B.C. judge OKs class-action lawsuit over erectile dysfunction link to drug for baldness, prostate issues

Posted: Published on April 3rd, 2013

VANCOUVER - Men who suffered ongoing erectile dysfunction after taking prescription drugs to treat prostate problems and male pattern baldness will be able to pursue a class-action lawsuit against the drug maker, a B.C. judge has ruled. The lawsuit was brought by Michael Miller against Merck Frosst Canada, makers of Propecia and Proscar, two drugs that contain the medication finasteride. Miller was 25 in 2008, when he said he obtained a prescription for Proscar from his doctor, according to a written court ruling. Although that drug is for the treatment of prostate problems, it contains the same medication as Propecia, used to treat male pattern baldness. Miller said he was advised to cut the five milligram tablet into four, making it roughly the same as the more expensive one-milligram Propecia tablets. "Approximately one month after using Proscar the plaintiff alleges he experienced a diminished sex drive," said the March 28 written decision by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Robert Punnett posted Tuesday on the court website. "Over the ensuing months, he became completely disinterested in sexual activity and was unable to maintain an erection." Miller came across a website where other men linked sexual dysfunction to the drugs months after they … Continue reading

Men with severe gum disease have more than double the chance of suffering from the condition In people with gum disease, bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream, causing arteries to narrow Narrow arteries mean erectile dysfunction is more likely By Emma Innes PUBLISHED: 09:42 EST, 27 March 2013 | UPDATED: 09:43 EST, 27 March 2013 Severe gum disease could cause erectile dysfunction, experts are warning Men who suffer from bleeding gums could be more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction, experts are warning. A study has found that men with severe gum disease have more than double the chance of suffering from the condition. The research, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, explained that when people suffer from gum disease, bacteria from their mouth can enter their blood. Once in the bloodstream, the bacteria can affect the blood vessels and arteries, causing them to harden and narrow - as they do with heart disease. This effect upon the blood vessels increases the risk of erectile dysfunction. Indeed, more and more research is showing that erectile dysfunction is an early warning sign of heart disease. Erectile dysfunction doctor to face court

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

A doctor accused of putting profits before the medical treatment of patients at the Advanced Medical Institute is due to appear in court on Tuesday morning as part of the competition watchdog's case against the erectile dysfunction treatment company. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission alleges Brian Lonergan aided and abetted AMI's unconscionable conduct and unfair contract terms. Documents filed in the Federal Court reveal AMI's nasal sprays and capsules, gels and injections contained combinations of anti-depressants, anaesthetics, erectile dysfunction treatments and anti-nausea medicine. The capsules only contained metoclopramide, used to treat nausea, and clomipramine, an anti-depressant that is trademarked as Anafranil. Advertisement Most patients were initially recommended a nasal spray made up of the same ingredients plus pain killer tramadol, dopamine stimulant apomorphine and hypertension medicine phentolamine. Dr Lonergan was a prescribing doctor at AMI and the ACCC alleges he forced vulnerable patients into unfair contracts. Dr Lonergan ''did not seek to diagnose any underlying causes for the presenting problem'', only recommended AMI treatments, and did not ''seek to diagnose whether it would have been medically appropriate to refer the patient to a specialist'', an amended statement of claim filed by the ACCC said. Medicine was prescribed after a … Continue reading

Erectile dysfunction : A problem with a solution

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2013

If youre a man, and youre reading this article, chances are youve experienced erectile dysfunction. One out of two men over age 40 have had difficulty attaining and maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse, doctors say. And while the numbers are smaller, even some younger men may have difficulty developing an erection. However, more than at any other time in history, erectile dysfunction is a problem with a solution, doctors note. Medications and external and internal treatments have improved dramatically, allowing thousands of men to return to healthy sexual functioning. Likewise the stigma has decreased with public awareness. Over the past 20 years, increased media attention, scores of television ads for medications like Viagra and Cialis and starring roles in movies and television shows have moved erectile dysfunction out of the shadows and onto the list of common health concerns. If men have become aware of their treatment options, theyre aware its not just them, said Dr. Lawrence Hakim, chairman of the department of urology and head of the Section of Sexual Dysfunction at Cleveland Clinic Florida. Hakim cautions men to see a doctor. Erectile dysfunction is caused by a lack of adequate blood flow, he said, which can … Continue reading

Also W. Gifford-Jones M.D. says BPH can have a negative impact on a patient's quality of life. Men with BPH often suffer from sexual dysfunction, insomnia and decreased ability to carry out daily tasks. And if BPH is associated with obesity and hypertension, they are more likely to complain of severe lower urinary tract symptoms, says the Reduced urinary flow a reality for older men, article of January 25, 2013. Most men with erectile dysfunction remain untreated, say US scientists

Posted: Published on March 19th, 2013

Public release date: 19-Mar-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Ivanka Moerkerken i.moerkerken@uroweb.org 31-026-389-0680 European Association of Urology Milan, 19 March 2013 - Despite the high erectile dysfunction (ED) prevalence most patients receive no treatment, according to a new US study, presented at the 28th Annual EAU Congress. Undertreatment of ED continues to be common, even though the treatments have a proven efficacy and quality of life impact. "Until now, research conducted on the treatment of erectile dysfunction has been derived from surveys involving small populations," wrote the authors. "However, a comprehensive and larger patient-based study using claims data that characterises men undergoing treatment for ED remains to be performed. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of use of medical therapies, associated co-morbidites of ED in a large population of men." During a 12-month period ending June 2011, patients were identified and included in a payor data-set if they received a diagnosis code for ED. Patients were considered "treated" if they filled a prescription for a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE5i), injection or urethral prostaglandins or androgen replacement (ART). "Untreated" patients received the diagnosis but did not fill a prescription. The therapies prescribed were monitored … Continue reading
