More drugs get tick for taxpayer subsidy

Posted: Published on June 23rd, 2012

ELEVEN new drugs that treat a range of diseases from cystic fibrosis to infertility will receive taxpayer subsidies, cutting the price of medicines for 45,000 patients. Among them is Bronchitol, a drug discovered and trialled in Australia. The portable inhaler hydrates and helps to expel mucous - reducing the odds of bacterial infection on the lungs, which is a constant affliction of many people with cystic fibrosis. It would otherwise cost patients up to $7247 a year, but now, like all 11 of the approved drugs, the price will be capped at $5.80 per script for concession card holders and $35.40 for other patients. Advertisement: Story continues below Health Minister Tanya Plibersek lauded the decision to subsidise the drugs under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. ''This will ensure more patients have greater access to the medicines and treatment they need at subsidised prices,'' she said. The listing of Bronchitol, also known as Mannitol, is expected to give up to 325 young people relief from the symptoms of the chronic genetic illness - prolonged hacking coughing fits, infections and reduced lung capacity. Sian Ellett, 23, a masters student in creative writing at Melbourne University, said the drug had a profound impact in … Continue reading

Parents Planted Drugs on Volunteer: Cops

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2012

Parents who are dissatisfied with some aspect of their child's education often consider setting up a meeting with the child's teacher or make a phone call to the school. But Kent and Jill Easter, both 38 lawyers and parents of an elementary school student in Irvine, Calif., opted to take matters into their own hands, police claim. The couple were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly planting drugs in the car of a volunteer at their child's school, according to the Irvine Police Department because they thought the parent volunteer "was not properly supervising" their son, said Lt. Julia Engen. "It is an absolute, over-the-top, irrational response to what would ordinarily be a minor dispute," Engen said. "It's inexplicable." Kent Easter drove to the home of the school volunteer, whom police are calling "Jane Doe," early on the morning of Feb. 16, 2011, and placed a bag of marijuana, Percocet and Vicodin on the driver's seat of her unlocked car, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office. Later that afternoon, he allegedly called the Irvine Police Department's non-emergency number and, using a false name and phone number, told the dispatcher that he had seen Jane Doe driving erratically and that … Continue reading

Drugs rife in Riverland

Posted: Published on June 21st, 2012

THE Riverland and northern suburbs are havens for illegal drug users and dealers, figures show. The latest Office of Crime Statistics and Research figures show these council areas have recorded a steady increase in drug offences over the past six years and a surge in drug dealing offences between 2009-10. In Berri and Barmera District Council, the number of detected illegal drug sales skyrocketed from four in 2009 to 145 offences in 12 months. Police reported 186 drug-related offences in the area during that time. In Port Adelaide and Enfield Council, illegal drug sales leapt from 74 to 138 among 522 drug-related offences reported in the area during 2009-10. Playford Council, which takes in about 70,000 residents in the far northern suburbs, recorded 90 illegal drug-selling offences during 2009-10, up from 48 the year before, among 421 drug-related offences. Several other council areas recorded jumps of more than 50 per cent in the selling or the trading of illegal drugs since 2006. Police Assistant Commissioner Grant Stevens said increased drug detections came from strong policing. The OCSAR data tracks all crimes known to police from 2006 to 2010. The SA Police 2010-11 annual report also showed drug crime jumped 10.6 … Continue reading

Officials recommend targeting retailers of synthetic drugs

Posted: Published on June 21st, 2012

EVANSVILLE Taking a more aggressive approach against retailers selling synthetic drugs might be the best way for the state to tackle the growing problems posed by the dangerous drugs, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said Tuesday. Zoeller and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan convened a summit of law enforcement officials, prosecutors and legislators from both states in Evansville to exchange ideas about combating what they said is the rising threat from small-batch methamphetamine making and the use of synthetic drugs. A growing number of teenagers and young adults are using synthetic drugs, which are substances laced with chemicals designed to mimic the effects of marijuana, cocaine and meth but which often have serious health effects. Buyers don't know what chemicals and amounts of them are in the products. Because they were for sale out on the countertop, kids thought they were safe. These are nothing to mess around with, Madigan said. They are horribly dangerous. They account for numerous suicides and deaths across the country. The drugs are packaged with catchy names and in ways that allude to them being smoked and inhaled even though the packages typically say they aren't intended for human consumption. They are often sold at … Continue reading
