Can some patients' bodies become 'addicted' to topical steroids?

Posted: Published on November 5th, 2014

(Akron Beacon Journal / Tribune News Service) Emily Bennett's 9-year-old son's history of eczema began when he was 6 or 7 months old. At first, the pediatrician recommended over-the-counter hydrocortizone creams. When that didn't help, he was prescribed a topical corticosteroid cream, but his eczema continued to worsen. Over the years, with visits to several specialists, he was prescribed more topical steroid creams of different potencies for different parts of his body a very mild one for his eyelids, a somewhat stronger type for the tops of his ears, another for face and neck only, a total of seven different types. Bennett and her husband, who live in Erie, carefully followed the rules for application of the creams, as well as other therapies. Their son was tested for allergies he is allergic to peanuts and has asthma and the family has tried special diets and given him probiotics. In February, when he had a big "flare," as a resurgence of eczema is called, his mother says she noticed something different. "This isn't eczema anymore," she said to herself. Her son's skin was red in a way it hadn't been before. As she did research and talked with other parents, she … Continue reading

My Eczema Care Routine March 2014 | … …

My Eczema Care Routine March2014 Woohoo I have finally updated my routine! Hope this helps! Shower/ Wake up Routine 1) First thing in the morning I like to shower. If my skin is all flaky and dry as well I find that the only way I can really get rid of the flakes/ clean it properly is to shower. As youve probably read all over the internet already, long and hot showers can dry out the skin especially for us eczema sufferers and I do find this to be the case. It feels so nice to have a long, hot shower I know but when I step out of the shower I find that I am so dry and irritated that the long, hot shower is definitely not worth it! So I keep my showers short and the water lukewarm. I know some people find it hard to give long, hot showers up especially in the winter, but I find that eventually you have to put your skin first! It is worth it! Please note, I avoid water contact with my face and neck (which are prone to eczema) as I wash these after my shower. Products used in the … Continue reading

They say that steroids didnt work for them or that theyre no good for the skin. However, every treatment comes with a risk. Even natural eczema trecaratments have risks too. When used properly, steroids are safe to use with eczema. But if not used with precaution, prepare to deal with the risks that others have been warning about. There are two types of steroids used to treat eczema. Theres topical applications like ointments and creams, and then there are injectable steroids. Topical steroids can be bought over the counter or can be prescribed by a doctor. Injectable steroids are always prescribed however. The good thing about using steroids as excema curesis that they are pretty convenient options, especially over-the-counter (OTC) preparations. You dont need to see a doctor to get hold of them. You just need to visit the nearest drugstore and look for a steroid cream or ointment sold … Continue reading

Accident prone eczema patients

Posted: Published on October 30th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 29-Oct-2014 Contact: Erin White ewhite@northwestern.edu 847-491-4888 Northwestern University @northwesternu CHICAGO --- Intense itching and dry, irritable skin aren't the only problems adults with eczema face. They are at greater risk of accidental bone fractures and other injuries, a new Northwestern Medicine study has found. This is the first study to find adult eczema is a risk factor for fractures and other injuries. The increased odds of accidental injury could be directly related to the side effects of steroids and sedating antihistamines commonly prescribed to treat the skin disorder or the under-treatment of severe cases, study authors suggest. "Many eczema patients who are prescribed medication for itch are often given sedating antihistamines or steroids, but those medications may come at a price," said Jonathan I. Silverberg, M.D., senior author of the study. "Sedatives cause fatigue, and steroids can lead to bone density problems and osteoporosis." Silverberg is an assistant professor of dermatology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and an attending physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The study, published Oct. 29 in the journal JAMA Dermatology, validates what Silverberg sees regularly at the Northwestern Multidisciplinary Eczema Center. "Last month three of my patients with eczema cancelled at … Continue reading

Eczema Tied to Bone Fracture Risk in Study

Posted: Published on October 30th, 2014

Risk was small; distractions caused by itch and sleep problems are possible factors, experts say WebMD News from HealthDay By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter THURSDAY, Oct. 30, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- The skin condition eczema may increase slightly the risk of broken bones and injured joints, a new study reports. In a study of 34,500 adults, researchers found that among 7 percent of people who had an eczema flare-up in the past year, 1.5 percent had a bone or joint injury and 0.6 percent had an injury that caused a limitation of function. Compared to people without eczema, those with the skin condition had more than double the risk of having had a fracture or bone or joint injury, according to the study. "Adults with eczema have higher rates of injuries, including fractures and bone and joint injuries," said lead researcher Dr. Jonathan Silverberg, an assistant professor of dermatology at Northwestern University in Chicago. Although this study found an association between eczema and bone and joint injuries, it wasn't designed to prove whether eczema is somehow a direct cause of those injuries. Another expert said follow-up research is necessary. "Further studies would be needed to show if there's a direct … Continue reading
