The Mysterious Genetics of the Four-Leaf Clover

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2015

So you lost your job and your lifes a mess. Youre fat, youre broke, youre bad at sex. Youre looking at your dog, hoping she doesnt die next. You need to get lucky. And whats the best way to get lucky? No, its not finding a four-leafed clover on St. Patricks Day. That kind of luck doesnt exist. No, what you need to do is go impress a bunch of drunk strangers with your knowledge of four-leaf clover genetics! Like every other trait on every other living thing, a clovers lucky fourth leaf sprouts from DNA. But the clover genome is surprisingly complicated, and finding the genes responsibleand under what conditionsfor the four-leaf mutation is a still-unsolved biological puzzle. There are over 300 different species of clover, but the type most associated with the rare fourth lucky leaf is the widespread white clover (so named because of the fluffy, delicious-looking white blossoms). Its like having a cat with an extra claw. We know it has a genetic basis, and a mutation that happens at a slow but regular frequency, says Wayne Parrott, who studies crop genetics at the University of Georgia. His lab has come closest to finding the genetic … Continue reading

Genetics: No evidence of role in racial mortality gap

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2015

There is still no evidence of genetic difference between blacks and whites to account for the health disparities in cardiovascular disease (CVD), according to a new study by McGill University researchers. Published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the researchers suggest that after a decade of genetic studies, factors such as lifestyle, education and socio-economics -- not genetics -- are more promising avenues to understanding racial health disparities. The researchers focused on cardiovascular disease, the largest contributor to the racial mortality gap, and conducted a systematic review for articles published over a seven year period in which genetic data from African and European populations were available. The team found no explanation for racial disease disparities amongst any of the hundreds of genetic variants reported. "After nearly a decade of genome-wide association studies (GWAS), no assessment had yet been made of their contribution toward an explanation of the most prominent racial health disparities observed at the population level," says Jay Kaufman, of the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics & Occupational Health in the Faculty of Medicine. Kaufman and colleagues assessed the reported associations from published genomic studies, "The fact that our results show so little stable evidence of genetic explanations for racial … Continue reading

Merino genetics challenge kicks off

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2015

YOUNG gun shearers took to the board to shear 750 wethers in Australia's largest commercial evaluation of Merino genetics - the Peter Westblade Memorial Merino Challenge (PWMCC). The PWMCC which runs from 2014 to 2016 kicked off with 50 teams of 30 wethers last year. Once all wethers were together they were separated into two sections, with one half being lotfed with their meat measured, while the remaining 15 from each team were used for wool evaluations. The average age of the wethers when they entered the challenge was seven-months-old, they were all shorn upon entry and last week were shorn again with 11 months wool growth. First shearing was conducted over a two-day period at the TAFE Riverina's Primary Industries Centre at Wagga last week. Challenge convener, Craig Wilson, Wagga, said the challenge evaluated both commercial carcase and wool attributes of randomly sampled wethers lambs from across Australia. Preliminary results show Jerilderie's Ross and Irene Wells' Willandra Merino stud, NSW, genetics as a standout with two of their clients claiming the two top places on the board. Wedderburn growers, Ian and Julie Gould, "Wattle Grange", Victoria, finished with the best figures for their team of wethers that had a … Continue reading
