Drugs, migraines, death

A coronial inquest is investigating whether a mix of prescription drugs and marijuana caused the death of a Perth woman. Linda Mulvaney, 54, regularly smoked marijuana and took her husband's painkillers on top of her own medication to help suppress the agony she experienced from prolonged migraines and lower back and shoulder pain, the inquest was told. They said 'we don't have bed space for people with headaches. She died on June 17, 2008, from multi-organ failure which may have been caused by respiratory depression from sedating drugs. The inquest also is examining whether her husband's delay in seeking medical help two days after she fell into a semi-coma contributed to her death. Advertisement Mrs Mulvaney had long experienced migraines as a result of a childhood car accident. Later in life, their duration increased from two to three days to weeks. She would usually sleep through much of the episode, only waking to drink water and smoke cigarettes, her husband Tony Mulvaney told the inquest. In the two years leading up to her death, she increasingly suffered hallucinations and would do "silly things" such as going outside naked and asking the neighbours to cook Mr Mulvaney's dinner. Mr Mulvaney said … Continue reading

Research and Markets: Global Breast Cancer Drugs Market 2011-2015: The Global Breast Cancer Drugs Market to Grow at a …
Posted: Published on August 13th, 2012
DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/rs7g34/global_breast_canc) has announced the addition of the "Global Breast Cancer Drugs Market 2011-2015" report to their offering. One of the key factors contributing to this market growth is the increasing prevalence of breast cancer worldwide. The Global Breast Cancer Drugs market has also been witnessing the trend of the emergence of combination therapies to treat breast cancer effectively. However, the availability of alternative treatment methods could pose a challenge to the growth of this market. Key vendors dominating this market space include AstraZeneca plc, Novartis, Roche Pharmaceuticals, and Sanofi S.A. Other vendors mentioned in the report: Eli Lilly and Co. and GlaxoSmithKline plc. Commenting on the report, an analyst from TechNavio's Healthcare team said; The current trend witnessed by the Global Breast Cancer Drugs market is combination therapy being used to treat breast cancer. Many oncologists believe that chemotherapy drugs are most effective when given in combination with radiation therapy and surgery. Cancer cells that are confined locally can be easily treated by surgery or radiation therapy, while cancer cells that have spread to distant sites in the body can be killed by chemotherapy. Therefore, combination therapy helps in completely removing the tumor or destroying … Continue reading

Research and Markets: Global Hyperphosphatemia Drugs Market 2011-2015
Posted: Published on August 13th, 2012
DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/wdfpps/global_hyperphosph) has announced the addition of the "Global Hyperphosphatemia Drugs Market 2011-2015" report to their offering. TechNavio launched its report Global Hyperphosphatemia Drugs Market 2011-2015 based on an in-depth study covering the Americas, and the EMEA and APAC regions. The report aims to aid decision makers' understanding of the present and future landscape of the market. Commenting on the report, an analyst from TechNavio's Healthcare team said; The Global Hyperphosphatemia Drugs market provides enough growth opportunity for vendors because of the increasing demand for phosphate binders in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hyperphosphatemia treatments. Since iron-based phosphate binders have better phosphate-binding capacity, vendors in the market are investing heavily in R&D to develop iron-based phosphate binders for the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in end-stage renal disease patients. According to the report, there is an increase in the prevalence of CKD across the world, and CKD is one of the main causes of hyperphosphatemia. Thus, the increasing prevalence of kidney diseases will drive the Global Hyperphosphatemia Drugs market. Further, the report also discusses that the biggest challenge that the Global Hyperphosphatemia Drugs market is facing is the side effects caused by currently used phosphate binders. The study … Continue reading

Russell Brand made drugs documentary to help addicts
Posted: Published on August 13th, 2012
Russell Brand felt compelled to open up about his drugs battle for a new UK documentary in a bid to inspire addicts to embark on "abstinence-based recovery". The British funnyman fought substance abuse and alcohol addiction for many years, but turned his back on drugs in 2002. He looks back on his health battle in new show Russell Brand: From Addiction to Recovery, and he admits the 2011 death of his friend Amy Winehouse prompted him to film the programme - but he also wanted to highlight how addicts can address their issues by abstaining from drugs rather than using treatments such as methadone. Speaking on BBC's Newsnight show on Friday, he says, "Perhaps that (Winehouse's death) was a catalyst in my decision to make the documentary but primarily it was because I wanted more people to be aware of the possibility of abstinence-based recovery, which I believe to be the true solution to the problem and disease of alcoholism and addiction. "It's having a program and a method to deal with a life free from drugs." Brand has also called on officials in the UK to overhaul the laws on drug use in the country. He adds, "I think … Continue reading

