Vitamin D Might Help Kids With Eczema

Posted: Published on October 21st, 2014

FRIDAY, Oct. 17, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Daily vitamin D supplements might help children with eczema that gets worse in the winter, a new study suggests. When eczema, a chronic inflammatory skin disorder, flares up in the winter it's known as winter-related atopic dermatitis. Researchers found vitamin D significantly reduced the uncomfortable symptoms associated with this disorder. "While we don't know the exact proportion of patients with atopic dermatitis whose symptoms worsen in the winter, the problem is common," said study leader Dr. Carlos Camargo, of Massachusetts General Hospital's department of emergency medicine. "In this large group of patients, who probably had low levels of vitamin D, taking daily vitamin D supplements -- which are inexpensive, safe and widely available -- proved to be quite helpful," he said in a hospital news release. A common treatment for severe atopic dermatitis is the controlled use of ultraviolet light, which stimulates production of vitamin D in the skin, the study's authors said. In conducting their research, they explored the possibility that vitamin D deficiency -- the so-called sunshine vitamin -- could help explain why the condition often gets worse during winter. The study, conducted with the help of scientists at the Health … Continue reading

Topical BioMedics Announces "Soothe the Skin They're in," a New Program for Children Who Suffer with Eczema

Posted: Published on October 21st, 2014

Rhinebeck, NY (PRWEB) October 20, 2014 Topical BioMedics, Inc., announces its new program to help relieve the discomfort and pain of children who suffer with eczema by sending their parents a free tube of their proprietary topical product, Topricin Junior for Children. Formulated especially for a child's sensitive kin, Topricin Junior is a natural way to help the body heal the skin as it helps relieve itching, redness, pain, and discomfort. The statistics are staggering. According to the National Eczema Association, there are 31.6 million people in the United States who suffer with eczemaand many of them are children. Eczema is the most common skin problem treated by pediatric dermatologists. About 65% of their young patients develop symptoms before age one, and about 90% of them before age five. Adolescents and adults can also develop this condition, and individuals who had eczema as a child may experience reoccurrences later in life. A non-contagious inflammatory skin condition, the term eczema is derived from Greek, meaning "to boil out." The name is appropriate since to ancient medical practitioners the skin may have appeared to be "boiling." Eczema can appear anywhere on the body or in just a few areas. Common symptoms include … Continue reading

Sanofi, Regeneron Begin Phase 3 Study For Eczema Drug Dupilumab

Posted: Published on October 20th, 2014

By RTT News, October 20, 2014, 02:16:00 AM EDT (RTTNews.com) - Sanofi (SNY, SAN) and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. ( REGN ) Monday announced the start of the phase 3 trial for dupilumab on patients with atopic dermatitis or eczema. Primary objective of Liberty Ad Chronos, first trial of the phase 3 study, is to demonstrate the efficacy of the drug in adults with moderate to severe AD, when administered concomitantly with topical corticosteroids through 16 weeks, the companies said. The trial will have around 700 patients. Secondary objective is to gauge the safety and efficacy of dupilumab up to 52 weeks. "This Phase 3 program will evaluate if blocking IL-4 and IL-13, two key cytokines in the Th2 inflammatory pathway, may provide a potential new approach for this chronic, difficult-to-manage disease," said Donald Leung, a member of the Liberty Ad Clinical Trials Steering Committee. Dyson launches humidifier to combat eczema and psoriasis

Posted: Published on October 20th, 2014

British technology company Dyson, best known for its bagless vacuum cleaners and bladeless fans, has launched its first humidifier, which the company claims can help to combat chapped lips, blocked sinuses and dehydrated skin. On average we breathe 22,000 times a day and spend 90 per cent of our time inside. But breathing dry household air can exacerbate breathing problems for allergy sufferers and can also increase the bodys susceptibility to viruses. In the winter the air gets dryer, potentially resulting in chapped lips, blocked sinuses, eczema, psoriasis, thyroid disorders and acne. Dry air can also exacerbate snoring and leaves nasal hairs brittle leaving people susceptible to cold and flu. In some parts of the world, like Japan, many people sleep with their humidifiers on during the night to maintain healthy skin and help to protect against the health problems associated with under humidified air. However, despite their possible health benefits, existing humidifiers can be unhygienic, according to Dyson, because they can harbour nasty bacteria which they then circulate around the home when the machines are turned on. The Dyson humidifier uses ultraviolet light to kill 99.9 per cent of bacteria in water before it is blown around the room. … Continue reading
