimes involving weapons, explosives and bad behaviour in public places posted the biggest rise, climbing 20.8 per cent. Deputy Commissioner Lucinda Nolan attributed the increase to police stepping up crime detection, mainly with drug offences and unruly public behaviour. Advertisement Drug offences alone rose 2579, or 14.6 per cent, to 20,270. The statistics compared the 12 months to March 2013 with the 12 months to March 2012. Ms Nolan was particularly concerned that family violence still covered the bulk of all crime. 'Total crime is still increasing. This is still a concern to us, especially with family violence-related offences accounting for 38.6 per cent of crime against the person, Ms Nolan said. Crime against the person jumped 7.4 per cent per 100,000 population. This is largely due to an increase in the rate of assaults, which was up 11.9 per cent, Ms Nolan said. But having said that, we take some satisfaction from knowing the rate of … Continue reading

New H7N9 bird flu can resist drugs, study finds

Posted: Published on May 29th, 2013

CDC.gov A CDC Scientist harvests H7N9 virus. Chinese scientists report it's developed resistance to the main drug used to treat it, Tamiflu, in a few patients By Maggie Fox, Senior Writer, NBC News The new H7N9 bird flu strain that has killed 36 people in China has developed resistance to antiviral drugs, Chinese researchers said Tuesday. The mutation has developed especially quickly, and scientists said they were concerned, although influenza viruses usually do evolve into forms that can resist the effects of antiviral drugs. "The apparent ease with which antiviral resistance emerges in A/H7N9 viruses is concerning; it needs to be closely monitored and considered in future pandemic response plans," Dr. Zhenghong Yuang of the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center and colleagues wrote in a paper published online by The Lancet medical journal on Tuesday. Tamiflu is a pill in a class of drugs called neuraminidase inhibitors. They currently offer the only known treatment option for bird flu. GlaxoSmithKline's inhaled medicine Relenza is the the same class of drugs. None of the drugs cures the infection. But if given withing a day or two of symptoms starting, they can make the illness less severe and perhaps cut a day or … Continue reading