IOC official: Jamaican sprinters should expect more drugs tests
Posted: Published on August 13th, 2012
LONDON (Reuters) - Jamaican athletes, who have dominated the sprint events at the London Olympics should now expect more visits by drugs testers, former anti-doping chief Dick Pound said on Saturday. Usain Bolt stormed to victory in both the 100 and 200 meters with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce snatching gold in the women's 100 as the Caribbean island consolidated its domination of the blue riband events. "No, they are one of the groups that are hard to test, it is (hard) to get in and find them and so forth," former World Anti-Doping Agency chief Pound told Reuters Television when asked whether he was happy with the way Jamaica tested its athletes. "I think they can expect, with the extraordinary results that they have had, that they will be on everybody's radar," said Pound, an International Olympic Committee member. Jamaica won a clean sweep in the men's 200 with Yohan Blake and Warren Weir winning silver and bronze behind Bolt. Blake was also second to Bolt in the 100 and the duo also combined with Nesta Carter and Michael Frater to retain the 4x100 relay title in a world record time. It was Bolt's third gold for the second successive Games. Veronica … Continue reading

Drugs use widespread in schools
Posted: Published on August 11th, 2012
Drugs in Schools statistics. Source: The Sunday Mail (Qld) A SNIFFER dog runs its nose over a row of school lockers, trained to stop in its tracks when it detects a whiff of marijuana, ecstasy, amphetamines or other drugs. The scene is not a crime-riddled US district but here in Queensland where illicit substances have become a major issue for educators. "It's unbelievable how rife it is in schools. People would be horrified," says Martin Dominick from the K9 Centre, who quietly takes drug detection dogs into Queensland schools about twice a year. Drugs in schools came dramatically into focus when one of the state's most exclusive schools last week announced "regular and random" drug tests on students. The Southport School headmaster Greg Wain feared a public backlash but has been inundated with support from people who say it's time to address doped-up kids in classrooms. At Southport, the issue was so significant the school discussed bringing in sniffer dogs before choosing instead to drug-test students and expel anyone caught twice, Mr Wain confirmed to The Sunday Mail. "I was hesitant about random drug testing because of the fact we have a great deal of trust here between the staff … Continue reading

A Combo of Existing Drugs Could Treat Cocaine Addiction
Posted: Published on August 10th, 2012
Two drugs currently used to treat heroin and prescription painkiller addiction may work together to fight cocaine as well without causing dependence themselves, according to a new study in rats. A clinical trial in humans is currently enrolling patients, and if future research is successful, the new drug combination buprenorphine plus naltrexone could be the first medication developed for the treatment of cocaine addiction. The drug would likely work for methamphetamine and other stimulant addictions, too. The new research originated with Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, who asked George Koob of the Scripps Institute in California to lead the study. I had been intrigued by the clinical trials showing that when you use buprenorphine, use of cocaine goes down significantly, says Volkow, referring to previous studies of people with heroin addiction who reduced their use of cocaine while being treated with buprenorphine. But buprenorphine (Suboxone, Subutex) is an opioid, which means that it can cause physical dependence and has the potential for misuse. So, for people who use cocaine but arent already addicted to heroin or a similar drug, buprenorphine could make their problem worse. The last thing addiction treatment providers want to do … Continue reading

Guns, drugs seized in Anaheim sweep targeting gang
Posted: Published on August 10th, 2012
A yearlong investigation into one of Anaheim oldest street gangs has resulted in the arrests of 49 people and the seizure of dozens of firearms and 11 pounds of crystal meth, authorities announced Friday. The investigation, dubbed Operation Halo, involved more than 250 law enforcement officers who fanned out across Orange County and part of Los Angeles in the sweep, officials said. The probe was aimed at Eastside Anaheim, a gang that police said is deeply rooted in the city. Of the 49 people arrested, authorities said, 11 were identified at career criminals and documented gang members. Anaheim Police Chief John Welter said at a news conference that members of Eastside Anaheim have successfully manipulated the community by persuading residents to mistrust the police and gang-intervention officers. "If criminals realize residents are afraid of us, they exploit that," he said. The arrests come after a series of street protests and general unrestin Anaheim that grew out of community anger over the fatal police shootings of two Latino men in Anaheim. Both the crime rate and the number of officer-involved shootings have increased markedly this year in Orange County's largest city. Welter would neither confirm nor deny that one of the … Continue reading

Etsy blocks sales of drugs
Posted: Published on August 10th, 2012
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Etsy has become the go-to spot for homemade jewelry, knickknacks and household goods. But apparently, some have been using the online marketplace to sell everything from drugs to human remains. Now Etsy is cracking down. The online marketplace recently revised its policies, excluding from its list of sellable items such products as tobacco, hazardous materials and body parts (hair and teeth are still OK). "Though odd as it may sound, we've spent long hours over the past several months extensively researching some offbeat and fascinating topics, from issues surrounding the sale of human bones to the corrosive and toxic properties of mercury," the company wrote on its official blog on Wednesday. Etsy says the changes are made in order to comply with legal rules and restrictions. "But beyond that, when it comes right down to it, some things just aren't in the spirit of Etsy," the online company wrote. "While we understand that it is possible for certain items to be carefully and legally bought and sold, Etsy is just not the right venue for them." Related story: Etsy's secret? The "Cult of Me" The new policy prohibits the sale of human body parts, including but … Continue reading
