IVF drugs linked to childhood cancer
Posted: Published on April 25th, 2012
The study looked at 764 French children diagnosed with acute leukaemia and 1,681 children who had not. Researchers asked their mothers for details of fertility problems and if they had sought fertility treatment, including whether the women had been treated with specific methods including IVF, artificial insemination or ovarian stimulation drugs. Dr Jremi Rudant, of the Centre for Research in Epidemiology and Population Health, INSERM, Villejuif, France, who led the research, said: "Previous studies have suggested a link between infertility treatments and acute childhood leukaemia, but there havent been many studies, most of them have been small, and they focused either on IVF or hormonal treatment. "Our study was much larger and its the first time that a specific increased risk linked to fertility drugs has been found." He accepted the study did not prove that fertility drugs caused cases of childhood leukaemia: "More research is now needed to investigate more closely the link between specific types of fertility drugs and what role the underlying causes of infertility may play in the potential development of childhood leukaemia." The study also found that children of parents who struggled to conceive naturally - taking at least a year to do so - … Continue reading

Stroke Risk High When Anti-Clotting Drugs Stopped
Posted: Published on April 25th, 2012
Study Highlights: DALLAS, April 25, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Some patients with irregular heartbeats who are taken off anti-clotting medication face a high risk of stroke or blood clotting within a month, according to new research presented at the American Heart Association's Emerging Science Series webinar. Patients with certain types of atrial fibrillation, or irregular heartbeat, take these drugs to reduce the risks of clots that could lead to a stroke. Sometimes they are instructed to stop taking the medication temporarily before surgery or permanently because of side effects. "No matter what drug they are on, patients who need anticoagulation revert back to their intrinsic risk of stroke and embolism after discontinuation, so it shouldn't be done lightly," said Manesh Patel, M.D., lead author and assistant professor of medicine at the Duke University School of Medicine. "Unfortunately, it's unclear how to provide optimal anti-coagulation coverage during periods of transition." Researchers analyzed data from a clinical trial known as ROCKET AF, finding the risk is similar whether patients are taking the drug warfarin or the newer anticoagulant rivaroxaban. Rivaroxaban is taken once daily and doesn't require the frequent monitoring of warfarin, which requires frequent dose-adjustment. In ROCKET AF, rivaroxaban was found … Continue reading

Fertility drugs more than double childhood cancer risk, scientists say
Posted: Published on April 25th, 2012
Children born to women who took fertility drugs are more than twice as likely to develop leukemia, French scientists announced Tuesday. Researchers from the Center for Research in Epidemiology and Population Health (INSERM), based in a southern suburb of Paris, linked the use of ovarian-stimulating drugs to a 2.6-fold increase in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common type. The risk of developing the rarer acute myeloid leukemia was increased 2.3-fold by the drugs, according to research presented at the Childhood Cancer 2012 conference in London. Children whose mothers struggled to conceive for more than a year were 50 percent more likely to develop ALL, the study found. The research, which looked at the mothers of 764 French children diagnosed with acute leukemia and 1,681 without the disease, did not find an increased risk with in vitro fertilization (IVF) or artificial insemination. Study leader Dr. Jeremie Rudant said, "It has always been hypothesized that assisted reproductive technologies may be involved in the onset of childhood cancer as they involve repeated treatment at the time of conception and/or manipulation of the sperm and egg. And it is now established that a majority of acute leukemia have a prenatal origin." He added, … Continue reading

Drugs, money seized in four-day crackdown on I-85
Posted: Published on April 21st, 2012
ANDERSON The smell of bagged marijuana was inescapable in the air of a conference room at the Hilton Garden Inn on Friday, a day known as a "holiday" for pot smokers. Several law enforcement officers walked in and out of the room, which had a buffet line and another 14-foot table covered with a collection of drugs, including 15 pounds of pot sealed in various ways, a quarter-kilogram of cocaine, and methamphetamine and prescription pills. The officers, troopers, deputies and dispatchers were there to celebrate a four-day operation that had been set up to catch drug traffickers and other offenders. "As everybody knows, April 20, 4/20, is a known drug holiday," said Anderson County sheriff's Sgt. Jamie Crawford, who led the operation. "That's why this operation was called Operation 420, to try to interrupt that tradition, I guess you could call it." The origins of "420" are not known but the slang for marijuana dates back to the 1960s, gaining traction in the Grateful Dead tour circuit and seeing wider use in recent years, according to the Associated Press. Tens of thousands of marijuana users and advocates participate in events public and private on April 20, including about 10,000 people … Continue reading

Hoy wants BOA drugs ban to remain
Posted: Published on April 21st, 2012
Sir Chris Hoy says the fight to keep sport clean could take a backwards step if the lifetime Olympic ban imposed on British drugs cheats is overturned. British Olympic chiefs expect to lose their legal battle with the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) over the ban. And that would allow the likes of sprinter Dwain Chambers, banned for two years in 2004, to compete in London. "It will be sad if we have to fall in line with the rest of the world," said four-time Olympic champion Hoy. Speaking at an event to promote national schools sports week, he added: "I don't see anything wrong with having more stringent rules. I think it should be the rest of the world that's falling in line with our rules. The advice from experts and lawyers was the by-law went too far and would be interpreted by Cas as an additional sanction over and above what the Wada code says. A lot of people have been saying for a long time that the BOA is going to lose, and perhaps the penny is beginning to drop. The BOA were out on a limb with this, but the bigger point was they felt they should … Continue reading

If there's an upside to your mother dying at home from cancer, it's that there is a stack of heavy-duty narcotics left lying around the house once she goes. So says, rather bitterly, an old mate who lost his beautiful mum last year and has been working his way through the piles of left-over ketamine and OxyNorm the palliative care nurses used to keep her pain at bay. He jokingly invited me over the other week to share a ''heroin lollipop'', his name for the ''compressed fentanyl lozenges'' with ''integral oromucosal applicator'' (aka a stick) his mum sucked on between her shots of morphine. Advertisement: Story continues below When I demurred, he tried to sway me with an offer of snorting OxyNorm - aka ''hillbilly heroin'' - a fast-onset opioid he calls his closest experience to ''returning to the womb''. I again declined (friends, eh?), which didn't stop him Googling government websites to check doses and contra-indications with my asthma medication, you know, in case I changed my mind. As he listed the research-verified side effects of the drug, it struck me this would be useful information to make available to the most vulnerable segment of recreational drug users - … Continue reading

New illegal drugs available in runup to Games
Posted: Published on April 21st, 2012
LONDON (Reuters) - During an informative and entertaining address to an anti-doping conference last month, German researcher Mario Thevis referred to "80, 90, 100" new performance-enhancing drugs for which no tests yet exist. "They act like EPO (erythropietin) but they are structurally different and that means the current EPO tests will not pick them up," he told delegates to the conference in London convened by worldsportslawreport. Thevis added that "according to anecdotal evidence and rumors" the drugs, which replicate EPO's blood-boosting qualities, were already used in elite sports. EPO stimulates the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. This increases the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood, allowing muscles to perform for longer. News that up to 100 new drugs could be available in the runup to this year's London Olympics will astonish only the naive. "It doesn't surprise me," responded World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) director-general David Howman. "We are in the area where we are into third and fourth generations and they continue to climb. Whether they are detectable or not depends on the ability of the individual laboratory." One in two competitors will be tested during the London Games, including all medalists, and the estimated 400 daily tests … Continue reading
